Yes, the majority of us cannot afford one. But this video in general gets me excited about LPs. What an awesome showcase video. Very well produced. And of course Nathaniel is monster player with one
I really hope the whole "burst" thing sort of falls by the wayside in the near future. Tonight, out of curiosity, I just listened to little excerpts from a bunch of the classic recordings that we all know featured bursts. Mike Bloomfield on the Super Sessions record, The Beano album, the first couple of ZZ Top records, some Free songs, some Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac, etc. They all sounded so different. There is no "burst" sound, and most of the great rock records we all adore were recorded with guitars that WERE NOT sunburst Les Pauls. We're all victims of guitar influencers, and Gibson's brilliant marketing strategies.
thats such a good way to put it. Thats so true, the fact they all sounded SO different, two different humbucker gutiars probably will sound just as different as two les pauls
It’s about the look, the burst thing it’s about the sound but also the look, it’s one of the best looking guitars ever made if not the best, so there’s a lot of value behind the story of the instrument. Like it or not these are facts.
@@SqualoDeiCelestini I have to agree to an extent, but I actually think that can do a disservice to the player’s expression. Like I said, guitar influencers and Gibson’s marketing department have convinced us to associate “the look” with a particular sound and style, and that the burst is “the most magical and mystical electric guitar in existence,” no less. The reality is that the Les Paul is so much more versatile than the way it’s currently perceived by lots of players, and that’s what it should be valued for. And if we’re talking about looks, call me crazy, but I’d take a Heritage Custom Core H-150 over one of these any day. I’m one of the weirdos who prefers their pickguard and headstock shapes. Plus, the headstock inlay on the custom core models is a perfect cherry on top aesthetically. It simply looks like it’s better suited for a wider variety of musical styles.
Les Pauls are damn fine looking instruments, and there's no denying that. But I prefer the feel and sound of Fender style guitars. Guitarists today have a huge choice of instruments to choose from. From bespoke to mass produced factory clones. The quality is way higher than when I was a lad. There's no intrinsic right and wrong in any of them. My favourites were made in Japan and Mexico. For sure, USA made instruments are amazing, if you can afford them, but personal expression comes from our brain and fingers, and a rich dentist playing an heirloom vintage Les Paul is never going to sound like Mark Knopfler or Jimmy Page. Though Nathaniel Murphy - who is neither a dentist, nor (I'm guessing) very wealthy - does sound remarkably like many classic Les Paul players.@@Matthewtaylorn
Those flam are just too much and generic . vintages one are more subtle an differents one to another, i prefer when it's not that symetrical / bookmatched .
Not a hater but damn these sound bright. Had '53 and '54 GTs, a '60 Standard and gigged with the Spinal Tap '59 many times. Obviously, P-90s and HBs are different animals, but tho they all screamed I found them all to have a very warm sound. Warm, full, with just enough edge and bite. More if required. In fact, the '60 had the coolest creme pups ever - that were terribly weak. I took it to the Gibson factory (this is early 70s and I lived in Kazoo at the time) and they replaced them with another set, only charged me for the labor. "Experts" have maintained that the switch wasn't possible due to creme pups being extinct. Well, if you ever went inside the Gibson factory back then it looked like Joe's garage. They had all kinds of stuff lying around, in various drawers. Sorry to prattle. These sure are beautiful, tho, I'll give them that.
They look and sound great - but I’ve already swallowed this hook too many times. Going to stick with my “True Historic” Collectors Choice - Nicky. Congrats to whoever buys one - I’m sure it will be an awesome guitar
This is the result of “market research.” Lots of players just heard some guys talk about how PAFs were supposed to sound like “a tele on steroids” implying that they should be very bright, sparkly and articulate. Those are not bad qualities for pickups by any means, but we’ve gone to the extreme here. It’s a bummer. I don’t really recognize these sounds from many great songs and albums, to be honest
20k for an R9 . Go pound a cheese grater and they sound awful . My standard R8s sound way better . Tom Murphy makeup doesn't make these like sound like a real 59
Killer playing, sadly the normal player won't get anywhere near these due to cost and availability. Dentist guitar if ever there was one. But beautiful beyond any doubt.
99% of the sound is good pickups, good electronics & pots, and a great amp turned up. I have a greco MIJ les paul with Montys pickups that is better than any Gibson i have owned. 5k+ for a new guitar that wont go up in value is insane.
Agree. Have had vintage guitars up the wazoo over the years. The best sounding hollowbody was/is my Ibanez AS200 with stock pups. Best solid body, a cheap ESP tele with SD pups. The clincher is a stock '64 Deluxe Reverb. Works for me. Sound is always in the ear of the beholder, of course.
Custom Shop 👍👍💥⚡️🔥 paying Murphy several thousand dollars to scuff up and corrode a brand new’59 burst…. No thank you. I have never enjoyed someone else scuffing up and baptizing my gear . Car , guitar, skateboard, surfboard…. Motorcycle , doesn’t matter. If there’s any road rash etc. I want it to be from me. And I’m certainly not into paying big bucks to have some faux road rash.
Ouch the recordings are really not good. You’d think they’d want 20k to sound at their best. I am sure there are some stunners to play, but this video production does nothing for them. It’s not just a RUclips compression thing as so many channels can make guitars of all price points really sing.
Why do these Custombuckers sound so awful? Did they change them.? So far Gibson Hiring the Brandonwound pickups guy has been a big flop . Waste of Talent . The Custombuckers were great the way they were. Listening to this version is like going for dental work .
Are they reliced? OMG why? If I'm going to pay a fortune for a guitar, I'll have it as new thanks, and spend the rest of my life making it look old.If I win the lottery, I'll have one with a Bigsby, thanks!
Jimmy Page, Duane Allman and many other Artists chose the Gibson Les Paul for a reason. You can tone chase all You want. The tones and textures created by these revered artists can not be replicated by anyone else. The idea is to embark on Your own journey with the instrument of Your choice. So invent Your own techniques and craft your own tone !!
When they do this and charge 20k it bothers me to the point it maybe not buying a Gibson at any price. People out here are hurting, and you guys are trying to sell $300 of parts for 20k

Respect for playing Animal and Slither two of my favorites

Did you buy your Nicky from CME? I sold mine to them a couple years ago
@@josephculver7341 - no bought it new from the Music Zoo. Still really love it. Did you replace it with anything cool?
God lord could those pickups be any harsher or bright.

I wish you would do some skynyrd songs for full band fridays. Also some damn fine pickin once again nate
Wow, they all sound super bright. Don't know if I like that so much.
Glad you chose not to go OTT with gain and let the guitar do its thing. So many YT LP video clips have far too much distortion.
Couldn't hear the drums or bass on Moby Dick. Lovely guitars them ❤️
What amp/pedals did you use? Great tone!
I would like to know too. I think a pedal gotta be involved.
Nice Work Nathaniel! WooF!

More like neural surgeon 🤣
4:13 THE BEST!
🤤🥵🤯

A great amp is the key. A 59 burst through a shitty amp will sound bad. A mediocre guitar through a great soan
Yes, until next year that is. Oh, and one will cost you a kidney.
A kidney and a half. And one of your precious testicles.
You assume my kidneys are that valuable. 😂
And maybe your right arm too😢

Second coming Nathaniel! Unleash it!
You have a great touch bro
Why don’t they put that hardware on every aged Les Paul? That’s the best I’ve ever seen out of Gibson.
Whats going on w international shipping, can these be shipped to canada?
The Page tones sound nothing like Page at all and these guitars don't sound like a real burst of any kind .
Sounds killer
I’d gladly sacrifice a kidney for one!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
We'll call our guy!
@@chicagomusicexchange Careful with those secondhand kidneys; some are heavy relic'ed...
wow...epic!!!
That bend at 1.45 in was a dead note that guitar has a dead spot!
WOW !!!
The best Les Paul is epiphone and hands down..
Turn down the treble and turn up the mids for the love God this sounds awful
A les paul is a singlecut guitar with two humbuckers. A burst is just a les paul, like any other. The rest is marketing bullshit you buy into

"Paradise City" lol🤣
Next year the mahogany will be the right mahogany.. and after that the maple will be the right maple. .. and the year after that …

Still don’t understand the aged thing, why would anyone want Tom to bang up your new guitar…?
I'm with you on this, reliced - ruined more like!
1,712 real ‘58 thru ‘60 bursts. Text book law of supply & demand.
For $20k a piece?! HA! No thanks, I’ll buy a goddamn car instead.
Sorry don't want les paul that's trying to sound like a strat and doing it poorly
The opening sounded terrible to me. Anemic comes to mind.
Are they reliced? OMG why? If I'm going to pay a fortune for a guitar, I'll have it as new thanks, and spend the rest of my life making it look old.If I win the lottery, I'll have one with a Bigsby, thanks!
Absolutely, they must have more money than sense!
Correction...$20,000.00 Les Paul's...still ABSURD
ABSURD...! $2000.00 ...personally I prefer GLOSS FINISH...! I like NATURAL AGING...!
Marketing. It's someone's job to make you think you need to have this guitar.
Another regular new LP sterile, medicore and flat, no magic, no mojo, just good marketing and alot of money.
These are a Brazilian....I don't even know how many zeros are in a Brazilian!
