My mother's hometown (furusato) is Ashio in Tochigi. I first visited in 1965 as a child, but was able to return in Early November of 2023. Both times I rode the Watarase line with it's awesome diesel powered engine. It was very nostalgic. I wish Okaasan could have been there with me on my return trip. Rode from Ashio to Kiryu. What a wonderful ride even if in the pouring rain.

The trains are modernized, but some of the stations are still the same as they were in the past, which must have made you feel nostalgic.
Ashio's forests withered and the river was polluted in the past due to environmental pollution caused by mining, but now the forests are recovering and the river is clear. It is amazing how resilient nature is.
I am sure your okaasan would have been surprised if she had seen it.

Actually when I was in Saint Petersburg I was enjoying ancient trams they had in some areas. Guys were laughing but actually enjoyed sitting in this big metal machine doing 30 kmh at most.
There's something indescribable like dignity about the old trains running slowly and heavily, isn't there?

Nice journey like usual! Other than enjoying the scenery, Japan's autumn is really beautiful, now I want to learn about how the train system works in Japan. At first I thought it is own entirely by JR, then I thought maybe there are one or two big railway companies.... But I think there are even more than that. The train, the logistic behind it, it's truly marvelous!

Actually, this line used to be JR. In many cases, like this line, unprofitable lines are detached and operated by the local government.
Their business situation is difficult. So we have to ride them as much as possible :)
@@transitjourney Oh, I don't think you should, because not all Indonesian understand Sundanese. The language is used by Sunda people that lives primarily in West Java and Banten province. Other people from other provinces use other languages that completely different with Sundanese. That's why if you change it, even the next province people like from Central Java, might won't understand it. If you want to, you can use "wakaka". It's Indonesian young people onomatopoeia for laughing, and it's still sounds like kaa-kaa, right?
