Whenever I get on a tube train now, I always make sure Miranda’s not driving it first
I’d imagine she hasn’t lasted until now as a driver, not with that attitude. She’s probably a manager now! ;-)

Passing red signals isn’t part of a train operators job. On the mainline this driver wouldn’t be allowed back out driving after two signals passed at danger in 2 years. The mainline railway is far more stringent. Her attitude is completely wrong
@@stevesje71 this is why I've always had the opinion women should never be Train Drivers or Bus Drivers, their poor backwards attitude. "it's part of the job to hit a car" or "it's part of the having SPAD's". I mean see where she's coming from I think she means it can happen, but having that thought will stress you out. It's not too hard to adhere to signals, most important part of the job after passenger safety.
Her attitude is absolutely abysmal. She should have been fired.
Miranda’s attitude towards the incident should be enough to keep her off the lines, or at least sent back for remedial training. Her smug and smarmy responses show that she doesn’t take the position seriously, and there was no contrition in anything that she said.
I'm an ex driver for my local train in Venezuela (IFE railway) and this is true...the trains I operated are capable of going well over 150kmph, about a year before I quit my job to start college we had a malfunction of the entire signal system, so we were in manual mode, and I was easily going 100kmph when I noticed another unit WITH PAX IN IT in the distance which was stopped due to technical issues (notice a pattern?), I enabled emergency brakes and full regen, and only had about 30 meters to spare, it was my mistake as I realized too late and should have braked sooner, I documented it and told about it to my supervisors...and they told me and a few other drivers who had a similar issue during that mass signal failure that "admitting you're wrong doesn't make you look weak, but rather the opposite, and that a smug, disrespectful approach will get you nowhere and open you no doors".
I willingly went through a week of retraining just so the memory and the refresh would be burned into my brain to avoid this kind of incident again
That high horse is really high up there, be careful not to fall off. Not to excuse her actions and mistakes, but this comment is as smug as she is.
She doesn't need to go back to training, she just needs to be off the lines as an operator permanently. She should be put to clean the trains instead

True, but worse, it shows she has a personality type that just can’t stand taking responsibility (especially when there’s nothing or nobody around that the blame can be shifted to. That drives them crazy. They feel trapped and that’s when their attitude, like you mentioned, comes to the surface.
Did she say that hitting cars is part of the job as a bus driver?? It's only part of the job if you don't know how to do the job. I'm 21 years a bus driver and the only thing that's ever hit my bus was a low branch whacking my nearside mirror. I'm glad Joe passed her training.

The thing is it's not excessively bad and it does happen (drivers make mistakes everywhere, overruns, spads etc), but she needs to have a "I'm not going to let it happen" approach to it and even though they didn't end in trouble, she should still appreciate going forward that she should observe aspects more and not make it a frequent occurrence. 2 spads in 2 years is certainly a borderline for concern.
Despite that, credit where credit is due, when you make mistakes on the job is it important you are completely honest, aid with the investigation and leave no detailed unturned which from the looks of things she was cooperative and gave all the detail for the investigation (otherwise you wouldn't find yourself very long in the job). Even if you know you're wrong, like having taken a drug, been on alcohol, packing your bag when you shouldn't have been, it is extremely important you tell everything BEFORE the substance and alcohol test at the first possible convenience, it will be alot nicer for you going forward than waiting for a drug test to incriminate you.
Her problem here is a common one. Drivers should always check their signal aspect before they move off, even IF a conductor onboard has given them the start command. This is one of the reasons why DRAs are used.
By that time they had annoyed the you-know-what out of her. Showed her a C-list horror video of a speeding train for no good reason. Her fault wasn't speeding but relying on routine and not being vigilant to the signal. I didn't see anything to correct that, they only tried to make her feel bad about herself. Anyone would've had enough of that after a while.

@@emily1 2 SPADs in 2 years is excessive on the mainline and is a very serious cause for concern. I’ve found that there is a culture difference between mainline and LU where spads are concerned.
Honestly Miranda should never be anywhere near a train with that attitude!
Such a difference in attitudes between the guy who tested Jo, “You’ve taken 5 months to get this job. Look after it.” Compared to Miranda’s attitude where she clearly doesn’t care, she’s disinterested in the SPAD video and her blasé manor at the scene of the SPAD doesn’t give the impression that she’s remorseful or that she has learned from it. Assuming she had this attitude after her first SPAD then it’s easy to see why she’s had a second and no doubt there’s a fair chance of a 3rd in the not too distant future. The solution is to downgrade her to trainee again go through the training again and have her retested. That financial hit will make her care about holding onto her job.
That's what happens when instead of trying to find the best people for the job, you're trying to attract people who aren't interested in the job to begin with. Maybe if TfL didn't make sexism as their core policy for hiring new drivers, their drivers would care more about SPADs.
Agree that she has an attitude issue, but in fairness I think many people would have trouble taking that SPAD video seriously, cheap parody horror film that it was.

And thats why in Japan there has been a number of accidents, most fatally the Amagasaki derailment, due to overworked, overstressed and fearful conductors.

That's what I was thinking when she went to see her boss I kept saying "fire her immediately". Her attitude was disgraceful.

Hopefully Miranda didn’t make it to a full time position. The ‘ mehhhhhhhhhhh it’s only a spad’ I found quite an incredible attitude. Effectively said ‘ I didn’t crash so it doesn’t matter’ ….. sheesh.

The whole system seems worryingly unprofessional. Miranda acts like silly school kid, Jo just wants to earn loads of money. Can you imagine British Airways pilots acting like this? And the tube drivers are taking care of MORE people.

The emphasis should be on her act of running the red light. If you run the red light, you’ll get into a crash had the computer not stepped in. Whether you did it in a busy interchange station or on a straight piece of track shouldn’t matter. It would cause a disruption anyways…
Your comment strangely contradicts itself to be honest. You answered your own question. Read it again. Joe had every right to tell Miranda, that she caused delays to the service because she is responsible for that. She accidentally put the public in potential danger and caused delays.
@@TheUnknown313 Miranda triggered the computer to stop the train which disrupted the line. Had the computer not stepped in and she got into a crash, the line will be blocked and diversions will be needed for service to continue.
So one way or another, she has already caused a disruption, whether is it 10 mins or 10 days, it doesn’t really matter.
If Joe wants to nail Miranda for the disruption, he could’ve just said, “You’re very lucky all you caused is a 10 min disruption and not 10 days of closed line, countless injuries and death and a possible criminal case.”
We only saw snippets of the interactions she had.
It's important to talk about all the consequences, to reinforce *why* she should take care, not just *that* she should take care.

"Usually the signal changes" is like the most common reasons for spads on the light rail Saltsjöbanan (before they got ATC!). Because that one time it didn't change for some reason.
In many places in the United States including the largest transit system in the us, the mta, if you blow a red signal you get a 2 week unpaid vacation
Vancouver, British Columbia has had driverless trains since its beginning in 1986. The Skytrain (as it's called) has been entirely computer-operated.
Victoria line has been automatic since opening in 1967, and driverless trains are only with a driver due to union pressures

Miranda's attitude appears to be "Well my training doesn't matter, because there are safety features to cover any mistake I make". She should be treated as though the consequences of her actions were what they would have been without the safety features.

Rubbish; if a driver is *looking* for a signal, they'll see it, whether it's incandescent or LED.

Dude, I don’t drive trains, but even I know signal is gospel, especially up there there’s only three main signals that you really need to worry about along with the other ones that are equally important but these are paramount

its funny how Joe and Miranda, say the only positive thing is the pay. Most of these "train drivers" they do it only for the money, where I have friends in the UK that are major train nerds but can't get in cause people like Joe and Miranda only see it as making money.

No matter how much you set the rules out, with the best of intentions life happens my friend.
We have no real idea exactly what is going on aboard a particular train at any given time, obviously the rules and the signals are there to be obeyed for the health and safety of all concerned but the thing is that we don't really know the specific set of circumstances on board the train.
As far as we know there might be some exceptional circumstances that might help mitigate why the driver felt it necessary to run the Res light.

Manual operation on the Northern and stock footage of the District with grey doors that isn't marked as vintage.
Around 2005/2006. Possibly before the 7/7 attack.
And a section near the end that is the Bakerloo line (I think), certainly not the Northern line - running alongside mainline tracks.

I don't know what they call that over there in the UK. But over here in the US we call them quota hires. In other words ,not hired because of their high ability to perform.
Mirandas mistake didn't kill anyone, but only because of the safety device. She should have been sacked for her attitude.

There is nothing stopping you from contacting the company you want to work for and asking about it. Some employers appreciate that kind of initiative.
Miranda is a woman who has been shielded by her mother for far too long, her perspective on life is swayed somewhat by this experience, scary prospect to have Miranda at the sharp end with her attitude, she will drag a bad into the cab with her and risk a lot whilst mulling things over.
Most London Underground lines nowadays are automated and computer based signalling. So you cannot pass a signal at danger

No they aren't. It's only the modern trains with newer signalling and the sub surface lines are only partially automated as far as I know.

By American railroad / Subway standards, they seem pretty unprepared. They should generally know all the speed limits before even being able to touch the controls of a train. Idk, this was pretty interesting. Disclaimer: Not trying to say our trains are better, especially with all the freight accident's here lately.
I think the reason that they don’t know all the speed limits is that they change 600 times along the line… I don’t even think someone could remember them all if you gave them a few years.

@@TEMPLE7D If I’m being honest, the only reason she would’ve passed training is if she made a good impression and went along with it. You can tell she doesn’t care about her job. This was back years ago though so training strictness has increased no way you would be able to do this on this date. She probably got fired as if you SPAD 2 times that usually means your off the team or you need re-training. This is only for London though other train companies in the uk will make being a driver harder since the tube kinda needs more drivers since the trains run every 1-3 minutes during peak hours and 3-5 during off peak hours. But since other train companies don’t need to run as often they don’t need as many drivers since they only run around every 1-2 hours though. So they usually make driver training harder.

Trains look nicer than the ones I remember riding in the early 70s. Moved to Melbourne in ‘73 to find much older trains still in service. Those trip systems came into use in Melbourne in the late 70s when I started college and often the arms failed to drop despite a green signal. Drivers must have cursed them black and blue as the trains rarely left a station without being tripped on the first attempt. Must have have been poorly installed.
Bloody hell... What a response from Miranda... I guess she will continue working to keep the rainbow squad satisfied.

In the documentary it says there’s over 1200 on the line, I bet you couldn’t memorise 1200 signals, exactly where to start slowing down for each individual station platform, and lots of different speed limit changes. It’s a difficult job, more so than you’d think
@@TrainsOfDorset Not like the stations change.. few times around and the brake points must be basically the same every day. you dont need to memorise signals, you just stop if its red i would imagine..
@@TrainsOfDorset Actually route learning is exactly that, and yes a driver is still learning when driving the route for a while after starting. The other thing is that signals are in the line of sight or have repeaters, and a stop signal is indicated as a caution on a previous signal if it has more than two aspects. A driver should be very aware of signals that often/always at stop for logistical reasons (points etc.) and equally so, if they are closely following another train and see a series of stop or caution signals.
@@TrainsOfDorset yes it takes some time to memorise these things, but she should be improving on these things. And remember to ALWAYS check the signals at stations before leaving, don't be like Miranda, even if you do see the points change. Signals are there for a reason, and there protocols and procedures for these things.
