- As the March Brexit deadline looms, the Eurotunnel teams at both ends of the channel tunnel are on a mission to keep everything moving: getting dog owners home after Crufts, keeping trucks moving despite strikes at French customs, and making sure the trains keep circulating, no matter what, on the world’s busiest and biggest trainset. We see inside Eurotunnel’s mission control centre, a lair any Bond villain would be proud of. And we meet the appropriately named Tash Speed, one of the company’s newest train drivers, who’s already earned the nickname Two Stop Tash for her daily habit of stopping the train just a little too soon. Meanwhile, the once-every-seven-year fan refurbishments at either end of the tunnel are under way. Airflow through the service tunnel, between the two running tunnels, is essential. Without it no trains will run. We find out why high-pressure air has to keep pumping, and how the giant fans at Sangatte in France and Samphire Hoe in England, get overhauled. And why, on the English side, the workers need a good head for heights. Finally, as Brexit rumbles on and deadlines approach and pass, we find out how the tunnel has prepared for the dreaded No Deal Scenario. Is the tunnel really ready?

I wonder how many shuttle drivers tap their toe on their car accelerator on their way home after a shift ?, I used to drive Buses and after a long week I have been known to pull up into a bus stop in my own car, I felt silly when I realised the people expecting a bus were staring at me in my Mini.

I guess it feels differnt to them; a car is more confined and tight, and you have a lower vantage point. A train is higher, more spacious, and just has a different vibe ig

As a Dane I remember wasting much time on ferries, and also being asked to leave the ferry again, because of a faulty part. I came home at 3 am, having to work Monday at 7!
The new Danish Built Tunnel to Germany, close to the length of The Channel Tunnel, will be for trains and cars to drive for themselves and at the time when arriving!

I was born in England and lived the first twenty six years of my life in Essex. I moved to Australia where I have lived the last fifty years. I emigrated in 1972 before the tunnel was working and have always wondered how things there work. Now thanks to this wonderful site I know how it does. Thank you so much.
I rode train through Chunnel the first year it opened. It was an experience I will never forget. Hard to believe it has been more than 25 years.

My favourite job was at a flight maintenance centre, where it seemed like everybody'd been working between 25 and 35 years there, the wholesome buzz that most coworkers there gave off was beautiful magic 🍸

Such a cool system. Also very cool documentary styling everything to fit the era the train was created.
My dad worked on the tunnel when it was being built, H&S and has told me many fascinating stories. Not just about how it was built but like how a struggling nightclub was allowed a 24/7 license for the many workers doing off shift hours and finishing work in the morning etc and how it saved the business. To how the local dover police bought loads of riot vans etc thinking all the brought in workers would cause drunk and disorderly behaviour on their down time and they never had an issue etc. I wish he would write a book about it, I find it fascinating and he tells them a lot better than I do.
Normally the trains travel at 140 kph, but they can operate at 160 kph. During the London olympics the trains were used at the higher speed. This allows an extra train to travel in the tunnel each way at the same time.
If you are directed in your car to the upper deck, be careful on the apex of the ramp which narrows and you can easily hit the kerb and damage your alloy wheels. The recorded announcements in English were made by John Humphries.

Normally a beeper sounds every 1 to 2 mins depending on speed and you reset the pedal then.
@@krimke881 they have to set them up that way because people always try to bypass them, our equipment have dead mans, can't tell you how many times I've had to replace them because people try to jam them on

I visited London, Paris, Italy in 2006 and went through the channel tunnel on a bus. Very fun experience, I had no idea the tunnel existed before I went through it.
Used CT daily for 15 years commuting ! Absolutely fantastic method of transport even better than the hovercraft !

Those train engineers and those who are passengers are brave. The short tunnels we have in the USA are bad enough. A few minutes at most. You can bet that the world's best engineers and scientists inspected that tunnel before Her Majesty's trip !
I tell you what, I've been through at many times and boy does it cut your journey time down. Those ferries take an hour and three quarters and a lot of hassle boarding leaving your car going upstairs while they try and con money out of you with overpriced food and drinks. The train is brilliant and quick as hell, drive on stay in your car 35 minutes and off again. perfect.

I'm Australian and this video got me emotional, I almost cried a few times. Just made me realize that technology-wise we are still at least a couple of decades behind. I guess it makes sense to have such technological advancements in Europe as you share borders with each other. I can almost imagine the thrill and exhilaration of actually traveling through the tunnel.
Go to Denmark my friend! We will soon also be able to drive below a long stretch of water, both trains and cars, but when ever it is needed, as cars will be able to drive for themselves all the way, round the clock.
I like how Eurotunnel drivers are called Train Captains, like imagine being in the bar 'are you a train driver?' 'No girl, I'm a train CAPTAIN' 'oooohhh' *swoon*
I just noticed, it's the train station seen in Euro Truck Simulator.

At least one person has biked through the service tunnel. It would be awesome if the Tour de France had a time trial stage there one year.
The dead mans pedal sounds the same as on the trams in Brussels. Always wondered what that sound was and brought back memories when I heard it here.
To move things along and running smoothly you would think they'd have replacement units where you would just switch out and repair the other unit. This allows more time to check units out for any possible problematic situations.

I think they do, but they didn't acknowledge it in the edit. The narrator inferred there's a week of work to be done to restore the fan, but they also said it's only shut down for 8 hours. I imagine they put a new one in, then refurb the old one ready for the next change in 7 years?
@Hypohamish Or they run the other fan. I believe it was implied only one fan on each side was on at a time.
She's got the right attitude of being relaxed whilst competant. Ive tried a train sim on my pc, and after a few months, i still cannot get the trains to move lol😂

Brexit was the biggest mistake possible; it complicated things, and increased costs for everyone, for generations to come. Very shortsighted.

They should do like we do in the mining business. Have a spare fan impeller already built up ready to install. That way in the event of a failure, it will be down much less than the way they do it in this vid

I genuinely had no idea that the vehicles were loaded onto a train to make the passage through the Chunnel... I thought that you could drive your car right through. I suppose that this is a safer option though, and prevents idiots from breaking down halfway through and blocking the entire thing, or car accidents, etc... amongst many other possible issues that could occur.

@@thebrowns5337 I don't find it particularly idiotic to think this could be a car tunnel. The longest car tunnel also spans many km without emergency exits (the 24.5 km Lærdal Tunnel), this is 50.5 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, but how long does it take from the motorway to the motorway, because it looks like there is a lot of waiting, shuffeling, waiting, papers, loading and unloading to do.
Great to see some brave women power in this doing different jobs. And as ruskiryan2398 mentioned, one of those women powers, Tash, might tap the gas pedal, I had that kind of thing happen from force of habit from my job tasks too, every minute with an action for her, that's much more than I had to do anything in a shift in various jobs I had.

There are names for the Deadman pedal in other European Railways ÖBB SBB Deutsche Bahn Sifa Network Rail 🇬🇧 DSD. This one uses the French system🇫🇷 called Vacma Learnt this via Train Sim World 2
in German also called "Totmannschalter", so the equal to the English name

In the uk once the driver accepts the ride if the passenger cancel it the passenger still has to pay the full amount even if the car hasn't turned up that way the driver doesn't lose out

That John Keefe guy is interesting. His English (language) accent has little hint of UK accent- he sounds east coast USA to me, though it could just be a very clean British accent. Not what I expected. Meanwhile, his French is pretty good to my ear. Can’t find much info about him online.

He sounded pretty English to my bum American ears.
I would never expect, that such a powerful and special train is operated by such a young, lovely and beatiful woman. That was a big surprise for me, I admit.

Don't look at the listing prices, look at the sold prices. Sure sometimes people pay too much but usually those things don't sell until the price comes WAY down. The old parts really don't sell for that much most of the time.

Why? The train has a headlight, nobody else will be down there, stretching their legs etc. Emergency lights will provide enough illumination if required.
