    Dang dude, very well done video. Very informative and even the camera angles and your presentation is better than 95% of the stuff on here. Wish I could have you build my axle; I know it would be done right!

    I have the same PR 44 with RCVs and I need to replace the axle seals. From what you said, it sounds like I would have to pop the RCVs out of the boot in order to remove them. Is that true? Seems like that might be difficult. I haven't tackled a job like this, so I'm a little skittish. Also, do you think I need the housing spreader to get the carrier out?

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  5 лет назад

      The orange RCV boots will not fit through the steering knuckle. That is why you must pull the axle shaft out and you remove the boot. Once you get the unit bearing removed reinstall the axle not onto the stub shaft and use the nut to slightly pry against in our outward direction. The axle will pull through the boot as it comes out but it’s very tight as the poly boot holds tightly to the CV joint (Birfield).
      Upon reassembly there is a tool supplied by RCV that makes it a little easier as it spaces the boot out slightly and allows the axle to be reinserted. You can do it without the tool but it’s a bit more of a struggle getting the boot to accept the Birfield joint.
      As for the case spreader it’s not necessary for removal but if the axle was assembled to the correct amount of case bearing preload it will be difficult to reassemble unless there is only one shin of the correct size on the outside of each carrier bearing. If there are multiple thin shins it is very difficult to assemble and get back to the proper preload with several thin shins.
      Hope that helps.

    Service manual for the rear dana 44 on my tj says 20 to 40 inch pounds for pinion preload with new bearings. 10 to 20 with used bearings. So the specs for the prorock 44 are different?

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  5 лет назад

      No they’re similar just a little too tight for my liking so I don’t go quite that much on the preload.
      Thanks for watching.

    How often should I change my diff oil? What oil would you recommend? I've only had my jk for about 8 months now and me and my family love it and I want to make sure I'm taking care of it properly. Thank you.

      Keith, congrats on your new Jeep. I’m happy to hear that you are inquiring about proper maintenance as that is key for not only the life and longevity of your car but also to help avoid unnecessary and/or premature failures while you’re out enjoying it with the family.
      The FSM states to inspect the differential fluids @ 24k miles and if using in extreme conditions to replace it at that 24k miles. In my opinion any off-roading or adverse traffic conditions is considered extreme conditions so I would suggest following that 24k mile guideline at the minimum.
      I generally drive my Jeep about 15k miles per year and flat-tow it another 5-7 thousand miles behind our coach so I change mine once a year and generally in the spring before mine and my wife’s traveling begins.
      As for what fluid, any GL-5 80W-90 gear oil is what is recommended. Personally I run a Valvoline Synthetic 75W-140 gear oil in mine.
      Thank you for taking the time to watch and I hope you enjoy my videos.

    Great video Mike , very informative . Do you still belong to the Wasatch Outlaw Wheelers ? I was thinking about going to one of their meetings . We are fairly new to Utah and I don't know anyone to go wheeling with .

      Yes, I’m still a member of the Wasatch Outlaw Wheelers. You should come out to a meeting and see if you would like to join. Pretty good group of people.
      We meet the first Wednesday of every month with the exception of this next meeting which will be on Jan. 8th due to the holiday. We have a trail run each month as well.
