You can still find matches easily enough in Melty during peak hours (which tends to be during the mid-to-late evenings around these parts), so there's still some competition to be had. That said, finding matches during any other timeframe is a fool's errand by this point. It's disappointing to be sure, but we can't take the competition that we do have at the moment for granted when it comes to this franchise either. It's certainly going to become a discord-fighter eventually, though we aren't there just yet.
Yo I'm happy ur excited about the Ultimax port, but we have a pretty active discord community, even prior to the steam announcement. We used Shadow PCs (ironically enough) + Parsec to play, which wasn't perfect but we had like 5K server members. I gotta say, PS3 is terrible with emulation, but the game is very fun and I'm really excited for the port! I play Adachi too (always nice to hear his theme as ur outro) and I hope u have as much fun with him as I do

A fighting game is dead in my opinion when you cannot find match online nor lobbies nor queues. The biggest problem when using discord is that matches will probably be extremely one sided with you getting stomped. However the biggest indicator that a game is dead is when, you are not able to find a single match when you have time or want to play.

There's one game I don't think will ever die, and that's BBTag. Like, I got into it 2 years after it released thinking it would be empty, but the lobbies were still super active. I played that for a while, took a 6 month break, came back. The lobbies were still as full as ever and with new players no less. Now this game that every fgc member hates that is on delay based netcode in the age of rollback that was still alive and kicking after the developers showed absolutely no interest in supporting it gets an update out of fucking nowhere to add rollback to it. It couldn't be killed when it was weak and now it's become stronger than any of us would have ever expected it to be.
Nintendo does not hate Rollback or Crossplay. All the free games (and some paid ones too) have crossplay on switch. Type Lumina and Nick have rollback too. Its just that Arc Sys does not give a shiet about switch. Im still waiting for +R Rollback on switch. And will wait for CF and Bbtag Rollback too

There are plenty of games in which you're not gonna find many people with the in-game matchmaking and where you have to hit up the discords. You'll be surprised by how much activity some of these discords might have too, I could very easily find people to play BBCF with in EU even before the rollback beta and it was really no trouble at all. Now if you're in a region that doesn't have much online presence even on discord then that's unfortunate but at least make the effort to check first if you truly want to play more niche games.

Both ArcSys and SNK are applying rollback to older games on Steam, essentially reinvigorating these games for modern audiences. Why will Capcom not follow suit? Heck, I’m still mad they didn’t give us some kind of Rival Schools rerelease soon after announcing Akira on SFV last year (imagine getting a whole year to absorb all the content from a comprehensive collection, including modes removed from Western releases, then upon her release, catching all the references and callbacks to that series, cuz a large part of SFV’s fanbase weren’t even born the last time a Rival Schools game was affordable). This is not logical.
I know it has problems, particularly for netplay, but you CAN buy 3rd strike on modern consoles. I started playing 3s on Switch. It's on Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection, and 3s is one of 4 games on 30th with netplay, and the netplay is actually rollback too. Mind you, it's basically SFV rollback aka "Can we get some rollback please? We have rollback at home," but it's still a port of 3s available on Xbox, PS4, Switch and PC with rollback netcode.

Even with the heavy price discount on Dec. 13, 2021, it only raised the peak player count. The Twitch directory is dead. GBVS Legendary Edition is a slap in the face of those who bought the original and can't a discount for the downloadable content. There is no rollback netcode, no crossplay, and no plans to implement either one in the future. It's pretty much a "dead" game. Thank you Cygames for destroying a fighting game franchise that had so much potential overseas. They don't care though, their gatcha makes them money hand-over-fist.

If we can get ssd's that are fast enough, we can basically play several games at once on console, and allot of the FGC are still Neanderthals like myself who have not yet evolved to the pc master race. But if it was like this: You start out you boot up Guilty Gear Strive, Street Fighter 5, Mortal Kombat 11, Skullgirls, or whatever anime fighter ArcSys released this week, and whatever indie fighter Steam Jank early access that has very few players or anything where you could be waiting for a match, let's say Terrordrome or Stick Fight or Punch Planet, and you boot em all and just do matches as notifications pop up. Prob only 2 or 3 at a time for really popular games like these but you get what I'm saying. If Xbox can boot you right back in to a game where you left off, then it can hold your place in line, so to speak. Though admittedly it is hard to tune your brain for such a thing. But it would alleviate any need to wait on folks to join matches of less populated fighting games.
