India - Darjeeling Railway 2006. Part 3 - Z Reverses and Spirals

This is a look back at the third part of my second visit to this fascinating narrow gauge line. In 1881, the line was completed from Jalpaiguri and Siliguri junction, on the broad gauge main line, all the way up into the Himalayan foothills to the summer camp of Darjeeling. In its 55 mile length, the line rises from 100 metres above sea level to around 2300 metres above sea level. The 2ft gauge 0-4-0 saddle tanks are surprisingly powerful and make a very distinctive sound as they blast their way up the mountain sides.
In this sequence the climb into the Himalayas is getting harder and the railway has to use several Z Reverses and a Spiral, in order to gain altitude sufficiently fast. We finish this section in Tindharia, which is the major passing point on the railway and also the location of the workshops.

@@emdiesel63 I know but the steam locos are under threat. If they're left for too long they'll be unsafe to fire up and the money may not be there to restore them .... Andy

I am amazed at these people, the infrastructure is very old and seems to need many hands to work the rail. Wish I knew half of what they do to be self sufficient. Great job.

While the series of videos is totally fascinating, it would have added to the charm if the train is shown stopping at stations and picking up passengers.
I try to capture that in many of my videos but this train was a private charter and didn't carry normal passengers. Sorry! ...... Andy
have they replaced this engine with a diesel engine?
Diesels operate most of the regular service trains but the steam locos are still (just) in good order .... Andy

Steam locomotives are bad polluters, but most of what you can see in the smoke are the particulates which fall to the ground rapidly. The real damage is done by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These are given out in just as large a quantity by road vehicles, aircraft, ships and power stations. There are only a tiny number of steam locos left working and they are beautiful and fascinating machines. They are a valuable relic from our industrial past and need to be saved from destruction. The pollution from these few steam locos is TINY compared to the pollution from the billions of road vehicles, aircraft and ships in the world. If you’d like to save our Earth from disaster, please get rid of your car or motor bike, don’t buy anything that has been delivered by air, sea or lorry, switch off your electricity at home, never go on holiday by aircraft or car. Not easy, is it?

@Black Swan Agreed. The sad thing is that the number of animals is increasing exponentially but the number of plants is decreasing as we chop them down. We need to change this ..... Andy
