The year 1979.... I went to study at Mount Hermon School in Darjeeling. I was a student of Class 1 then. To me the whole place was mesmerizingly captivating. Yet, being away from home made me gloomy most of the time. However, the quaint little town impressed me a lot with all its charm. The misty mornings, the sudden downpours, the steaming Tibetan cuisines, the majestic view of the Kanchenjunga...all made a permanent place in my heart. Love you Darjeeling.❤
Rupam - so glad you enjoyed the video and amazing that you recognised your grandpa! Makes it all so worthwhile to upload my films. Wish I had more of India but cine film was so expensive and bulky back then. Thanks for your comments.

Took me back to my childhood. Thank you. I still remember running to the book store inside Darjeeling station just to see the numerous comics kept on display and nagging my mum to buy me one which was difficult considering the economic condition we were in then..😁😁
Tata trucks, Ambassadors, Land Rovers, goods bogies, green hillsides without houses, no overhead wires, no vehicles running alongside the train....the Darjerling I grew up in. The only thing that looks better now is Batasia. What a wonderful vedio!!
Shraddha M Pradhan although I was born in 1987 but still my grandfather, dad-‘ and his folks used to say it was such a awesome place and clean and less traffic hill place such awesome cars and less traffic now it’s all over destruction
Awesome video.. Thanks for uploading it. I am reliving those bygone days. In 1979 I was staying in Darjeeling and my house was close to the railway track and it was fun watching these trains go by.
Awesome video. Took me back 50 years ago and the adventures I and fellow friends had as students trying to outrun the train and at the Z lines that left me in the learch once. Nostalgia at its best. Thanks for the upload.
Glad you enjoyed the video - shame its not like that now. All too geared up for tourists with clean shiny engines and posh rolling stock! Suppose it brings the money in though. Apparently difficult to film now as the train tends to be chased by photographers in BMWs.
As an avid model railroader, this train is on my wish list, both as a model and an adventurs, if ever I am within coo-ee of Darjeeling I'm going for a ride for sure. So much history and all on a teapot.
I visited the Batasia Loop in 1984 and the Gorkha Memorial as well as the garden there was not built yet. Thank you for sharing this video. Feeling nostalgic...
Amazing vintage video indeed that has etched an everlasting memory in my mind! That was the era when this place looked real beautiful. Now will never feel like visiting Darjeeling with its transformation...
I wish I had more film to upload but unfortunately that's all I have. Cine film was very expensive back then (4 minutes for about $50 in todays money!)
Man, Old Darjiling was calm. New Darjeeling is way too busy! The British high ranked officers came here for a summer vacation for chilling off. Even today people do but that level of relaxation is gone now.
Oh Wow... Suuper delighted to watch your vdo, Sir Paul. The famous Toy train and Darjeeling during more than 4 decades ago. I was in my lower schooling days, perhaps. Hats off !!! ... God Bless
I had been in this loop in year 1987 it was in similar state still then except for a solitary view point structure very near the bridge and the Hut shown in clip wasn't there. No tickets to reach there and it all depended on your luck that you could capture a train in you photos. Ofcourse there was a makeshift kuccha volleyball court where locals played where at present war memorial stands.
No constructions and buildings aside the highway roads, no massive constructions, no private vehicles. No Competition, no one is Hippocratic. Just simple life, happy life. Only the locals dominate this place and no interference of outside world.
After seeing this video I found out that how we are messing with our town places were so clean time to take up stand, current darjeeling needs to get maintained naturally so we can call it as QUEEN OF HILLS proudly✌

Exactly this land was pure until Bengalis encroached it by their cunningness. That is how we lost everything. Now it is even worse because the dirty politicians have succeeded in not only taking away our ancestral land but they have also succeeded in creating envy amongst our own people so that we may never become united. Otherwise our history culture customs language are untouched even today but the land as well as authority has gone to someone else.
What saddens me is despite technological development, influx of money, increased businesses..... Darjeeling has gotten worse over the years. For a town that relies heavily on tourism, there is absolutely zero development, roads are worse, traffic is worse, garbage everywhere, houses everywhere....Beauty is nowhere..... And we have Subhash Ghising, Bimal Gurung and Aneet Thapa and most importantly Mamata Bannerjee to thank. All that's left is a fond memory of what used to be.

Well we messed up pretty bad and we have gone beyond repair God bless our Darjeeling so much beauty now slowly becoming a dump really very sad
may I know the reason for this, for today's state of Darjeeling ? Why cant it be controlled?
Just wow😯❤
Do you shot any more film on this railway?
Sorry, but no - I have only been to Darjeeling once and that was in 1979. I'd love to go back but it is a long way from the UK!
