As I am from Darjeeling I'm proud to see the World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in this vdo clip . This is one of the beautiful place in India . The Queen of the hills . Thanks for the vdo .
As a young lad growing up in British India, living in Calcutta at the time. I had the privilege to be sent to boarding school GOETHALS MEMORIAL SCHOOL, KURSEONG, 30 km. from Darjeeling. Back in the day, the Toy Train ran regular services from Siliguri to Darjeeling. When we arrived at Siliguri after a 'two-day' journey from Calcutta the students were always excited to board the Toy Train reserved especially for us. We had our own 'Siding' a special STOP at the entrance to our school. As you can imagine the Toy Train full to capacity with very mischievous young boys it was a nightmare for the teachers to keep us under control. 2018, I have just recently visited the school which stands on a hilltop and clearly visible from the train with a large sign painted on a wall GOETHALS MEMORIAL SCHOOL. Misty water-colored memories of the way we were Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time rewritten every line If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me, would we? Could we? THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL VIDEO.
Same here, Haemish. Was in Goethals in the early 70s. Could never get over the thrill of the 'Toy' Train - jumping off, running down the khud, and catching the train again as it came round the bend!
Sir would request you to visit again and take a ride once more . :) even i am looking forward to take a ride on these amazing piece of engineering glad they are still running .
Looks like the tracks needs maintenance ..amazing video and thanks for sharing...glory of Indian railways.Nice to see India retains talented engineers and technicians who make these beauties chug...brilliant British engineer made the Y type rail to avoid harpim bend..he is real genius
Thanks for your comments. The engineers who look after this amazing railway deserve much credit for the incredible job they do to keep the trains running.
As if British brought wealth and invested tegy looted and made luxurious things to enjoy while ppl in India Died bcz if fake famine, Winston Churchill is Nazi from Britain
What a fascinating experience to be able such glorious scenery and such a nostalgic train journey intoIndias past rail history of steam travel Don’t ever lose the charm of these steam trains A life time experience for all generations to enjoy ...
Amazing journey, enchanting view ,well maintained ,good management ,good service to the people & tourists as well, thank u for the video, may God bless you & your country.
I saw this video until last, I know DHR is awesome bt your shots and capturing style is too awesome, actually I am from West Bengal, India and we proud for this....
What a lovely video Peter. Just rode the DHR from NJP to Darjeeling. It was an experience out of some fairy tale book. The Rang Tong station was amazing. It suddenly appears after a curve like magic. Tindharia is where the UP train says "Hi" to the DOWN one. The loops, Z reverse, overlap of the Hill Cart Road, I have never experienced anything like this before, boy Sheldon Cooper would have loved this ride 😊. Each station in this route is mesmerizing. The Mahanadi, Sonada and Tung on the road, the reverse of Kurseong, the Batasia loop guarding the Gorkha memorial in the backdrop of Kunchenzonga, the summit at Ghoom finally resting at Darjeeling and last but not the least, Sukna where the climb starts. Each moment of that journey flashed before me via this video. Thanks so much for this.
THANKS TO THE PEOPLE WHO MAINTAIN THIS. I HAVE ALREADY BOOKED FOR THIS IN MARCH 2020. APPRECIATION TO THE MOST OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO MAINTAIN THIS INCLUDING LADIES IN THE WORKSHOP. SALUTE TO THEM.
Extremely enchanting tour on Himalayan Railway, enjoying sitting at cousy room at your home, yet feeling, you are travelling onboard train- memorable to see this clip.
time seemed to have stood still since steam revolution but still and fond reminder of how the world was once. Only lucky few get to do this journey I guess. Jig jags, bends and cliff edges with vehicles running alongside, a sight to behold.
GREAT BRITISH AND SCOOTISH ENGINEERS AND INDIAN LABOURS . SALUTE TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTTED THEIR SERIVICE FOR THIS DIVINE TRAIN LINE. EVEN I HAVE TRAVELLED IN JACOBITE TRAIN FROM FORT WILLIAMS AND MALLAIGH IN SCOTLAND. BUT THIS IS GREAT AND UNIQUE. I CAN SAY THIS MORE DIVINE THAN ANYTHING. BY.SERGANT VENKATACHALAM.
Mr Peter Sir I am also a lucky viewe r of Narrow Guage Trains in Bangalo re City of India al most at the end of 1060s But viewing these Side by Side Road and Rail mo vement is someth ing like one of the Worlds Wonder
Want to try once at least in a lifetime. In 2015 i visited india and planned to visit darjeeling but unfortunately a landslide happened and blocked the road to darjeeling at that time. Hope covid will end sooner. Greetings from indonesia
Only just discovered your video Peter and seen myself in it in several places. The quality of the photography is wonderful, and the DHR itself is one of the railway wonders of the world. What a trip that was.
I've done that journey. It might have been a interesting to see the view from the train and the places the train passed through, instead of just seeing the train.
How wonderful, truly fantastic filming. How many cameramen did you use to make this great film? Brought many happy thoughts as I travelled this line in 2010. A lot of it at the time was closed due to landslip. Has that all been cleared ? so where does it not start from? THANK YOU for the pleasure you have given me. Richard.
Thanks for the comments, pleased it gave you some pleasure. The filming was all done by myself. It was taken whilst I was on a Darjeeling Tours 'Indian Magic' trip; we had a bus so that tour participants could either travel on the train or photograph/video it from the lineside. I chose the latter so I could film the train from the lineside, after each shot the bus would overtake the train in order to get the next shot, etc. At the time of filming (March 2018) the line had recently reopened throughout from NJP and Darjeeling following landslides in the previous two or three years.
Sir, any idea about the total distance from end to end? Also, in yet another video, I think I have seen three bogies and not two, as can be seen here. Am I right? Thanks
I like the poverty but efficient railroad, straight and well maintained tracks, the train clean and functional certainly another thing when compared to the Myanmar Railways, where the tracks are in poor condition and the diesel locomotive on the plain has to go slower than one. old steamer in the mountains .....
some of the shoves on the switchbacks look difficult. Clearly too much grade but with a run at it, they make it barely. These engineers, know how to get the most out of it. Very nice train handling skills.
Darjeeling hills ooh.. my home. I was in metro (mrt in singapore) going to my room frm my working place watching this video n I enjoyed it a lot cus I cud remember my days there
Hi Peter, it's me again 5 years later @haemishkane5711 commented on your posts. I am sometimes asked what transport I used to get to school back in the day, 1950!! Of course, I am so proud to have had the privilege to have been able to travel to school on the Toy Train. May I have your permission to use a short clip about one minute long, and of course give you credit and the title of your post so that they may see the full epic journey of the Toy Train one of the wonders of the modern world. Thank you.

Impressive videoing which brings back lovely memories of my visit in Nov 2016 with my late brother. It seems the Old Cart Road is devoid of all the traffic which existed in my visit in Nov 2016 which makes it much more pleasant a watch. Compare with our videos at A44488
Lovely video, thank you for the upload. Can anybody tell me why, wherever you go in the World, you see some passengers waving as they go past the camera? I have never been able to understand why
Because of the traverses. The train is backed up a sort of zig zag (traverse) in order to gain height. See my You tube video of this very same train on the first traverse.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad is a world treasure!
That engine is working vary hard. I am amazed it has lasted this long even with good maintenance.

Loudest steam loco in the world?, this thing barks from begin to end, fantastic.
Yes, for a very small loco they were thrashed mercilessly hence the very loud exhaust noise.
I saw this video until last, I know DHR is awesome bt your shots and capturing style is too awesome, actually I am from West Bengal, India and we proud for this....
Thanks for your comments Sanjeeb, pleased you like the video. It is a wonderful railway and long may it continue to run.
It’s nice to see steam trains still working at their original location and job, very nice film

Hi, the line is 55 miles/88 km in length from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. I am not sure about three bogies, sorry I cannot help with that.
That lane changer boarded the train very neaty, it was a great escape
Amazing! Thank you for uploading

I want to know why two men are sitting in front of the engine?
They are dropping sand onto the rails in front of the locomotive to help give the wheels more grip on the severe gradients.
