What, Earthbound was one of my favorite games back in the day. It even came with its own guide book.
I think this is my favorite Story You Never Knew episode.
Probably one of the best insights on Earthbound I've seen in a while and I am a HUGE fan of it. So kudos, you did it justice and shouldn't be cremated by the being that is the internet (probably an alternate form of giygas, definitely has a lack of innocence).

Wow... That honestly brought a tear to my eye. It's like, I think that is honestly why I play video games. Just a return to that kind of Innocence that you're describing. That was honestly very insightful.
I actually got most of my moral code from a pair of games that I played when I was a kid. The first one was Ultima 5, Warriors of Virtue, and the second one was it's prequel, Ultima, Quest of the Avatar. That might sound like a strange thing, but it was the first game I ever encountered with a morals system. It was pretty much based on things like honesty, sacrifice, compassion, and things like that. To this day, I still see it's eight virtues and three principles as being the counter to the seven deadly sins and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
You know, I never finished Ultima 6 and Ultima 7, which were the two last major games in that series that still pertains to that storyline. I kind of want to go back and do that now.

For the title in English I think it means that ness is bound to earth and it's his journey to release that bond of earthly possessions to be one with earth. like the fetus and child references it's you going back to the womb back to the origin of our creation and like the video was saying it's a release of want to go back to a child like view of the world.
I haven't finished listening to the whole video yet, but I felt compelled to clarify something for you: the concept of yin/yang actually isn't representative of light and darkness. More, it's a representation of any duality which can be seen as being codependent upon each other. Darkness needs light to cast it, and light needs darkness to separate it.
Too much order and people will chafe and seek chaos. Too much chaos and people will wander about aimlesslessly in search of order.
Too much fire and everything burns. Too much water and everything drowns.
Too much good and there will never be conflict to allow people to rise up above their station. Too much evil and everyone will be too busy fighting to rise that they never work together as a collective.
I felt a connection to ness and now I understand it

The thing is, your mind is not a possession. Your mind is you. It's a darker side of eastern philosophy, saying that you are disposable. But that is what giving up your mind as poo is saying, that your sense of self ultimately is meaningless. There's a lot that I like about buddhism and eastern philosophy, but their idea of what the self is and isn't I don't agree with. Also, Nirvana is terrifying to me. It's basically a massive infinite mind meld with everyone to ever reach nirvana, your self merging with and becoming indistinguishable from countless others. And I just can't get on board with that.

I played it as an adult and it still made a great impact but I just can't imagine how much more my mind would have been blown back then when I was younger. I remember playing most of the popular snes titles at the time but Earthbound was just so obscurely known back then.

Wonderful commentary on the psychological and Zen experiences of Earthbound. C.G. Jung talks at great length about the individuation processes and how the self is the metaphorical alien world which we must save. This is true for the psychological experience in Earthbound, which like you say are almost like training for enlightenment or mental liberation of the self. I think Itoi had hopes that kids and young people would play the games and get the point like I did growing up. It really sank in. I am one of the lucky folks who played this game as a child and adolescent. I am considering doing my graduate master's thesis on this series and it's relation to individuation, separation of enmeshment, and Zen/ Buddhist concepts as well as self-actualization and I greatly appreciate your work here. Thank you so much! This post is mathematically brilliant! Best wishes and thanks for the wonderful summery of what I had been pondering during my Bachelor in psychology while reexamining the game's story. 😊🙏🌈🌌🍔 So going back to Jung, coming Earthbound would be like saying coming home to the self, we are home, we are Earthbound.

What I heard was that Giygas after his defeat from Ninten he continued to grow his ever lasting power until his own physical body couldn’t contain his own power any longer and he became the incarnation of RAW CHAOS.
With this, I'd love it if you did the entire EarthBound series, especially MOTHER 3. This was an awesome video! :D

I love Mother/Earthbound however I feel since Mother 1 and 3 haven't gotten English versions until recently I feel as if many english fans never got to experience the Mother 1 and 3, which I feel have stronger stories then Mother 2
Japan: Let’s base a game off of the loss of innocence, the concept of self, Yin and Yang and the balance of good and bad. A game with a heartwarming, sad, humorous story filled with charming characters and a plot that all ties together in the end.
‘Murica: Zombies. Apocalypse. Guns. Sequels. Money.
Honestly, that's a very interesting take and gives some new possible meaning to the use of the negative space on Giygas's later forms looking like a baby. Especially in the context of his mind being wrecked from the power and negative emotions he's absorbed and much of the nonsense he speaks during the fight. He's a mess, and seemingly not even fully aware of what's happening, in a way, making him "innocent" and being manipulated by that point. Giygas wasn't able to bring himself to destroy earth the first time because of his childhood memories, so, he gathered power sought to remove those nice feelings and memories, but ended up having the effect leaving him the incomprehensible mess you see at the end. The Giygas fetus theory I don't think it meant to be taken literally with the visuals, more so, a representation of the state he's in with the messy mixed visuals of horror, and subtle implications with the way it's presented. And I think it might actually be intentional that it's the "unstable" form that shows the infant in the negative space, peeling away some of the vale that maybe, this isn't "evil" or that he doesn't WANT TO BE evil. The humiliation of being defeated by a song being sung to him ruined him in the long run.
Pokey's a liar. You aren't destroying "the embodiment of evil" at the end... Seems a lot more like Giygas became "the embodiment of suffering" and you're ending that suffering.
