Such a shame that the term "Gross" applies to Wario because of other devs handling him in that direction.
Wario and his Land series were made by R&D1 as a foil to Mario in every way. He's macho.
Wario Ware brought in the strong personality of his greed by entering the video game market. Make some quick cash.
Smash bros and other spin off, especially sport ones, are the reason behind his out of nowhere farts and gross humor. Incinuating that he's more of a trouble maker.
When in reality he started off as a villian then proceeded to only care if it benefitted him.

Actually, Wario has been gross since his inception... at least in Japan.
There was a really interesting series written by PushDustIn of SourceGaming which goes in-depth on the regional differences in how we perceive the character.
TL;DR Wario has always been crass and gross in Japan. In the west, we got more of a 'macho', villain-esque Wario.

Dude, I've always loved Wario. I love how they didn't have a marketing team trying to make him likable w mass appeal like they were forced to w Mario. They just kept giving him weird traits that made him unique.
I even remember asking my friends as a kid... "What's the deal with Wario? Like, Luigi is Mario's brother, Sooo... Where did Wario come from?"
Well unlike Bowser, Wario's heroics tend to happen by coincidence. Syrup was a random pirate lady in Wario 2, The evil clown was manipulating Wario in 3 and got killed for his troubles, in 4 Wario had no clue about the Golden Diva or the curse it all more or less solved itself, and in Disguise and Shake it the main villains were even worse people than Wario and everybody was happy that Wario won.

Actually Syrup started off in the first game where Wario was after a golden statue of Peach that Syrup and her crew had stolen(but Mario got to it first)stole all her treasure and her magic lamp so he could get enough money for a castle of his own due to losing the one in Mario Land 2. Wario succeeds in getting his own castle which then leads to Wario Land 2 where Syrup wants revenge on Wario.

i didnt like Wario because he was a capitalist. i liked him because he was just bigger, stronger and was invurnable. while mario needs power ups, wario uses his enemies to transform him and solve puzzles. Wario is pretty smart. In Wario land 3, he manipulates his enemies unknowingly to them to help him get treasures

It has been confirmed by Nintendo that Wario and Mario are cousins. Not to mention his reasons for not liking Mario. He was bullied by Mario as a child. It's confirmed in the official Nintendo Power "Super Mario Bros Adventures" issue 50 called "Mario vs Wario".
