This is an artificial controversy anyway. They aren't Korn or Tool. Sound engineering like that came after Metallica had half a dozen albums already. People complaining are tourists or die hard Burton fans. Newsted was a better bassist and it was mixed just fine live.

@imagereflection4826 you know what? I fact checked myself after I made that comment, then lazily never came back to correct it. You're right, tho. "To Live Is To Die" is the only song credited to Cliff, and that's basically a medley of different riffs he'd come up with before he died. That, and the second line of spoken lyrics was his. The first line was from German poet, Paul Gerhardt.
But yeah. I assumed wrong. The album was not nearly as directly influenced by Cliff as I thought it was.

I'd suggest anything live from Seattle 89, it's imo the best live concert.

I’m so glad you took the dive into Metallica. I’ve been watching the journey and it makes me proud. I think you understand why us old folks say the first 4 albums are the best. They became famous without radio play back then at least in most of the world. This kind of music didn’t get played on the mainstream radio. It was live shows, magazines and word of mouth. That’s why us older metal heads are such a dedicated bunch. I raised my boys on Metallica. I finally took them to see them live in 2018. They were 18 and 23 at the time. It was my best mom moment. They made me so proud! I also took my 4 nephews who are all around the same age. I was the only one who had ever seen them. It was honesty the best night ever.

They bag out Kirk's solo's but he always plays the solo in the direction you want it to go as a casual listener to make it sound good and not jarring like some other soloists. Then Lars aguably being a quarter beat out at times allows the the crunchy guitar and the music to breathe.

You’ll need to start listening to some of their cover songs soon. Metallica was known for their cool choice in cover songs. Many of the bands they covered reformed and had second careers due to the attention Metallica fans gave them. You might want to give nu metal a try then. Nu metal artists didn't want to give up listening to hip hop, but they also loved this, so eventually they decided to blend the two. Korn, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, System Of A Down, and others

LOL and this is 35+ yrs old. It was hard back then. It’s NOT hard by today’s standards. With that said this was last of Metallica.I’ll give them a little bit of credit for the black album but that’s it. They got WAY too soft. They’re loud light rock now

Besides the lyrics pointing to 'McCarthyism' in the US back in the 1950's, some fans have reffered to 'the bus ride in Scandinavia that wrecked and killed Cliff Burton. Before they left they drew straws to pick bunks. Cliff picked the shortest straw and had power of choice and picked Kirk's bunk. Cliff was the only one who died and he was in Kirk's bunk because of the shortest straw.' Chilling ...

I'm a big Slayer fan. My favorite. But, Metallica is badass. Another of my top bands is Helmet. You got to do Helmet 'Unsung ' and Helmet 'Milquetoast'. Early 90's, but awesome.
