  • This video is part 1, will cover a DD15 major overhaul, the engine block has been properly machined by the guys over at Engine Saver Reboring in Chino, California.
    I am going to break these videos down into parts, I will explain everything as clear as possible.
    This video includes main bearing installation, main bearing preparation and new crankshaft installation. Part 2 will go over how to torque the main bearings correctly and the torque specifications.
    I will also go over what tools are needed in order to complete the job properly.

    Good job but always check the machine shops work by placing the crankshaft in dry with plaster gauge and check your clearances then pull it back out and lube it. End play is also very important.👍

  • @mayorhaggar1275
    @mayorhaggar1275 3 года назад +2

    I was always told that lubing the threads can affect the torque due to less friction than what would have been tested when the torque specifications were originally decided.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  3 года назад +1

      That I am not sure of, if I am not mistaken, the book or service manual I have says to lube just the threads and not to dip the bolts into oil. Probably for the reason you mentioned. But I’ll double check the service manual when I get back. I would hate to give the wrong information.

    • @thereviewer4173
      @thereviewer4173 4 месяца назад

      The Cascadia workshop manual at the beginning of it does mention that the torque specs are for lubed threads, but it should only be 1-2 drops of oil.

    Quick question, can you replace rod bearings without taking piston off?

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Месяц назад

      Once you remove the oil pan and oil pump. You can rotate the engine to the desired piston (connecting rod) you want to work on. Remove the cap and replace the bearing. Remove the cap, push the connecting rod upwards. Slide the bearing out. Install the new upper bearing (add lube). Install the lower connecting rod cap with the bearing (add lube) the same way it was removed (very important). The cap is specific and must be installed the same way it was removed. Look at the side, you will see numbers. Torque to spec, this is most critical. Once you are done. Rotate the engine to make sure there is no binding and proceed from there.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  3 года назад +1

      You would have to pressurize the coolant and see which liner or liners are leaking coolant.
      This requires draining the oil, removing the oil pan so when the system is pressurized you can hopefully see which one is bad.

    By lubricate what do you mean ? Would I just go to a shop and ask them to lubricate my engine? And how long should a oem overhaul last?

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  3 года назад

      All good questions, when you lubricate, you install main bearings or rod bearings with some kind of assembly lube. There are many to choose from. Are you planning to change your main or rod bearings? Are you talking about an engine inframe or overhaul (rebuild).
      An over haul should last the same as a new engine depending on maintenance and other factors. Engines are expected to last 1,000,000 miles.

    My engine has a cracked liner
    With 700 thousands miles
    What all would you recommend getting rebuilt.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  3 года назад +1

      At 700K miles, I would recommend you consider a rebuild. If you just consider replacing the 1 liner, you have to ask yourself what are the conditions of other liners? Are you going to pull the others out for inspection? Then you are going to pay labor on all that.
      Try pricing out the cost for just the one liner, parts and labor.
      Then try pricing out the cost for the rest of the liners. See what the difference will be.

  • @jddees24

    Mine was just rebuilt, when they started it said at idle sounded fine, when they gave it some fuel it made a squealing/squeaky sound?? They found #1 upper/lower bearing scored replaced it tried again same noise- tearing it back down tomorrow ~ ideas??

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  3 года назад

      Prime the oil system correctly, try pushing about 3 gallons of motor oil. That oil is addition to the 10 gallons you are adding. Also, the oil filter, soak it with motor oil before installing.
      Check to make sure you are torquing the bearings correctly and evenly. So do a little on the left then to the right and so on.
      Use assembly lube to help. Once you are done, rotate the engine a few times.
      This will help to make sure it rotates freely without any binding or catching.

    • @CarlosDieselElectric
      @CarlosDieselElectric  Год назад +1

      To completely tear it down to the block, have all the machine work done, parts (inframe kit, cylinder head and injectors) then add labor. You are looking at around $35K to $40K
      If you add the crankshaft, turbo and fuel pump then the cost will increase $7K
      These things get ridiculously expensive.
