DD15 major overhaul Part 2 how to torque main bearings

- This video is part 2, will cover a DD15 major overhaul, as i mentioned in part 1, the engine block has been properly machined by the guys over at Engine Saver Reboring in Chino, California.
I am going to break these videos down into parts, I will explain everything as clear as possible.
In part 1, I went over main bearing installation along with installing a new crankshaft.
This video includes how to torque properly torque the main bearings in a four step process and the tools you will need. You will need a torque wrench, you can use 15/16 socket (12 point).
Here are the steps you will need to follow.
Step 1: 111 ft lbs
Step 2: 184 ft lbs
Step 3: 90 degree torque turn (almost equal to 400 ft lbs)
Step 4: 90 degree torque turn (almost equal to 600 ft lbs)
I recommend, in between each step to rotate the engine, this will verify that the engine can rotate freely and there is no binding or restrictions.
15:00 A torque multiplier is ideal, but it may be difficult to seat/secure around the block. I would assume a pneumatic impact drill with adjustable torque to slowly carefully get it to on the second 90 turn without breaking the bolt. I wouldn't know for sure. Outstanding video. Thanks!
Great video as always sir! Thank you 🙏🏻
Bon Travail avec les Méthodes de constructeur et pièces aussi ORIGINAL. .SALUTATIONS.
Full support sir!! Salute👍.. I think its in our blood being a mechanic. Fuentes clan from Philippines here.. Proud of you sir..
Thank you. I agree. Greetings “Salamat”
@@CarlosDieselElectric sir please help me how can i get dd13, dd15 & 16 workshop manual. Im going to work in australia. I want to purchase the manual that you were using. Thanks in advance..
@@boygrasagarage6243 I know they are available from Valley Power Systems in City of Industry, Ca 6263364656
You can try calling the parts department and ask for Steve or Nick. The book covers the DD platform which includes the DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines. There are two books that cover the DD platform one is the engine (lubrication, coolant and assembly) and a separate book that covers the fuel system. I have both.
Hope this helps you
@@CarlosDieselElectric thanks a lot sir..
Great work brother
Thank you
Where can I find that book, great video by the way!
Thank you.
The book can be purchased at Valley Power Systems in City of Industry, Ca.
Where are you located?
Thank you my truck is running super duper
Thank you very much❤❤❤
Excelentisimo video maestro estaria excelente que hiciera el video en español gracias
Very helpful at moment outstanding video
Thank you
Great shop fellas
Great job Carlos. You always explain the five "W" and that shows your knowledge and confidence. I like that. I also thinking to overhaul on my 2011 DD15 almost 900,0000. Any kindness advice pls.
Awesome stuff !!!! Thank you 🙏
Interesante vídeo si pudiera Aser más en español selo agradeceríamos mucho Omar Vidal le saluda desde Ilopango sansalvador
Good job 👌
Hey Carlos, can you explain what the difference between an inframe rebuild and an overhaul please? Keep up the good work!!
An inframe is done while the engine is still in the frame of the truck.
An overhaul would be removing the complete engine and breaking it down to the block and removing the crank. Barebones and then putting it all back together. The block should be inspected, especially the liner protrusion. A line bore should be done to ensure the crank will spin straight and true.
@@CarlosDieselElectric understood! Thank you sir for the reply.
AT CUMMINS WE USED A IMPACT FOR THE TORQUE ANGLE
Gracias maestro e aprendido mucho selo agradesco.
Gotta love doing an in shazzy build/bearing roll and torqin em upside down 😫 seen blokes get lazy and torque turn with a rattle gun but I'm not real keen on doin that.. just get the apprentice to swing 🤘🇦🇺
Great videos! Is the a video for the front main seal installation?
I do not have a video on that but that is good idea.
Thank you
Have you had an engine lock up on after following these footsteps? I keep hearing about these locking up after engine work being done.
Knock on wood. I have not had an engine lock up. The two most critical steps after you have put it together and before you crank the engine for the first time are.
Priming the oil system.
Priming the fuel system.
Those are most important. During this process I rotate the engine manually a few times. Then start the engine and let it do its thing. Don’t accelerate the engine, just let it idle.
I still get nervous before I crank the engine over but trust your work and that you did right.
@@CarlosDieselElectric thank you!!!
Nice thank you God bless
Thanks!!!
Nice
What is the correct way to prime the fuel system on a DD15 Detroit?
I have a video that goes over the fuel priming method. There are two ways, one is for your basic service or fuel filter change and the other requires fuel pressure at 95 psi for about 2-3 minutes. This allows fuel to go pass the Hi Pressure fuel pump, up through the common rail and into the fuel injectors.
What are you trying to do?
Thank you,Thank you..
Buenas tardes. Disculpa podrías poner un video de como instalar el engrane del cigüeñal? se pone con prensa o como se instala?

Hello Carlos. I got questions. In cold weather does the oil level shows low in deep stick ?. Freightliner cascadia 2011.
Can u use a torque multiplier to remove the main bolts cuz I'm having a hard time getting them off
We use a 1 inch impact or a 3/4 inch impact. A 1/2 will have a very difficult time.
try a ame 67300 nut buddy i have one but i havent dont a dd15 main cap yet
Hey really informative so I have a question. DD15 has been rebuilt twice each time spun a bearing during test drive, So less than 50 miles. Any thoughts of cause? I'm thinking torque procedure.
A few things come to mind.
1) torque procedure on the main and rods. In between each step we rotate the engine. This way we check for any binding or resistance.
2) lubricant, you have to prime the oil system prior to starting the engine. I also recommend rotating the engine manually before you start the engine. Helps to ensure oil is in the correct place. I am making a video on how we do it. Should be out in a few days.
3) fuel, prime the fuel system before starting the engine. This is critical so the engine starts quickly.
Hope this helps.

@@CarlosDieselElectric don’t you need to a new block if you spun the mains for the dd15? That’s what TAT express says
@@poonetidestroyer8955 the machine shop we use specializes in engine blocks and making them good as new. Knock on wood, I have had zero issues with the blocks they have worked on.
We use Engine Saver Reboring in Chino, Ca. Dan and Justin are father and son.
@@CarlosDieselElectric I see that’s awesome. But what is the reason a new block is needed when you spin the mains on a dd15? What part of the block usually gets damaged?
Also whenever you change out the mains on a dd15 that didnt spin the bearings, do you also need to change out the crankshaft or just have it machined? If doing a lower end rebuild for example(mains, oil pump/suction manifold)
And how much would you charge for that? Thanks
What oil clearance main and rod bearing thank’s
Excelente cuando lo publican en español
Can a 200 lb torque wrench do the 90 degree turn … since it’s about 400 lb tightness .?
I would recommend using a 3/4 or 1 inch wrench to make the turn. You don’t want to damage the torque wrench.
After u mark the 90s can u use an impact instead of ratchet?
I recommend to not use an impact because you need to achieve the torque turn using a ratchet.
I know that achieving the 90 plus the additional 90 will be difficult but you need to stretch the bolt to really seat it into place. Also, don’t forget to rotate the engine in between to make sure there is no binding and the engine rotates with ease.
@@CarlosDieselElectricthank you last question are the bolts one time use torque to yield or reusable.
@@INBINC you can measure them and they should fall within specs, normally you can reuse them once. I have been able to reuse them and have had no issues. Are you changing bearings or doing a rebuild?
@@CarlosDieselElectricneither just asking out of curiosity. thanks for video
@@INBINC No problem, I don't mind questions. I try to get back to them ASAP.
Do you a rebuild book for maxxforce 13 ,Or video?
D the truck guy @dthetruckguy has videos with the Maxxforce. I don’t work on that particular engine.
Like damn jus how much torque those bearings need i dont even put that much on my wheel studs and am only 130lbs
Yeah, the last 90 degree torque turn is about 650 foot pounds (ft. lbs).
The tolerances are very small when it comes to the DD15. This is why oil pressure (lubrication) is so critical.
🔥🎯👍
Where you located your shop please I need overholl
We are in Montebello, Ca
Where can I get the book for this engine.thank you.
I purchased my copy from Valley Power Systems in City of Industry
It is worth the investment.
Question whats the fuel pressure at idle supposed to be at on dd15. And and with a load??
Idle arround 250 bars and up to 600 bars
scary when you hold on the socket, seen them explode before :/
Never occurred to me that a socket can explode. I’ll definitely take that into consideration.
Have a question can the degrees be done at ones instead of 2 steps?
The book says two steps. This is to help stretch the bolt and reach the maximum and allow the saddle to sit evenly.
I have never done it in one.
@@CarlosDieselElectric k thank for the info…….

What the cost for part and labor to work on it ?
Your typical inframe (without removing the engine block and crank) runs about 17K for parts and labor. The extra work we have done here in these videos requires more labor.
em xem rồi, em cảm ơn anh nhiều lắm, em ngủ đây vì việt nam lúc này là 10:25PM rồi anh ơi
I have seen engines built at Mercury Marine and here and neither of you uses plastie gauge as they do in race car engines. Why ??
The thrust washer allows for play. To be honest I have never seen anyone use them on Diesel engine applications for bearings (rod or main).
I imagine on race engines the room for error is on a different level.
Now this engine block just came back from a machine shop. They line bored and machined the upper and lowers where the liners sit. So I am very comfortable with just installing and torquing.

How hard is it to go from English to Spanish, then Spanish back to English? Do you ever get confused, maybe forget who you're talking to?
I try to plan and rehearse before I start to record so I don’t mess up too badly.
I don’t like to mix up English and Spanish in normal conversations. Although most of my customers are Spanish speaking so it isn’t too bad.
What is the name of your dd15 engine manual
It is a service manial that I purchased as a set from Valley Power Systems (City of Industry, Ca.). I am sure you can order it from Detroit Diesel 800-445-1980 is that number that I have. I am not sure if is available in PDF or in book format.
Best money I spent, book covers so much, especially if are going to work on DD series engines and aftertreatment.
@@CarlosDieselElectric thanks alot
How much
How much for an overhaul?
For a job that requires the engine block to be removed, machined and then put all back together is about $25-30K for original parts and labor.
This typically does not include injectors or hi pressure fuel pump.
How long usually takes for the job

Voy a tratar de ser más en español. 👍🏼

I am so screwed...I need an engine rebuild on a MAN D2156...and the manuals (multiple ones) are written by monkeys on crank...NO torque values for anything, and the part on installing main bearings and con rod bearings and caps use these convoluted way of explaining and going off the gap left between the block (or con rod) and cap. Not sure how you do this precisely, not to mention they tell you to add tape, like a bandaids (the old school stuff that came on a roll), and then tigthten the bolts. I think Im never going to rebuild this. Just horrible writing, and no info....I dont know how Europe ran these engines for 70 years...but then again, they all ran like garbage...
