- In this video, part 3 of the DD15 major engine overhaul, I will be going over how to install the liners and what you will need.
The liner part number based on the VIN number I am working on is DDE A4720111910. The kit includes the liner, seals (upper and lower) and the carbon scraper ring that sits at the top of the liner.
You will need clean motor oil, you can use the Detroit tool to install your liner which I believe is a J-47407 and runs about $ 350 - $650 or you make your own liner installation tool with something you probably have laying around your shop. You may need to be a little creative, but it works just as well. I got the idea from a friend that did engine work and I am able to use this on other engines.
Enjoying your content man! Really wish you had a rebuild video for a Big Cam Cummins 😂! Thanks for taking time to show this stuff off!
Thanks, very informative, this video needs more likes!!
Love the video..keep the good work

Amazing job with the videos on the DD 15 build debating if I should pay someone with experience or rebuild it myself Time consuming though
official again count since I started watching your videos 1k and counting....
Good job Maestro
Thank you, Gracias
Carlos great Video again. You never let us down also like the English & Spanish in one Video awesome. Question how much does a Complete overhaul cost on a DD15 ?
An overhaul will cost about $17-20K. For a job like the one in the video where the engine block comes out. The cost is more for labor and machine work.
InstaBlaster.
Did I miss your dry run liner height check ?
Failure analysis I've done over years has lead to the highlighting thst if your lubricating seals use vegetable oil or liquid soap of some kind, mineral oils are not friendly to all liner seals, I know the lower ones can be exposed to crank case oil but not all liner seal materials are the same so use something thst is going to be cleaned away by coolant preferably
The block is inspected upper and lower. The upper is usually cut for bushings and a liner is installed and measured for protrusion. I don’t do this myself. I have the guys at Engine Saver Reboring (located in Chino, California) come over and perform this. I have heard of vegetable oil or shortening being used on the seals but have never tried this. I usually just stick to what the book says.
Gracias
Good information
Thank you
Any advice for doing my first inframe overhaul
I am loving your work sr where exactly are you located?!
We are in Montebello, Ca. 90640.
@@CarlosDieselElectric Wow,I was hoping that you said Texas.I have watched a couple of your videos & love the way that you do your work.
Great video! How much did the oem kit cost ?
Thank you
Where are you all located? I've not been able to find that information just yet. Wish you folks were close to where I am. I've got a situation now, that I'm positive you all could solve after watching a few of your videos. Good stuff!!
The outside of those liners are in the cooling system of the engine, wouldn't it be better to use coolant to lubricate the O rings?
Good question, I believe the book says clean motor oil so when the oil is applied to the seal it will swell and helps create the seal around the liner. Although I have heard from an old timer to use crisco shortening oil. I have not tried that either. Maybe I afraid if it does go well I’ll have to do it all over again.
@@CarlosDieselElectrichow much this overhaul job costs parts and labor separately please
Good job! Did you do the part 4?
I am working on just editing part 4, it will cover the piston assembly, install and torque.
Just did overhead on a DD13 today... give me a DD13 anyday rather than the MP8.... lol
Why didn’t you install the liner before you put the block in the truck?
No particular reason for putting the liners in after. Just preference.
Your better off using dawn dish soap for the liners and rubber liner seals than oil,,
@@nightstorm9128 👍🏼 appreciate the tip. I’ll try that.
How do you know the liner is correct height. When do you know to stop or keep going?
When the block was at the machine shop they check for height protrusion. If the height isn't there then they will machine it so when the liner is installed it will be within factory specs.
As for the second question, when you install the liner, it will bottom out and not go in any further. Again, no need to apply pressure beyond the normal, you will feel when it reaches.
If you need the height let me know, I will have to check the book.
@@CarlosDieselElectric yes please can you give me the heights. 2016 dd15. Also what tool is needed to check the height? Mabey I can order tool online. Thanks. Is there a way I can email you for questions?
@@transport21 now I don’t know what tools are needed. I would contact a machine shop that is familiar with the tools needed. But let me check on the specs.
My email address is carlosdiesel@sbcglobal.net
I’m going ty step out on a limb and ask you a question?🤓What does the metal ring do?
Carbon scraper
@@CarlosDieselElectric does the carbon scraper adjust the liner protrusion?Ive seen some shim up to adjust the liner protrusion with Cat engines for example?do I have to be concerned about liner protrusion?🙂
@@landonbrown6568 no, the liner protrusion is already set within the engine block. All the engines are have done, we have the liner protrusion measured and if it needs to be cut, we have it cut.
At what miles should a DD15 get over hauled. My truck has 600,000 miles
You still have plenty of life left on that motor, most trucks will not need an overhaul until they hit 1,000,000 miles. With good maintenance you will be fine.
I have done overhauls on engine that have reached 1.1 million miles and in some cased 1.2 million miles.
Donde están ubicado su shop amigo
Estamos en la ciudad de Montebello, Ca 90640
nice
Nice, what was the year of the truck? What price for one liner kit? Thanks
Thank you. The truck is a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia
You can find the liners online for about $130 a piece
Thanks
@@CarlosDieselElectric What is the engine overhau cost and calibration cost for the turbo?
@@deeb1504 DD15 does not have a turbo calibration.
I am working on a video to go over the cost. Hope to have it out soon
God jobs
Thank you

What about liner height?
Great question, in my previous video I described the engine block was serviced at Engine Saver Reboring in Chino, CA. They go through the entire block. Hot tank, Line bore, they also check the uppers and lowers the ensure the liner height is spot on. I have had Dan and Justin work on other DD15 engines that I have worked on before and have not had any issues. They are very good at what they do.
Hey we get to put a face to the voice, you're older then I thought.
😆
