We will miss our fleet of 12.7 series 60s when they are gone. None of the new emission engines compare in terms of reliability. Detroit, Cat, Cummins, Volvo emission engines can all be found beside your favorite interstate puking their guts out. The pre-emission 12.7 was a true money-making piece of cast iron and steel.

ive never seen an engine that clean...especially with 700k miles on it. i call shananigans.

I do have to say. I've been working on the DD series for 6 years at Freightliner. The engine would not be that clean for sure. Cam frames, oil/coolant modules, crankcase vapor separator, and air compressors are the most common leaks. That's the biggest thing I fix is oil leaks. Very few valve cover, front/rear main seals, and rear structure gaskets. I've seen plenty with holes clear through the block for no reason, some had reasons due to neglect. Over all the performance of a 495 hp DD13 to a 515 hp 14.0 S60 the DD13 will run circles around the S60. DD15 is tuned for fuel economy so it doesn't pull as aggressive as a 13 or 16, unless you get one with 561 hp then it will pound the ground! If your looking at getting a DD series engine here's some tips. Got service history if possible. A dealer should be able to get the claims history. Around 450-500k miles you'll see came frames leaking, engine sensor harnesses will fail due to wires chaffing inside the loom, and oil pickup tube orings causing low oil pressure at start up. Dpf's will usually last 450-600k depending on operating loads and such. SCR cat will last around 650k unless a previous failure burned them out or poisoned them. Early DD series (08-12) had injector cup orings problems, but most all of them would have failed and been repaired by now. The internal shots in the video are exactly what I've seen in the field. I pulled one down that had 850k miles and had a wrist pin retainer fail. All the bearing looked brand new. Liners and rings had wear but plenty of life left in it. These bearings are very sensitive to dirty and low oil pressure. They can scratch and be fine, but if something big enough gets in the material flakes off, or metal to metal contact, and then its by by rod or main bearing. These have spattered bearings, not multi-layer. I do like this engine. Its easy to service and maintain, but parts are $$$$ and parts availability is still a problem 10 years after introduction. It's still a machnical thing made by humans and maintained by humans, so you'll still have problems here and there. The things can't handle lack of care like the S60 did, but you can overheat them to 265*F and they'll be just fine; dang belt driven water pump. I'd like to hear from the Euro truck drivers about the equivalent om470, 471, and 473. Is there an om472? Any questions just ask.

    Why ruin a good motor

I work on these engines a lot and if properly maintained you can reach 1,000,000 miles with ease.

The forgot to mention the 235 times this engine went to the shop for emission related issues . I'll take a series 60 with 500k over a brand new DD15 any day and twice on Sunday .

the problem is never the engine its always an emission system problem. my truck has broke down twice and both times were emission. the nox sensor and a def injection block.

My friend has 1.300.000 miles on his 2010 cascadia DD15 engine. It does consume lots of oil, but it’s still running. Mine got 912.000 miles 505 HP and I never ad any oil from change to change.

I worked on freightliner for 7 years and not once have a seen a dd15 without any leaks. This was a rare 💎

Three weeks ago i went out on a road service call when the driver said his DD15 went pop & shut down on I-15. Right before I got to him I stopped & picked up the connecting rod lying in the middle of the road. #2 rod went out the left side of the block, bounced on the road then knocked a hole in the power divider front cover before taking a line off a trailer brake can. It had 36k miles on it. Oh & I really love the location of the air compressor too, on the left rear behind the fuel system.

I have 960k on my dd15 and never have had a major repair and never been towed. Lifetime average mpg 8.6. My truck has amazing power. I run only the western US and hardly ever downshift on grades.

This teardown and inspection is not at all biased lol, in my experience if an engine with any miles on it doesn't leak it's because there isn't any oil in it. Especially these new regen engines the heat cycles are insane. ice cold egts 80% of the time to meet the unrealistic nox levels, and dumping raw fuel in the exhaust to burn something that is already burnt. That is a recipe for failure in any engine, that engine was definitely cleaned inside and out for this ADVERTISEMENT before hand, also love how that TECHNICIAN dragged the conrod along the cylinder wall!

760K on a maintained big motor isn't anything special. Start checking after a million.

I have a 2015 Detroit DD16 with 284600 oilfield miles and 13,200 hrs on it. Haven't touched anything but for P.M. service and belts. Never have had any DPF filter issues. I use lucas fuel additive every other fill-up and Lucas Diesel DPF DEEP CLEAN every 6 weeks.😎👍

I have 750k on mine and have replaced all my injectors, egr cooler, radiator, starters, alterators, multiple sensors of all kinds,Sam computer, and now in shop needing a 1 box. NOT FLAWLESS AT ALL. Maintained regularly with synthetic oil Lucas and motorkote. Truck even has APU for low idling hours.
