I think maybe you glossed over that the Fjallraven are made in Sweden by a company that highly prizes sustainability, whereas Columbia manufactures everything in east Asia, and mostly countries with little or no human rights or environmental oversight.

I try to avoid FJ products all together. as most of the time they are way more expensive than locally handmade alternatives. completetly bonkers...
160 dollars divided by 10 yrs makes it 16 bucks a yr. That isn't too bad is it? Let's be real here, Columbia is trash compared to FR., remember to look at longevity
Best pants I ever had. They last like forever. I always go "off trail", often in rough weather. I use them in forest and mountains in Sweden where we have rain, snow, sleet, wind and it is normally never hot. I guess they are a too heavy duty-ish for hot sunny climate. They will eventually get wet in persistent rain, even if waxed. I use rainpants then. If they get wet they dry out really fast. You can sit close to the fire without any worries :)

I think you shouldnt consider price as an absolute. These pants can be worn for decades, wich makes them rather cheap, imo. I love my Vidda Pro Ventilated, wearing them every day.
I disagree, the Vidda Pro are the best outdoor trousers on the market. I’ve had a pair for 15 years and it’s never failed me. But these are the heaviest of pants in the Fjällräven lineup. The Abisko Lite and Midsummer Trousers are what I hike in mostly. For more technical treks, the Keb Trousers are the gold standard!

Hi there, I have the abisko midsummer pants as well and love them. I was thinking about buying these though for cooler spring and fall weather. Do you think it's worth it or can I just wear merino tights under the abisko mid summer trousers? The high of the day is usually 10 to 13 degrees celsius in spring or fall when I would want them. I'm mostly canoe tripping and hiking on well established trails.

Fjallraven Keb trousers are more hiking (technical).
All this trousers are one of the best outdoor stuff.

I patiently wait for Fjallraven to do a sale, at least twice annually, when purchasing. The quality, fit and utility is terrific. I have a pair of the ventilated Vidda Pro pants for warmer weather.
A feature that stands out for me is the high waist. Far too many pants come in mid rise. A higher waist works better when tucking in your shirt, is more secure on your waist and offers better protection.
From a hunter, these pants are incredible, last forever and are actually cheaper than comparable pants from hipster hunting brands like Sitka and first life
Vidda Pros seem to be everyone's first foray into Fjallraven outdoors pants, probably because of their relatively cheap price as compared to their other offerings. They are too heavy for hiking unless its winter. They make great camp pants for hanging out, but you'll overheat in no time if you try to trek with them on. Keb Agiles are a great all around style that work for camping as much as for hiking and climbing mountains. I use their Abisko Midsummer pants well into the Fall in New England.
agree, I don’t consider these hiking pants either. Great for the outdoors in general, but overkill and too heavy for just walking/hiking. Not a bad thing, as I don’t think Fjällräven considers these hiking pants either.
I wish Fjallraven would realize they created the best pants for (some) wheelchair users! No pockets, buttons, or seams on the butt is absolutely perfect. I wear these when I teach Elementary School on snowy days and am stuck outside using my manual chair while the kiddos romp in the snow. They are very warm and give my legs protection. I bought the Ovik down Coat a few years ago on sale when they discontinued it (brought it down to a price I could afford). Turned out to be the best coat I have ever owned and fits like a glove. I rolled the dice on these pants and they are amazing- and also fit like a glove. Maybe Grandpa being a Swede helped tho🙂. Given that I plan on wearing them for 5+ years- They are worth it and I'm gonna probably get another pair.
Good review. I agree these pants are great for rough use like bushcraft, bushwhacking or work pants, but overkill for fast trail hiking. I use mine as motorcycle touring pants as well as hiking as they’re tough enough for crash protection and you can put in knee pads. The cargo pockets are easy to use while sitting on the bike. Mine have the zipper side vents for hot weather. The manufacturer says they can be washed several times before needing rewaxing. The wax isn’t actually needed at all or you can add more to increase the water repellent properties. As they come from the factory the water repellency is great. Dirt doesn’t really stick well to these pants so they usually only need spot cleaning/wiping if anything.

I think that conditions make the biggest difference. Designed in Sweden, for Swedish hiking culture, these fit great if most of your hikes are in the forests, on the narrow trails, surrounded by bushes etc. Naturally, if you plan to hike through the area with close to no vegetation or occasional bush here and there - these don't make too much sense, but realistically, these are probably the best pants if you want a "one-pair-do-it-all". As for the beeswax treatment - I would put it as a benefit rather than a negative thing, since you can easily control how much water resistance and breathability you get without spaying your garment with layers of chemical water resistance substances.
I bought a jacket from fjallraven and man that’s the best quality jacket I EVER bought. Whenever I wear it I instantly feel that it will last forever. Sometimes I go to my local adventure shop to try some different brands but whenever you try fjallraven it just overshadows all the other brands.
Absolutely. I got stuff from all kinds of brands, but at the end I always come back to FR clothes and gear. It is not cheap for sure, but it is the best on the market.

They do look awesome and in hiking 'form' can trump 'function'. You won't be disappointed.
Best pants I ever bought. Been hiking since I was a kid and I've had maybe two or three pairs over the course of 20 year. The last pair held up to rough use for about 10 years before I had to buy new ones. It's not remotely comparable to cheaper pants if you want to get longevity out of your purchase.
The price is high, but as a Rope Access Technician these pants are perfect. With g1000 fabric they don't wear out as fast and with the pockets located forward on the thighs we cal still access them while suspended by ropes.
Have you worried about reapplying the wax for water resistance? I have never reapplied it.
I haven't applied it either, but thats simply because I didn't have a reason too. I've made my own waxed tarps in the past and it's a really easy process if you wanted to apply it.
I haven't tried these pants but I have a Fjällräven jacket. The wax is easy to apply. I use a blow dryer to melt after applying, there are videos on how to do. To get a smoother look just put it in the tumble dryer for a while. (You have to tumble dry gore tex clothes as well to reactivate the membrane after a wash).
Love my fajallraven pants they are the best pants you will ever own . I have multiple items of clothing from them. They are all great . I would wear these over the thin pants any day. Like you said they are like armor . The wind proof factor really helps keep you warm in cold weather. And when I go off trail mushroom hunting they protect to from all kinds of stickers
High price but you get what you pay for. These are very well made and after I applied the wax treatment, they are very water resistant. Best hiking pants (and shorts) I’ve ever owned or used including REI, Kuhl, Arc’teryx, Mammut and other high-end outdoor clothing. Comparing them to Columbia is like comparing a Tesla to a Chevy Volt - they do the same thing but that’s all they have in common. Columbia, Nike and the like are nothing but entry level junk made in sweatshops and they don’t last.
I own 5 pairs of the Keb, and a single pair of Vidda Pro. The VP is great for bushcraft and camping; whereas the Kebs are more suited for hiking and backpacking due to their venting zippers. I’ve owned my Fjällräven gear for about 5 years with zero signs of wear(this includes some of their hiking bags). Overall, if I didn’t need dress pants for work I’d wear these trousers exclusively. Being that they are derived from the Nordic region, they’re well suited for that climate. Personally, I’d rather wax a pair of trousers once a year versus throwing away a pair of Columbia pants every season. Just my .02$
There's a "ventilated" version of the Vidda Pros - have you looked at them at all? I tend to run on the warm side, so your comment got me wondering whether these would be better or worse than the Kebs
I have, but I already own 4 pairs of various Keb trousers ; so I have enough for a while. For bushcraft I think the VP’s are great, and for hiking etc, I like the Kebs.

Thanks for your opinion/review. That being said (imho) if price were a factor as it is for most they more than likely have no idea of this brand. You are right on the price per wear/use consideration, these are my equivalent to Allen Edmonds. In the right environment they make a statement.
Back when they actually made these in Sweden, I could understand the price but now that they are made overseas at a fraction of the cost yet kept the price sky high, I lost interest.
I think you nailed the review. More bushcrafter than hiker. The type to make fire than bring a stove, to bring a wool blanket than down quilt etc.
is 165 really a lot for pants that last years? idk man even on a super strict budget these seem like the best deal. second comment mentions 15 years of use, Luke from The Outdoor Gear Review has had his for 7+ and swears by them.

One pair of pants that does it all. Try the Vidda Pro ventilators. I'm so done with cheap, flimsy Columbia/patagonia/north face that use the caustic Gore-Tex manufacturing process. These things are bullet proof and you don't need to wax that often, just wash in cold water and wax seasonally only. The wax washes off with hot water and soap, great for spring, summer, fall. I would take only one pair for hiking and no regrets.
These pants are worth the price tag. In mushroom picking season these will be awesome. I am pretty hard on my outdoor gear. Vancouver island is a boreal rainforest with really think bush
I just got a pair of the G-1000, I don’t hike a lot, but I do a lot of trails in a side by side, these will ensure a comfortable ride especially if there will be a lot of mud and water. Can’t wait to try them out. Yeah super pricey, but the longer they last, the cheaper they become.

A question could be , why do you need to wash this kind of pant ? it is like a jeans, you don't need to wash them until they are completely dirty ... I wash my cotton hunter pant once a year , and I wear them a lot !!! gain for me and for our planet... :) For hiking I recommend the new Vidda with ventilation. Thanx for the vid !

You should upgrade to the Keb (non full gaiter version). They have more stretch and are more hike orianted than the Vidda Pro. The Keb's are literally the most comfortable pant I've ever purchased that will last a LONG time.
I use them in Ireland where it rains a lot and I’ve used a lot of supposed water proofed kit. I value quick drying time . And these dry quick.
Here in Italy I can only use them in the colder months.
One good thing about wax is you can treat only the bum while leaving the rest relatively breathable. Goretex wears out, clogs and doesn’t do well with salt water. When I moved to the EU I bought a waxed Barbour jacket. I’ll never went back. I have these pants, they are great. Doesn’t bother to rewax after winter, have to deep wash and check for repairs anyway. Also in these unstable times I only buy things that really last. Who knows when cheap, techy hiking pants will disappear off the shelves? Maybe forever.

Bought this pants recently and they are made now in Vietnam.
So your downside about having to treat it with wax after you wash it is not a downside. Because during summer the fabric will be breathable if there is no wax. And when winter comes you have tue option to wax it to keep the warmth in and keep the water out.
I use the Vida Pro Vented ones and I wear these everyday. My new favorite pants. All year pants.
I agree for the most. However not the water reppellent part. You don't have to use wax. Fjalraven wants you to do so of course... they are selling wax. I use a simple common WR spray. That works equal, or maybe even better than wax.

They are great, tough and hard wearing. well worth the price,(IMO) (for bushcraft camping in woods,etc. but,.. They are not made in Sweden, see text inside on pocket.
you can also wax them with fjallraven's greenland wax to waterproof parts, eg: legs. butt,..or all of them. even unwaxed they dry very quickly when soaked. the same applies to the vidda pro jacket.

If you wash them at 30° or lower then the wax is mostly retained. I own multiple pairs of Fjallraven pants, and despite them being made in Asia for the most part, the quality control is extremely high. They are very well designed and comfortable pants and will last well over a decade if looked after. Maybe a little warm for some climates, but in northern Europe I wouldn't wear any other brand. The price is fully justified as it's not 'fast fashion' or something you need to buy every couple of years.
The comment about temperature is totally subjective. Basically any light pair of pants work for hiking. The bad thing about these is the legs don't come off for shorts, which is the best option for trail hiking shorts. As for real things like hunting, construction and military, get something real like cotton duck or standard army pants as the G1000s are really for style not function in tough environments.

Is this hook annoying or not? Will I be able in small hikes to forget it and not ruin my pants or cause pain to my legs? I would not like to use it often. Only in snow maybe. So it is possible not to use it and stay "ghost"? Is there any small case where it is hiding or something?

You forget that the durability is a lot longer than the thin cheap fabrick you showed to aprox 60 dollars. I have had the fjælræven Vidda pro more than 10 years and used them a lot, both hiking, sailing etc. And they are still going...

Not good for hiking in temperatures above 15 celcius, at least not for me on the Kungsleden trail in subarctic Sweden in 2022. Despite the ventilation features they were too hot for me.

This is very typical commentary/recommendations for your climate as well (somewhere in California?).... For those of us in cooler climates like Canada, or even cooler (northern Canada) they're perfect, though, I agree, a little heavy-duty for light and quick fast-hikes...
Fjallraven does make lighter versions though. These are their heaviest duty I believe.

Nice, comprehensive review. There are a few points with which I disagree.
• Perhaps you purchased a pair which were a bit to snug (vanity?), but I find the 'map' posket to be quite roomy for its purpose - to carry flat reference material, whether maps, passport, a notebook, etc. My agreement lies in the snugness of the sloped pockets at the top; they are a bit too snug for inserting one's hands to keep warm.
• I have two pair of Vidda Pro pants - the Gen1 version, w/o vents, and the Gen2 version, w/vents. These are my go-to pants for hiking and outdoor activities from fall through spring and in cool climates. Without wax (see below), they are lightweight and fairly (see below) durable, and the enhanced storage is useful.
• These pants *DO NOT* come waxed. One can purchase wax and apply it for added water and wind resistance, but that is an added feature.
My only complaints with these pants is related to the durability of the fabric. Waxing them does increase the performance quality. I did not initially wax my first pair and within four months of heavy use, the fabric in the knees abraded and wore through to the underlying fabric layer. After repairing them and immediately upon purchase of a second pair, I waxed them and have experienced more durability from the fabric.
I think a comment was made during the video that these are made of 65% cotton and 35% polyester. That is incorrect, the proportions are reversed - they are 65% polyester/35% cotton.

You didn't wear/bring it because you have other pants? or you chose to wear other pants? Someone new surely can buy Vidda Pro as first as their outdoor/hiking pants and have it as their ONLY one. Than they would wear it all the time.
It's like my vehicle, I own a front wheel drive sedan which I drive to everywhere, camping, road trips, light enough dirt roads for back country because this is the only vehicle I have. If I had a second vehicle, a 4x4/AWD of sort... I think you can guess which vehicle I would take when going on more of a rougher road/ snowed areas. Same goes other way around, if I only have SUV/truck, I would drive that everywhere too, right? even groceries.
Sure, Vidda Pro is expensive but I would still recommend it. Heck, I'll just tell them just get this one pants and be done with it.

That is why it is called a map pocket, not a bulky item pocket!! There trousers are designed around the European experience.
Their certainly not cheap, but for the manufacturing quality, its a price worth paying.

Well - given they are likely to last you a lifetime - mine is on the 12th year being used for everything from hiking to hunting - I’d said they are in fact quite cheap
On the water resistant part: no pants, except rain pants, are waterproof, so don’t swim in them - get out of the rain and if you didn’t make that in time, they dry up really fast - so absolutely disagree on your review 😊

FR v cheap pants my vidda pro’s last around five years for hiking and hunting. Cheap pants a year if that. Also they dry quicker than anything else I’ve owned. I have a pair that I keep waxed and one unwaxed for summer. Great pants. Hold out for sale prices. I also have a pair of Drev pants which are great too.
Revolution race has as good or better pants for half the price!
BTW... The camera person doesn't have to keep your face on camera to hear your voice, closeups of the pants areas would have been nice.

The Vidda Pro LITE version beats the original in every way. The original shown in this video is extremely bulky towards the ankel and has endless amounts of excessive fabric

Not worth the price in my opinion. Wear out in the crotch very quickly. I've had a pair of MEC pants far longer than these pants and they show no sign of wearing out. Also, half the price. Save your money I would say but what do I know?
I recently was forced to buy another pair of Vidda Pro trousers because, after 10 years, I outgrew my first pair. My story was that the pants shrunk, but we all know that I expanded. So I had to get a size larger, and my wife confiscated my originals and now she enjoys them. The salesperson looked at my 10 year old pants and commented on how well they are holding up. There was no hesitation on my part when considering a replacement for the originals- straight to the store and more Fjallraven! I would not trust mec for the same longevity…

Out of 3 pairs keb 2 vidda pro.. two vidda pro got returned after 2 weeks frayed crotch area on one and totally failed stitching same area .. fjallraven arent made in sweden MADE IN VIETNAM !!! get it right ..the quality is questionable ..thank god for revolution race pants
