    The thing where the neck meets the headstock. It's called a volute. It both reenforces the weak point of the neck and provides a more positive reference for the hand.

  • @Ahrayeph
    @Ahrayeph 5 лет назад +6

    Original RG 550''s necks were also satin finish. I used to own an original Road Flare Red which I bought new in 1988 and its neck also had a satin finish. It's just that when you play them for a long time, they get buffed to a gloss from your left hand moving across the neck. So if that yellow is an '87, of course the neck will be glossy. The same thing will happen to the Genesis Road Flare Red RG if someone buys it and plays it regularly for six months or even less. I loved that '88 RG and I'm sad I had to let it go so I could buy my first Les Paul, so I'm considering getting a Genesis now, even though I'm not sure about the super thin neck. I liked the fatter neck on the '88 just fine.

      @@mattmengel4622 depends on the 550. They were less consistent back then. Some even had Jem necks in the assembly. Watch the video on the 550 by Ibanezguy88. He has several 80s 550 and the new Genesis and they all have different neck profiles and thickness.

    I am debating whether or not get a new Ibanez 5x0/7x0ish or get old and original 5x0/7x0 from the 90's. I dont like super thick neck and it is important it stays in tune well. Which one you think I should get? It will be my shred guitar

    • @MaxSoloMusic
      @MaxSoloMusic  6 лет назад

      Well, I believe both will do great! The Genesis will definitely be more stable because of 3-piece neck and all the state-of-the-art things they used to produce it. • @SteelSkin667

      Yeah maybe the volute but the neck width for sure ! It's crazy how millimeters can affect your playing. I think that a small difference will affect your fingers muscle memory and everything will seem off for a while. What a good idea! There’s so much debate over which is better; the reissue, or the original?
    I have both, and while the difference is negligible, the neck on the original RG550 is 17mm at the 1st fret, whereas, with the reissue, the thickness is 18mm at the 1st fret. I would only be able to tell the difference after playing one of the two for a bit of time, and then picking up the other. And even then, the difference elicits nothing more than a slight head turn.
    Other than the slight increase in thickness, these guitars are the EXACT same to me.
    If you want the thinness of the original RG550, get the RG1550 (still in production)! It has the exact same neck profile and it has the “all access neck joint” so you don’t have to fight the “rectangle of death” they call a neck joint that comes on the 550.

    That “bulge” behind the headstock (behind where it meets the nut) it’s called a VOLUTE, kinda like violins have. I believe (not sure though) that Gibson was one of the first to use volutes, I think mostly in the 70s and some 80’s Les Pauls. I’ve never seen one on a non-Gibson guitar, however, at least to me, I do like it - it sort of gives some extra mass and makes you grip the guitar neck in a more “determined” way, besides the fact that I believe it was introduced as a measure to prevent broken headstocks - which Gibsons can be a bit prone to because of the angled headstock (unlike Fender Strats, for example). I’m glad they went with it on the Genesis series, I’m actually fighting a strong “G.A.S.” attack, telling myself: “I don’t need another guitar, I don’t need another guitar”… lol. So far it’s working, but from experience, it usually takes over. I’m looking specifically at the RG565 (Genesis), which my local Ibanez dealer has a couple in stock, but, I don’t see the 565 on Ibanez’s catalog, just the 550…

  • @shovington67

      I didn't know that was a thing until I picked up a used RG470 at the local shop and thought "huh, it's glossy?" and one of the guys explained that it meant that it had been played in over the years to the point that it glossed up. pretty neat!

    One of the big things about the return of the RGs as the "Genesis" was the return the Ibanez Edge. It was strange when Ibanez discontinued the RG5xx's, then they brought them back again at one point, and then they started the whole "Premium' stuff as well as renamimg them RG 2550 or whatever. I still have my 1987 (serial#) RG 560 (Carotene Orange so painted and sold in 1988) and they didn't 'need' to change a thing this whole time lol. Notice the difference in the position of the Volume pots though, they changed those in 1989.

  • @4004010
    @4004010 5 лет назад +2

    Well. The two big difference points is the 87 has a wizard neck + v1/s1/v2 pickups set.
    Whereas (2017/18) genesis has a superwizard neck + v7/s1/v8.
    Ibanez could make a genesis in the same profile as the original 87. However it would envolves more costs in line production to reintroduce a old way manufacturing.
    However, in my opinion, about the necks comparison. In spite of the super wizard not has the 80’s vibe, it’s more modern and strong.
    Otherwise, i think the old set pickups has more “vintage” sound.

      4004010 Agreed. I own a Genesis and the pickups really aren’t great. Definitely not the worst I’ve ever heard, but could definitely be a lot better. I’ve never played one from the 80’s but the one in this video sounds better to my ears.

    I think she is feeling the fact that the necks are slightly thicker on the Genesis reissues than on the original RG guitars and thats why the original feels shorter to her. I have the Premium Universe (UV70P) and a friend of mine has an original early 90s Universe and the differences are similar. his has a slightly thinner neck and a tremolo that is stamped with "licensed under floyd rose" and mine has a thicker 5 piece neck with a non-licensed trem. The necks are the same length but the original feels "smaller".

    So the reissue's v8/v7 are better than v2/v1 in that case? I don't know as it's about advertising. Are v8/v7s as bad as the internet says? I read good opinions about the v2/v1s on the other hand.

    • @MaxSoloMusic
      @MaxSoloMusic  5 лет назад

      I believe when Ibanez replaced V2/V1 with V8/V7 the intension was to improve something. The thing is, on my guitar, the yellow one you see in the video, pickups were replaced with DiMarzios by someone before I got it. I was looking for the original set of V2/V1 specifically for this video but with no success

      @@MaxSoloMusic hi!
      Thank you for the answer! That is a real pity. Now I know why the guitar feels smaller ^^

    • @MaxSoloMusic
      @MaxSoloMusic  5 лет назад

      I wanted to go with DiMarzios in the first place. So I was very happy to find out guitar already had them when I got it. The original V1/V2 seem to be really hard to find. I've even talked to Ibanez about it but they couldn't help

    • @noname-gt6vx
      @noname-gt6vx 5 лет назад

      @@MaxSoloMusic what would you expect, comparing v2/v1, dimarzio and v8/v7? I like your attitude as you don't complain about ibanez doing all worse as many people seem to. I also think, Ibanez tries to improve products, switching pickups (and they sure do some research to compensate cheaper materials etc.).

    • @MaxSoloMusic

      @@noname-gt6vx my impression, and you can here it in the video, is that V8/V7 sound scooped in a way, with more highs and lows, therefore more modern and aggressive than, at least mine, DiMarzios.
