This is exactly how I've been practicing this warm up since summer of 1981, always do this with my quard (4× picking each note) to keep up my chops, that's why I can play so fast & clean on an acoustic, great video Jen!!! Rock on & God Bless!!!

When you play the E major string skipping exercise, try playing the reverse pattern to: Pedal note on the beat, then repeat starting with the pedal note on the off-beat. This reverses the picking direction, making it a completely new exercise. You can also start the regular pattern with an upstroke instead of a downstroke etc.

Really enjoyable and - for all his faults - the guy spurred Jen on so that together they managed to cover a lot of ground and practical ideas in a pretty short time. I was just getting interested in Jen's classical 7dim warm up patterns when it ended! Oh well... - I followed it over the 2nd to the 5th strings and you can easily raise it a semi at a time in a kind of ascending (or descending) chromatic pattern. Good lesson and ideas guys.

This is a great video both you are fun and enjoyable to watch and listen too. I just recently bought elevated jam tracks and you are right they are very good. I bought discography part one thinking it be the one i saw in the video. I asked him and he said it was in part two, guess what he gave me part for free. Which is fantastic.
I never jam to rock music before, i just thought it was too hard or not worth it. Well i loved his tracks, i did have intuition where i should try some rock backing tracks. I have been playing acoustic guitar for years, i played along with songs i liked using a guy on the internet called munson. He is great at basic stuff and so advance stuff as well.
Any way i started to jam to the track from elevated and i quickly developed a strumming pattern. No distortion as it sounds terrible, of course i am using electric guitar to play with the tracks. The track started off at EM and it went from there, elevated has videos with his chord progressions so i used that as well which great.
Like i said i developed a strum pattern and was jamming a long great. I developed how to listen to chord changes (in fact i had learnt this before but never tried it with rock music), how many time times it was played ie EM x 3 in D D U DU DD or something like that. I learnt to do that with G and then because his chord change was fast i only did one Down stroke for A and D. The point is my timing was improving so was my development in listening and inventing new stuff to play.
Now i am trying to learn the muting with distortion on because when you play the full chord with all five strings its sounds horrible. I started to use different down strokes with mute on the strings . I musts of played for hours doing this it was great fun. i have to listen carefully i as i have a hearing problem.
    Thanks for the video

Most important lesson; you DON"T HAVE TO play fast.
Don't get yourself all worked up by the fact that some guys find themselves such a big man able to play super fast.
There are plenty of extremely good musicians out there only playing an handful of chords.

    • @johnmith3454
      @johnmith3454 4 года назад +1

While this is true, surely a bigger bag of tricks is better? Like playing fast, you don't need to bust out all your skills all the time, but knowing you can when you want to seems to be preferable to not being able to at all imho.
Either way, play what makes you happy, and if you can't play what makes you happy, practice until you can.

The title of this appears to be nothing more than click bait because it states that this is exercises with Jen but the vid looks more like he's decided that this video needed to go in a different direction and that his celebrity guest is in need of lessons from him! Seems very presumptuous to me and I could come up with another term for it!!She is a very patient lady!

Satriani? Isn't it closer to Eric Johnson played that way?
19:56 according to what Joe wrote in his book with tabs back in time that is the way he warms up besides playing chords with large painfull finger stretches, starts out slowly and then gradually speeds it up.
Not stroking them chords but picking each note until rapid speed.

I really prefer song parts, riffs or solos for excercising, especially for coordination. Good examples for me are the riff and the end of the solo of "Hand Of Blood" by Bullet for my Valentine or the beginning of "Crawling In The Dark" by Hoobastank. Do you have any more ideas?
