Police Expose Roadside Scammer's Fake Funeral Story

- On December 9, 2022 in Florida, deputies responded to reports of multiple subjects walking in traffic and soliciting money. The individuals were wearing hats and neon yellow vests. They were holding signs with a picture of a young female that said "FUNERAL 20-YEARS-OLD DIED - IN - AN (sic) - CAR ACCIDENT - PLEASE ANY - HELP - MARIA GOD BLESS." Upon arrival, deputies gathered the subjects who advised them that they were raising money for a family member who had died in a car accident three days earlier. However, this was soon proven to be a lie as the deputies searched the individuals' names and found a report from September 10, 2022 where the same individuals had been collecting money for a funeral using the same photo and story. This is body cam footage of the events that followed.

Amen. The last time I gave 6-7 bucks to a guy I saw him immediately go in a liquor store for a flask of cheap vodka with the cash.
I had my son cremated. I couldn't afford anything else. No funeral, no service. Pneumonia took him unexpectedly. I am disabled. Low income.
Begging for funds on the internet never crossed my mind. Begging on the street far beneath my dignity and his. He never would have forgiven me, nor I, myself. It cost me $595 in 2016 to cremate my son. He's still in the box fron the crematoriam. If you think I did not love, admire and revere my beautiful and brilliant son you are very, very mistaken.
This is disgusting, depraved behavior. Sickening. If they do have dead relatives, they shame them by using them this way. I wipe tears away as I type. I miss my son terribly. He was all I had.

Up to a few years ago, I would be the one giving money to people with signs that said, homeless, hungry, out of work and of course the obligatory God Bless you! I always suspected it was a scam, but hoped that if I helped even one person who legitimately needed it, my heart was in the right place. Now, not so much. I especially deplore the women on the street with babies asking for milk money. As other people commented, we are handing out money,shelters , schools for immigrants while our Vets are sleeping in cardboard boxes. It’s disgraceful . My heart is still in a good place but now I am much more cautious about the charities I support.
Standing in a parking lot, pretending to play a violin while blasting the music on a boom box, pretending not to speak English and asking for donations is another one of these scams.

yep, that's what we were getting here, in The Woodlands, Texas.... especially at Christmas time. It was organized. A van would go by and drop them off, there were about 4 different crews with fake violins, with someone holding a sympathy sign asking to help out during the holidays, blah blah blah. The Woodlands has dozens of small shopping areas scattered throughout it, they would hit them all. Went on for a couple of years. They finally kept getting kicked out of them and getting trespassed that they stopped. They moved north to Conroe, Tx and tried hitting the nicer shopping areas there, but Conroe is less tolerant, and they were told not to return. They did and they were arrested. Haven't seen them since, that was 2 years ago. Good riddance
They do the violin scam here in Germany during Christmas. A van actually drops several people off for various scams. I fell for it once. Lost €6

I was translating for a criminal in court that “didn’t speak English” as soon as the judge told him the fee for the interpreter was he yelled

That’s one rule I live by. I’ve seen the same three in my town for going on three years. My mother asked her once why she can’t get a job. Her response? “I don’t have an id” I literally work at a hotel, she gets enough money to stay a night or two, comes in here carrying beer, dominoes pizza, and is nodding off through the whole check in process. I’ve banned her from here. They make me sick. They don’t want to work. They want us to work and give them pity money. No I will not!

I'm always amazed at the able-bodied young men around my city begging for money rather than looking for a job. For anyone not young and capable of working, I keep a few bottles of water and cans of dog food in the car (for those begging with a dog) can't really get drug money for those items. I’ve been seeing people like this being dropped off in Houston suburbs lately. The backs of the signs are numbered so they have the same scam story on the same intersection. Sometimes it’s a funeral. Sometimes it’s a sick child. But the signs all look similar and it’s always a slightly different story.

One time there was a woman with about 8 kids at a gas station in Houston asking for money for gas and food. My step dad gave them money and filled their tank up. My family went to the mall. As we were shopping we saw the woman and her kids with a hundred shopping bags smh. My step dad is a pastor. He just shook his head and said God will deal with the mother.

I remember a young girl in San Diego who would always beg for food money at bus stops ... I offered to buy her a sandwich once instead and she cussed me out before hopping on the bus. Saw an article later and it looks like she died from a drug overdose.

Ehhhhh to be fair, Maria is a super common name in Romania. 🇷🇴 my Romanian friends grandmas are both named Maria. Seriously. I couldn’t believe it when I found that out. His dad and his uncle have the same name, two cousins with the same name. It happens.

I remember sitting in traffic and seeing an older White man with ripped clothes napping in the grass on the side of the road. Someone reached out of their window and handed him a $5 when they got close. He proceeded to pull out a FAT stack of bills and put the $5 in where he wanted. That was when I decided to stop helping the panhandlers. They have better cars than we do.

Yes. Ever since Romania joined the EU in 2007, Europe has been flooded with Roma people scamming and stealing wherever they go. It’s so engrained in their culture and lifestyle, I find it hard to see how they could change. As someone else said, they give Romanians a bad name even though they’re a completely different people.

I watched a guy where i live claim his was a disabled vet in a wheel chair telling everyone he was homeless and couldnt walk. After a person gave him mo ey and pulled off this guy got out of his chair folded it up and walked to a really nice new car and drove away. Its horrible.

They speak perfectly good English. I've seen her in my town in Maryland. They've learned that by thickening their accent and acting aloof, they can play into others' perceptions of innocence. I worked at Starbucks for 6 years near a busy intersection. There were regular scammers. One guy was apparently dropped off by his family and did a circuit of all food places telling people he was homeless. He wasn’t. My 1st SM banned him and others. When my next SM came in and they came back I went immediately and said they need to be banned because of solicitation. I told every SM about it.
Arrest her and call ICE agents.
Exactly I knew a girl who was on a visa to study out here in the United States and she got deported back to her country for running a red light but this lady could get scam people multiple times 🤦♂️
