Video shows arrest of woman soliciting money for fake funeral in Flagler County

- A woman with two children was arrested along Interstate 95 in Flagler County after soliciting money for a fake funeral over the weekend, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said Elena Firu, 37, was seen with two boys near Palm Coast Parkway and Boulder Rock Drive wearing neon yellow vests and holding signs and buckets.
The sheriff’s office said when deputies questioned Firu, she provided a fake name and later said that name belonged to her niece who died in a crash in France three days prior and that she was raising money for her funeral.
Video shows a deputy question Firu, then tell the suspect and her children she’s sorry their family is going through that tragedy, but she “can’t have (them) walking in traffic.”

I helped a family like this once, than I saw them a couple of months later doing the same thing but at a different location. That was a $10 dollar lesson I'll never forget.
Saw a couple a week later drinking at my local Buffalo Wild Wings...they were trying to speak Spanish to me when I asked about their situation just a bunch of scammers it is a mafia.

Currently out in California for work, the amount of homeless and panhandlers is absolutely off the charts. Most of it is drugs, you literally see them smoking their foil right on the sidewalk. I never give any of these people money. I distinctly remember walking into some restaurant and two homeless panhandlers approached me and asked for money, I told them I’d get them something on the way out. I bought them each a nice steak, peppers, rice, onions stir fry. I gave it to them, they didn’t say thank you, then asked if I had money. I told them to eff off, was able to grab one of the bags of food and homeboy started getting loud so I told him I’ll feed him his teeth instead if he takes one more step towards me. I was pissed. After that incident, I will never give them anything

Same thing happened my sophomore year in college. Stopped at a gas station along the interstate in Nashville. Had someone say they need cash to get to a funeral in NC. Gave him $20 for gas. A week or two later he came up to me at the same gas salvation with the same story. Needless to say, I didn't have the same reaction.

A few years ago there was a panhandler that stood at a busy intersection day after day. Something happened and police confronted him, which is rare because panhandling is legal where I live. Turns out he was a local lawyer and had $2k in cash in his pocket.

They were in various areas changing their stories at each location. They even told police their sole reason was to travel to panhandle

What is a lair?
I thought that it was something in her mind that’s far too shameful to tell even a female officer. That could be dozens of things, but she must not have gainful employment as she has adequate time to panhandle at two different intersections in their respective cities. It would be far easier to accept the handouts of organizations than it would be to panhandle in the intense heat, not to mention the dangers of traffic!
Ultimately, I think she’s here illegally, which is why she had no ID whatsoever to display when asked. The fact that she somehow got here, but is no longer allowed to be here is likely the problem. Many people will get one class of visa just to get into a country where they will knowingly “overstay.” You also can’t work on a tourist visa for example.
She and her kids could face deportation, and she simply can’t even work to afford a lawyer to help get her a proper “green card” because you need the appropriate visa in lieu of a social security number plus valid ID. I really can’t see her doing “busy work” under the table and for very low wages.
It’s a HUGE catch-22 and she’s scared shitless of having to go back home, that probably applies tenfold for her kids as she wants to keep them here in America.
Again, this is just brainstorming a theory or two based on the available information, but it could be something totally different, perhaps even laughable. On the other hand the reasoning could be secondary to something far more sinister. If I had to go with one guess, it would be using the wrong type of visa to gain entry into the country and then intentionally overstaying her welcome as a “tourist.” I think she figured out how to get to America and even stay, but didn’t think about how she could afford to survive without the valid documentation to work here legally.

There was a lady standing right on the edge of the road with two small children on Atlantic Boulevard in Jacksonville one Summer afternoon about seven or eight years ago. She had a sign with two different things on it, One on each side. One was just asking for money saying they were hungry, the other was asking for money for ballet. Just two steps and her babies would’ve been in the highway😢

Here in Toronto, there is a woman that does this with a sign of pictures of two children. It gives the impression that she is looking for her lost children. When she comes to the car window, she says, "I can't feed them and buy them clothes." Please help me." I've seen her doing this in multiple parts of the city. This scam is their full-time job.

If so that's just ridiculous the government gives low income people 760 per child under 6 years old and lowers the age ranges bit by bit, plus hundreds from welfare probably like 800 if she has 2 children and the Trillium and gst checks she would get monthly... there's also food banks and soup kitchens all over the city. There is no way for someone to go hungry in Toronto.

I'm Romanian and we as a whole dont condone this and don't like it . That's what alot of people think about us because of people like this . Alot of us are hardworking and humble. My parents worked to support 8 siblings and never once asked for a handout . They didn't have much but they had their pride and morals.

I agree. You shouldn't judge a whole population by what some people do. It's like saying all muslims are terrorists which quite obviously they are not. The Roma gypsy community unfortunately this is a part of their so called "culture" though again I don't know if all of them do it. If everyone stopped giving and only just donated through official means it would stop , but they prey on people's compassion. Same with some junkies. I don't give money. Sometimes I give food and a warm blanket and often they throwthe food away, which tells me they were never hungry but wanted money for drugs.

But these lazy people and found that they can beg while being on every public assistance program out there while begging and getting hundreds if dollars. We have a lady that sits up in our neighbourhood and once every couple of months she shows up begging in a parking lot of a grocery store claiming that she has 3 teen boys to feed. We have all offered her work everything. Not one phone call back if she was willing to work..... She just begs in a rich neighborhood getting enough money in a few hours of begging then back out once she is out of money again. All of us have figured her out and we actually call her out now saying stop begging around here. We have her photo all over Facebook community groups etc. This makes me sick. Not all Romanian people are like this. This needs to addressed! My inlaws were very hard workers. This needs to stop. You need help then go work for a living. Good for this police officer. This woman should be ashamed for lying begging for money and getting called out for it in front of her children!

It's terrible and she's got her kids out there too. Last time I was at Walmart, trying to get out of my car and woman with her son look to be about 12 years old, approached me. She held up a sign, needing money. I said no. When I was done shopping she approached me again.

This is sad. The cop offered help so many times and she refused by continuing with her story. Seeing her face like she was stuck and confused was hard to watch since everyone knew she was lying. Which got her no where. Honesty can get you far.
We have a couple who do this in our area. They drag their small children out in the heat and cold and beg for money. They have been there for 2-3 years. The mom has been pregnant twice. Then brings the new baby. They then get in a newer SUV and drive to a new spot. I feel horrible for the kids. The husband should get a real job and take care of his family like a real man.

Hats off to this officer who not only did her job but was also compassionate. My mom legally immigrated to this country at 21. She worked very hard and never lived off the government, panhandled or lied. Within a year she was also fluent in English.

I saw a woman like this come out of a store and get in a van with 2 other ladies and kids and she was pulling snacks out of her dress (chest) and passing the snacks to the kids. She had stolen them obviously..the kids learn this.
People like this are why I rarely give money to panhandlers anymore. (And I rarely carry cash now anyway.)
Makes me sad, because if I can help, I want to. I gave $20 to a sweet elderly black lady at a gas station one time. She was just asking for change. She was so happy, she teared up and asked to hug me. Best hug ever! That’s worth so much more that the $20 to me!

It's a centuries old culture. I wound up in a gypsy camp in Greece 1973. I happened to be sleeping in an orchard, not knowing their camp was nearby. I have interesting photos. They were chill, could see I had less than them.

You can absolutely tell the difference. Someone that’s filthy, carrying a tattered blanket or hunched over, hasn’t shaved, in a wheelchair, etc.
Compared to standing on a street corner with his buddies on adjacent corners, if someone is holding up a sign, holding out a jar or bucket, clothes look decent, are decently groomed and cleaned. That isn’t a homeless person.
I bought my home 8 years ago. It’s near a large intersection. I’ve seen the same man with the same sign on the same corner for the whole 8 years. There’s a McDonald’s about a tenth of a mile away, he could have gotten a job during those 8 years.
Want to get a job at McDonald's or anywhere else when you can sit and beg and receive more standing on the street corner with a fake facade. It's actually pretty sickening.

I saw a man for over 2 years begging for motel money. I saw him in several different spots. I asked him how managed to get all over town without any money.
