Kyle, useful info as always. Suggestion. How about a range test in your Tesla (100% SOC to 0%) at three tire pressures (say 45, 40 and 35 lbs) to see just how tire pressure affect range?
Hello. You've said the ID4 will keep its battery temperature constant regardless of outside temperature. Does it mean it has battery thermal management system?
The precondition is setting the temperature of the battery or cabin. For example, if a Tesla knows you are on route to a charger it preps the temperature of the battery pack for optimum charge rate.
I totally see your point - VW USA still pays Electrify America for the contract just as any other Automaker does. But in terms of VW global, it's all from one department to another.

I have one on order (aws pro-s). Since ID4 allows you to free DC charge through Electrify America, I expect a lot of owners to use it exclusively for the first three years. What kind of effect do you think this might have on battery health?
Have owned EVs since 2011. Charging out is a hassle, no way the time cost is worth a few bucks savings a month vs home charging at $0.099 a kw. If its needed for whatever its nice.
Hi Kyle thanks for the work but your comment is highly confusing to me. you claim battery is maintained at 77F=25C. at the same time in the article it is claimed that temperature greatly affects charging power. i am trying to figure out why i am only charging at 40kW at 8C and 35% SOC (ID.4 Pro S) - VWoA says it is all they it should be. bummer - on none of the charging curves is an actual temperature indicated. how would this temperature dependence affect Norwegian people - do they ever get 77F. to me that is very misleading advertisement (ok i am in CA). at 14C outside temperature it takes me like 50min from 30-80%
Could you retest the ID.4 with a range test comparing the D and B modes. There seems to be some discussions online that the D mode has better efficiency than the B mode.
Looks like parking lot owners will have to educate their snow plow contractors to clear snow from EV charging spots....and also be sure not to pile it up making chargers inaccessible.
If there were a cost involved as you said @0.31 a Kilowatt hour. What would real world cost be without free charging?? Example I need is you pull into an EA, the three years free is up. Charging quickly from 0 % to 50% (as you recommend, and I agree) would cost how much?
I want to see how it recharges, rate wise, in July in Baker, CA on my way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Probably a LOT slower. Summer time is when I take most of my longer road trips, not Fall, Winter or Spring time temperatures. Keep it real.
Great review. You may have answered this question in the past, but why do most all charging stations remain uncovered? Snow and cold wouldn't bother me too much, but if its pouring down and I need to charge, it sure would be nice to be out of the elements. With your reviews, and still waiting for the Ioniq 5, you have helped me pare down to 3 cars. Mach e (if they can get the charging station issues resolved, ID4, and Ioniq 5. Yup, the costs to cover charging stations is just not cost effective for the owners. It's already not that profitable delivering all that fast power at reasonable prices. Gas stations are a different animal. They are combined with shops and when pumping gas you're supposed to stand by the pump therefore needing coverage. Also, the sprinkler system is overhead in case of fire at a gas station. With charging, you either sit in car or go somewhere nearby.
@@Josh-179 Thanks. I didn't know about the sprinkler system. I would think with the growing number of charging stations that this would also lead to more shops too. Maybe something similar to how the gas stations are set up along the autobahn in Germany - restaurant, groceries, etc.
@@jamoss55 , yeah, I think in the coming years when EV's are far more the norm, charging areas will become more elaborate and incorporate more and more conveniences. There just has to be a way for the owners to make the money back.
I’m surprised that standard fueling stations haven’t added EV ‘pumps’ - especially the stations that have lots of snacks and restaurants. - maybe there are some, just haven’t seen any.
I will buy mine ijn 2022. waiting for the AWD...Tesla are nice but they have QC issues and the ride is much better in the VW. Go test drive one and you will see.
Yep, EA is a wholly owned subsidiary of VW. So if VW "paid" for this they would be paying themselves, essentially. Which wouldn't be uncommon: I'm sure there's a payment on the books for accounting purposes but the money isn't leaving the VW family of companies so it's a bit silly to talk about "How much VW had to pay EA" for this ability.
Kyle, thank you for a very informative video! Volkswagen and others have mentioned that an ID.4 owner should charge the vehicle to only about 80% most of the time (only charge to 100% every once in a while). Let's say I have a 40-amp level 2 charger in my garage that I will use to charge the vehicle overnight when necessary. Before I go to bed, is there a way to instruct either the vehicle or the charger to automatically stop charging once the charge has reached 80%, or will it charge all the way to 100% unless I manually stop it?
Why the 100% corresponds to 82 kWh, while the the net battery pack is 77 kWh? VW told me that the so called buffer portion of the battery pack is not usable, nor chargeable I think.
OK, just did a full break down of you charging the Mach E to 100% vs you charging the VW ID4 to 100% and I have to say it seems like you are being harsh on the Mach E and giddy with delight about the ID 4. The ID4 reached 80% (0.8 * 77 kWh = 61.6 kWh) in 40 min... the Mach E reached 70% (0.7 * 88 kWh = 61.6 kWh) in 42 min.... You are normally very objective and analytical, but in this case you crap all over the Mustang and glow with pride about the ID4. I get it that above 80% the Mach E is a joke, but below that it is as good as the ID4. I rely on you for spot on analysis when looking to chose my next EV (charging curve is important to me after living for several years with a 2017 Bolt EV) Also, Alex on Auto's seems to get a much higher charging power for much longer on his Mach E, his test was 10% to 80% in warm weather... do you think this difference was due to plugging in a 10%, weather conditions, or both? Love the channel, love your content. :)
I guess it depends where you live and the build out of the charging network for your travel route. I'd want to charge to 90-100 if I am travelling to reduce stoppage time and get to where I am going. Kyle suggests charging halfway and them hoping to the next charger. I dunno about that because you'd be stopping every 1.5 hrs. Makes for a long and tedious trip.
One common complaint about the ID.4 is that it should start charging as soon as you plug in, automatically the way Teslas do when you charge: Plug in and you're done. Since VW was the one who basically created Electrify America you'd think they would make it as easy as humanly possible for their own cars to charge. I'm sure this will be fixed in the near future.
Mach-E takes 27 mins to get to 50% and 49 mins to 80%. ID4 takes 20 mins to 50% and 50 mins to 90%. Mach-E RWD ER 80% rated range = 240mi ID4 First Edition 90% rated range = 225mi
I would like to see with the heater on how long it takes. If I was to buy one and tell my family "we will only use the heated seats for the next hour while we charge" there would be a big problem!

Have owned EVs since 2011. Charging out is a hassle, no way the time cost is worth a few bucks savings a month vs home charging at $0.099 a kw. If its needed for whatever its nice.
Any recommendations for LEVEL 2 chargers for VW id4 2023 Pro S models?
Eagerly waiting for my 2023 model
Hi Kyle thanks for the work but your comment is highly confusing to me. you claim battery is maintained at 77F=25C. at the same time in the article it is claimed that temperature greatly affects charging power.
i am trying to figure out why i am only charging at 40kW at 8C and 35% SOC (ID.4 Pro S) - VWoA says it is all they it should be. bummer - on none of the charging curves is an actual temperature indicated. how would this temperature dependence affect Norwegian people - do they ever get 77F. to me that is very misleading advertisement (ok i am in CA). at 14C outside temperature it takes me like 50min from 30-80%
Hi Kyle. Can you put this charging curve and your Model 3 charging curve into the same spreadsheet/graph?
It’ll be on InsideEVs.com
This Volkswagen Looks Luxurious
12 dollars
@@jaz4280 thanks! So charging close zero to approximately 90% is around $20 or so?
I want to see how it recharges, rate wise, in July in Baker, CA on my way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Probably a LOT slower. Summer time is when I take most of my longer road trips, not Fall, Winter or Spring time temperatures. Keep it real.
If you have to pay then .32 cents / kw hr x 80 kw hrs = $25? For 200 miles of range?
Great review. You may have answered this question in the past, but why do most all charging stations remain uncovered? Snow and cold wouldn't bother me too much, but if its pouring down and I need to charge, it sure would be nice to be out of the elements. With your reviews, and still waiting for the Ioniq 5, you have helped me pare down to 3 cars. Mach e (if they can get the charging station issues resolved, ID4, and Ioniq 5. I appreciate the time and effort.
Mostly cost!
I thought VW owned or at least had a large interest in EA. That might be why they can afford to give the unlimited charging.
Electrify America is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group
@@guglielmomalizia926 that’s what I thought. So this makes total sense for them to offer free charging.
Every registered ID.4 in the US gets 3 years unlimited charging (regardless of who owns it).
You can set a charge limit on the console
Dis they fix the bug for showing you where the American chargers are?
What is all the kilowatt numbers means? Can you explain it in plain English?
you should build a lego mindstorm rig or a raspberry pi with an actuator to press that button on the EA charger.
Had to pull out the famous stick for this test and sit in the trunk as my feet were frozen ice blocks! Haha
@@OutofSpecReviews haha, could tell from the parking situation. thanks for your dedication 🙌
I'd like to see what the range loss will be when towing if you could do a video on that.
Tbh the ID.4 does not look bad at all and VW SUVs do not look bad at all
Hi there. Would you happen to know If traveling in Canada, would the charging be free?
Good question. I am Canadian and would be asking that too but in reverse. Can I use Electrify America?
Why are you constantly switching screens on the charger?
Makes for a long and tedious trip.
it seems that the best charging speed is when battery is at room temperatures, not too cold and not too hot also, right?
@@rpgfightin4ever Just like the porridge of Goldilocks fame.
Does it , fast charger bed for battery life ?
I think it is..
Also, the screen at EA hasn’t shown “car asking for” all winter.
Mach-E takes 27 mins to get to 50% and 49 mins to 80%. ID4 takes 20 mins to 50% and 50 mins to 90%.
Mach-E RWD ER 80% rated range = 240mi
ID4 First Edition 90% rated range = 225mi
Dont fall for the rated range. Real world range from both are quite different...
@@ycaglaya false. Mach-E and ID4 have shown to be accurate and even pessimistic with their EPA ranges.
@@ycaglaya I test drove the ID4 yesterday. It was at 90% and the estimated range was 267 miles. It's always going to vary.
I would like to see with the heater on how long it takes. If I was to buy one and tell my family "we will only use the heated seats for the next hour while we charge" there would be a big problem!
Won’t really be a measurable difference
Ground clearance for the AWD? stupid detail I know, but it matters to me here in CO.
Saw that there was some nice snow on the ground, how does the RWD ID4 do in the snow?
Carry tire chains

Bjorn uses heater to take cars to zero. That way at zero, but already at charger, so you don't have danger of having to push the car.
I did the same thing here
3 years free charging in a country as big as the states or Canada is pretty nuts
How many miles per hour does it get in a standard 120v outlet?
About 3
Can you charge these at Charge Point?
When will the ID.4 have "Plug and Charge"? For many that will be more important than the charging speed vs Mach-e.
Last I heard was a software update sometime this year.
What’s plug-and-charge?
Picking up mine in 2 weeks🤩🤩
So how is it?
@@rzu7120 I love it! I’ve had it more a couple months and it’s amazing! The only down side is I get a lot of people coming up to my car & touching it
@@stephanywelsh674 Maybe they want to see if it shocks them! Congratulations on the car.
FREE is nice! Thanks.
Thanks man
As with phones, letting the battery drain that low is not recommended. Some even charging more than 80-90% isn't recommended for battery longevity.
What was the temperature of the battery pack if you know?
He said the car maintains the battery at 77 degrees F.
Charging curve is still my concern in the iD4 - and just a note this reviewer needs to do more research VW owns a majority stake in EA because they were mandated too after the diesel scandal -
