Hi Pete, thanks for the informative video. I ended up getting the monitor -- I have a very similar setup to yours, my question is: Does the heavy duty monitor arm by Secretlab support the desk riser for the magnus pro? According to them it's not supported but I see you're using it without a problem. Has it held up well? Thanks!
Found that if you want to use console at 120hz you need to use the Picture in Picture mode using the back button at 75% : 25%. Does have a black bar on the 25% but you get 4K at 120hz. Can do this via HDMI then use PC or Mac on the 25% side.
Hey Pete, with the drivers and software installed on the Mac OSX, can you control the volume and brightness from a Mac keyboard? how come no reviewer ever covers this part of the experience
Thanks for great review. I just have a general question for these ultra wide monitors which none of the review videos seem to mention. What happens if you share your screen during a Microsoft Teams call? Does it compress the 21:9 ratio to a 16:9 ratio or it is managed cleverly?
I use the 38" version of this monitor for work. MS Teams will deliver the full resolution of whatever you share. On the recipient end, Teams will scale down and letterbox or pillarbox the image if the aspect ratio doesn't match what you are sending. I find that most other users are on smaller 1080p laptop or desktop monitors and if I share my whole screen, they get way more pixels than could possibly resolve. Therefore, I only ever share single application windows, which I size approximately to 1920x1080, since that's likely the target resolution of the rest of the call participants.
If you don’t care about 120hz than consider getting previous model 4021 for cheaper on eBay. Same size, resolution, slightly less power delivery at 90W and 60hz
I've been waiting for this video from you. Thank you very much for your work. Very interesting about your decision to stick with your beloved 57" Samsung. After checking this one out,
I know I know, it took a long time! haha. Next time I'll be better :) Yes, it's a tough choice - but I just think the super wide resolution is more useful to me, who likes to have about 50 apps open at once. I have workarounds for the connectivity issue, and the blooming / haloing isn't an issue once it's booted into the OS.
@@PeteMatheson I recently bought the 57" Samsung. A few days in one thing I'm not loving about it is the vertical color shift. I find the black background in apps like VsCode shifting from black to grey. I just came off a 34" IPS ultrawide (1440p tall which was not enough for me). I'm wondering if I should have bought this Dell instead since it's IPS (vs the Samsung which is VA). My guess is the IPS is why you feel that text is better on the Dell. But according to RTINGS the vertical colorshift isn't _that_ much worse on the Samsung 57" than this Dell. Have you noticed a difference there? Particularly in dark theme apps?
Great review. I just purchased the Mac Studio M2 Ultra and trying to find just the right monitor. I do mostly video and photography editing. I've been looking at this Dell along with the LG 40-WP95C. Any thoughts? Thank you!!
How do you connect your wireless keyboard and mouse to the monitor? Which USB port to use for the wireless receiver? And how to set up in the menu? I have yet to find anyone that explains this on a RUclips video. I hear how to connect by USB cable but never by wireless. Thanks very much for the video and any help you can provide.
Of course! Yep if you connect the dongle to one of the ports in the back of the monitor, and then check through the menu options to make sure it's connected the USB Ports to your Laptop / PC (choose the input, DP / HDMI etc) and then it should all just work.
hvnt pay attention on ultrawide monitor in a while and finally its here, 4k ultra wide with high refresh rate this one is certainly too big for me and the connectivity is surly a beast which i cant fully make use of, but i surely would love to see more options like this
Thank you for the review. Based on your experience, which widescreen monitor would you recommend for work tasks like Excel? My focus to have 2 files on the same screen. I’m not looking for features geared toward gaming or movies. thanks again !
Pete thanks for your reviews, very very helpful indeed, I watch both your 57inch and now this 40inch, I would like to know when u mean sharp font on Dell, mean clarity? Because I was planning to get 57, meanwhile have you faced any issues with 57 recently? The Samsung website has way number of negative comments about possible failure, kid of worried, my works involves productivity which involves accessing multiple remote machines and beaming my laptop, along with Linux machine on side, also I need to evaluate lot of pdf documents
Thanks for the review, Pete! Received it recently and thinking about keeping it. I wonder, what scaling option do you use in Mac OS ? The native one appears to be quite usable, and I noticed all other scaling options give a text slight "hallowing", especially visible when white text is displayed on the dark background (probably due lack of font-smoothing on mac os). This Dell also integrates with Mac OS quite well: night shift works, didn't notice any flickering and it wakes up fast. I had been using dual Studio displays, but 27 inch is just way too limiting (+18ms response makes it feel like a 30hz display instead of 60hz). Then sold one of the Studio Displays and bought The Pro Display XDR (I know, "a bit" of an overkill for coding). The XDR is the best monitor I've ever had, but for that price I'd expect it to last a decade and I'm not sure it will. The repair-cost is absolutely eye-watering too if the XDR breaks a few years later. So, now thinking about returning the XDR and selling the remaining Studio Display.
Size wise, it feels very familiar. But the resolution is WAY better on the Dell - so if it’s mainly for productivity then this is the easy winner. Particularly on a Mac. The LG is great, OLED is amazing, but the resolution and PPI is what lets it down.
what i need is for anyone, Samsung included, to release a 57" OLED, i have a Monoprice 49", and need more vertical, and i'll take some more horizontal, and why not a little more
At 11:14 you say that you are able to reach full native resolution at 120 Hz on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro. Is that actually correct? I red on reddit multiple times that this would not work and you would need at least an M2 MacBook to reach the 120 Hz. Could you check this as this hold me back until now.
@@nikolajpetrov8262 I purchased this monitor and can confirm only 60hz with my M1 Max. In addition, thunderbolt stopped working after a day. (Seems to be a common issue). Opened a support case with dell and awaiting my replacement. Currently running HDMI on my Mac at 30hz. Very disappointing. Hopefully the replacement works. Some “fix” the issue by using an official Apple thunderbolt 4 cable (an $80 expense)
I bought this monitor because I saw Pete saying that MacBook m1 can work with this monitor at 120hz. I checked few cables but it does not work at 120hz. I am going to check Cable Matters usb-c to hdmi 2.1 adapter and if this way will not work then statement from this video is not true.
Not working for me on a MacBook Air M3. Big disappointment! Even the native resolution is unusable due to the lack of scaling. Everything becomes to tiny to read.
I think Pete is wrong. Search "macbook pro 14 m1 specs" then first result go to "Display Support" section. First result from Apple, you will notice that it does support max 6K@60Hz. Then same search for "macbook pro 14 m2 specs". You will notice that it does support 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz. So, the bandwidth of the M2 Pro does include 6K@120Hz. Why? Because the stream of 8K@60Hz = 6K@120Hz = 4K@240Hz and it is higher than this Dell monitor which is exactly 4.62K@120Hz (5K is the marketing name). For memory, when you double the K, you double the width and the height. So, the area, the pixel quantity is squared (quadrupled) from 4K to 8K but doubled from 4K to 6K (6K has the same height as 4K, but double width) *So 120Hz is OK for M2 Pro/Max and not for M1 Pro/Max.*
How many buttons do you have to press to switch the input from PC to MAC or vice versa? I have an LG and changing input ist like 5 button presses and menu actions...
Dear Pete, thank you very much for the Review! I like to buy this monitor. But I'm a lil bit worrying about my laptop. I use an ThinkPad X1 carbone (gen9) with Intel Iris and thunderbolt 4. Does it will be able to display the 5k pixels with 120 Hz?
What's the best way to get the 120hz refresh rate. Online perspectives are saying the supplied cables don't have the capabilities etc. Right now I'm capped at 60Hz.

Hey Pete, Have you looked at or reviewed the Samsung ViewFinity S9? I'm curious to see how you think it stacks up as a good all rounder against the bigger screens?
You said that productivity with MacOS is no problem *if* you install the Dell Display Driver. Could you elaborate why that is, why the drivers are required? (plug-and-play is important in a flexible desk environment)
If you consider the fact that it has everything a docking station offers built in, and most docking stations are a few hundred dollars, the monitor gets significantly cheaper. Of course you are locked in to that monitor though
Hi! Do you confirm that M1 Pro can run full resolution at 120hz? I've seen a bunch of subreddit talking about how it's not natively working but you can create and use EDID profile to go near 120hz, thanks for the review, I'm looking at this monitor for a couple of months now, but I'm unsure how well it will play with my 16" M1 Pro!
Same questions from me. I'm running a 14" M1pro and have also seen elsewhere that the M1 does not support that refresh rate unless you do some wizardry with an specific adapter that also requires you FLASH it with a new firmware update. So will appreciate to know if you are getting full resolution and 120hz refresh rate with just a regular cable?
This seems like a perfect solution for my problem: Desktop + work laptop need to work with 3 screens. Question: Can this beauty of a monitor send signal to 2 more monitors? And if yes - how? What is the cable setup I would need to use?
Potentially! You can use the Thunderbolt downstream port to hook up another monitor via thunderbolt - or potentially use a thunderbolt to HDMI/DP adapter. But I suspect this would also only work when you hook up your laptop / PC via Thunderbolt too. Unfortunately I don't have enough here to test for you, but in theory it should and could work with the right combination of supported devices!
I was heavily considering the G9 Neo, but now I'm unsure. The color accuracy, KVM, and USB-C for the Mac are drawing me in more with this one. 120Hz is fine; I just wish it had more curve. I will still get this one, though.
It's a really tough choice - check the latest video I just posted on the G9 as well - but yeah, definitely comes down to personal preference as to which one!

I am on the verge of purchasing the monitor AND the arm using your link in the next 2 weeks, so I extremely appreciate any advice and guidance on the above. Thank you very much kind sir.
Hello! It's similar to other monitors where it takes a second or two to switch as it changes the video source and moves over the USB devices etc I wouldn't say it's lengthy by any stretch, but it's also not instant. Sorry if that doesn't help - but hopefully it does!? lol
I am planning to purchase a secret lab Desk Magnus Pro. I just want to purchase ( 2) 40 Dell monitors - will it fit on the Magnus Desk - I also have a laptop from work to use. Any advise would be helpful ! Thank you!
Great combination! I would say yes, but only if you don’t mount them to the shelf. With that said, you may be able to fit 2 side by side and use the shelf, but it could be pushing the weight limits a little.
I am looking for a monitor, and I am looking at Dell, because my dad gets discounts there from work, right now, it is between this, and their Alienware 4K QD-OLED (which I would get 2 of if I decide to get the Alienware monitor), I just wish Dell would have make an ultra wide version of their Alienware QD-OLED 4K monitor, that would make my monitor making decision so much easier.
I’ve been eying this monitor for a long time but in another review it was mentioned it did not work at 120hz full resolution on a MBP M1 Pro. Are you 100% sure it does? It would basically seal the deal for me. 11:36
Be careful with the App Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM) from Dell for macOS to use it for the settings for Dells. It causes for some machine heavy memory leaks and east up all the memory. Besides that, great display. :) To feed 120hz in 5k you will need a beefy GPU ;) or have to use DLSS/FSR.
Could you make a comment on that dell how it fares with KVM setup? I'm really interested in this bit - like, a scenario where a contractor laptop is plugged in alongside daily-Desktop PC. Does it work well for you? This is something I feel missing in Samsung
I find it difficult finding a monitor that I can do productivity and gaming on. Any recommendations? I think at the end here, you said you would recommend something else for both.
If you''re a serious gamer then I'd suggest having one monitor for productivity (like the Dell 40) and go for a separate monitor for gaming. If you're a casual gamer though, the Dell will do just fine on its own :)

Probably a niche question but how limited are the custom layout options using Dell Display Manager? Would it be possible to create a centered FHD or QHD window to run games in or does the entire display need to be used? Gaming is not a priority but it would still be cool to run games at both a reasonable frame rate and PPI
HI! I'm having a hard time figuring out what monitor(s) to get. I've been mostly thinking about having 2 monitors, 27-32", and 4k minimum. I will never be gaming, it's purely productivity. I'm in real estate and have tons of windows open at a time, and a few different programs running simultaneously. I will also be doing video editing for properties, nothing crazy intensive. My main concern is the scaling and PPI when using a Mac. I'm getting a M4 Max MBP once it's released because my current MBP is ~10yrs old. I was originally thinking about getting two ASD or LG Ultrafines but after doing more research I want something that has at least 120hz. I've seen comparisons of using an external 60hz monitor with M3 MBP's and don't like how it's not smooth compared to the native MBP screen. I've seen forum posts with guys using between 2 to 3 LG OLED monitors; running at 120hz with no issues, but I'm worried about burn-in since I always have a lot of documents up at all times. Seeing this review, I'm now leaning towards the G9. I understand the scaling might not be exact but it seems to be close enough, and at 120hz which is enough for me, also the amount of screen real estate. I'm currently using a Samsung CJ791 34" and everything seems fine to me scaling wise, so having a screening nearly 2x the size would be nice. The other option I'm looking at, again after seeing your review, is the Dell 40" UltraSharp, just wish it was a bit wider. If I do go with the Dell, I was thinking of getting a smaller 4k screen on the side vertically for scrolling through docs. Sorry for the tl;dr comment but any insight would be appreciated. I originally wrote this for the G9 review you made but I saw that this review is newer, so the chance of you replying would be higher on this review.... lol THANK YOU!!!!!
I have 3x 27 inch monitors with 60 Hz each and would like to switch to 1 monitor of a similar size and at least 120 Hz. I use a MacBook Pro and would like to have 5k on the monitor as well. The Pro Display XDR is too small for me and doesn't have at least 120 Hz. I'm afraid that the Dell is also too small and has too low a pixel density. Are there any other alternatives in the meantime?

Hi mate! Thanks for the review! I've had this monitor for about a month now and overall, I love it. However, I’m encountering an issue where videos, especially in full-screen mode, seem choppy, as if they’re playing at 25fps or lower. I film all my videos at 60fps for my channel, and while I don’t have this issue on other screens, it’s quite noticeable here. The same thing happens when playing videos on RUclips or VLC. Have you experienced anything similar or have any suggestions on what might be causing this? It's a bit frustrating because it makes it hard to tell if my videos are smooth during editing. Any advice would be appreciated!🙌
Very odd! And no, nothing like that so far. What are you running the screen at for resolution and refresh rate? And have you tried swapping to a different video source? (HDMI / DP etc)
Hi, I have the same monitor. I am having issues using an external powered USB hub connected to it when I use the monitor with my MacBook Pro M2 via Thunderbolt 4. None of the items connected to the hub work (tried different hubs). On Windows, instead, with the same Hub configuration (DisplayPort + upstream usb-c) everything works fine. Have you experienced the same kind of issues?
How many "devices" can you connect and switch between with the Kvm? I have a setup with PC (gaming) one macbook pro (m1 max) and one macbook air(m2) where I would like to switch keyboard, mouse, mic, monitor and ethernet, but I couldn't find anything in the manual if this is possible
What about videos? Can I use this monitor to play standard 4k videos on it? They typically have black bars on top and bottom, and if I am not wrong, the 5k display of the Dell would be perfect, when stretching the video to 5120 horizontal and 2160p vertical size. Is it possible, or do I have to crop videos first, and then play them using vlc or a similar program?

Trying to cover all bases in all my reviews! Thank you :)
Love how you take the temperature of the monitors.

Thanks!
Solid review. What's the laptop stand you are using in this video?
Just wanted to drop by and say what a fantastic job on the thumbnail my dude!
But the scaling on the Mac is much better compared to the 57 samsung. You can use ~3840x1600 with an M2 Pro or higher on this Dell.
Make this Oled and higher curve it would be perfect. Love the Ethernet port
I've been waiting for this video from you. Thank you very much for your work. Very interesting about your decision to stick with your beloved 57" Samsung. After checking this one out,
I know I know, it took a long time! haha. Next time I'll be better :)
Yes, it's a tough choice - but I just think the super wide resolution is more useful to me, who likes to have about 50 apps open at once.

How do you connect your wireless keyboard and mouse to the monitor? Which USB port to use for the wireless receiver? And how to set up in the menu? I have yet to find anyone that explains this on a RUclips video. I hear how to connect by USB cable but never by wireless. Thanks very much for the video and any help you can provide.
Of course! Yep if you connect the dongle to one of the ports in the back of the monitor, and then check through the menu options to make sure it's connected the USB Ports to your Laptop / PC (choose the input, DP / HDMI etc) and then it should all just work.

@@PeteMatheson Wow, I did not know this. I might have to pick up one of those Logitech receiver things that I misplaced.
Current 57" Neo G9 panel type is VA not IPS. This difference helps the Dell's pixels look better at the same PPi. 8:45

I like the proportion of Dell 40. But I think the image quality is lacking for the price.. Especially the HDR capacity.

Is it possible to connect a soundbar directly to to that monitor via the hdmi 2.1? Great video BTW!
Great video thanks - how does it compare to the LG 45 inch?
Do not use HDMI, I think it might be able to over DP or Al-DP over USB-C
My only concern is the black level? Is it on level with mini led or Oled?

You said that productivity with MacOS is no problem *if* you install the Dell Display Driver. Could you elaborate why that is, why the drivers are required? (plug-and-play is important in a flexible desk environment)
If you consider the fact that it has everything a docking station offers built in, and most docking stations are a few hundred dollars, the monitor gets significantly cheaper. Of course you are locked in to that monitor though
I was really wanting this monitor for productivity but I heard the motion handling is bad if you also want to use it for gaming on the side. True?

Same questions from me. I'm running a 14" M1pro and have also seen elsewhere that the M1 does not support that refresh rate unless you do some wizardry with an specific adapter that also requires you FLASH it with a new firmware update.

I would say yes, but only if you don’t mount them to the shelf.
With that said, you may be able to fit 2 side by side and use the shelf, but it could be pushing the weight limits a little.
It’s not 140 PPI, it’s 160+ PPI like LG’s 5k2k display.

Will four monitors of these work if they are connected to your computer?

I originally wrote this for the G9 review you made but I saw that this review is newer, so the chance of you replying would be higher on this review.... lol
THANK YOU!!!!!
What are the specs (CPU, generation, GPU, RAM, SSD, etc., etc.) of the desktop gaming computer (at time 12:59 in the video)?
I saw in the menu that you can set it to adobeRGB color space. You didn’t select it. As a photographer I’m interested to know what percentage of the AdobeRGB color space it covers. I do not seem to be able to find that in the specs online.

Well 1 second / 120 is 8.333milliseconds so it can react faster than it refreshes the picture with 5 and 8 ms.
Is it possible to connect two laptops (MacBook Pro and Dell Latitude) via thunderbolt? Or is it one thunderbolt and then HDMI/DP connection for the other? Would like to be able to have minimal cables with both machines getting powered through thunderbolt if possible.

Does AMD USB 4 work with the built in KVM or does it require Intel?
Since i got my hands on the previous gen of this panel from Lenovo, flat monitors have been ruined for me lol.
