    I wish I could've joined live: The respawn mechanic adds a lot to the forward pushing. You can safely go back to the previous save point to heal up and upgrade but you have to deal with everything again, or you can push forward and hope to find a save point before you perish. Also it lets you farm a bit if you are severely underlevelled or practice if unprepared. Given the metroidvania world building in most soulslikes, it gives meaning to already visited areas (they're not just barren) and gives a sense of progression. Going back to early areas with upgraded gear and seeing how much easier they are. I wouldn't say it's integral to the soulslike genre but you'd have to have multiple un-elegant systems replacing one elegant one to solve a lot of those "problems."
