How do you make a game that's chaotic AND predictable?
Просмотров 9132 месяца назад
What do Lethal Company, Skyrim, Helldivers 2 all have in common? They are designed to be broken. But what does that even mean, and why the heck would anyone deliberately design something to be broken? Well its because this method of design can result in chaotic emergence, and that can lead to some, shall we call it, unique gameplay. By intentionally designing their games to have this chaotic em...

    The only AAA devs that I play their games are Rockstar, CAPCOM and Remedy but honestly other than that I've basically lost all interest in AAA games considering of their lack of creativity leading to them to blend together. At least with Rockstar, CAPCOM and Remedy try to find ways to innovate and overall, just make games that are fun and memorable but since other AAA companies don't seem to be taking any risks anytime soon, we'll always have Indie devs consistently providing certified bangers like Who's Lila, Trepang2 and My Friend Pedro.

    I've never been into AAA games. I did buy Control a few years ago when it was on sale and largely enjoyed it (though the combat was boring), and I bought a few Fromsoft games if those count, but otherwise indie games have appealed to me more the whole time I've been into PC gaming. I always laugh at these PC builder bros who tell you what GPU you absolutely need or else your games will look *terrible*. Even if I wanted to play AAA games, I could use DLSS and/or FSR and probably be fine on medium settings (and if not, well then there's always low settings, and if that's not enough, there's always 720p...). Meanwhile the games I actually do play look and run great at 4K on my GPU that is supposedly barely a 1080p card lol.

    More accurate title would be "It is time to stop playing AAA games from companies like Activision". Because I am absolutely going to keep playing actually good AAA games. For example this year, why should I not play amazing looking Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, or STALKER 2, or Black Myth Wukong, or Indiana Jones or Avowed? Indie games can be nice, but they offer different kind of experience.

    Mate, look, i`m 39 and playing games since i was 6. I can understand exhaustion with constant pressure on oneself, to even look at another iteration of game that`s functionality is closed in investment`s loop. Devs sqeezed harder and harder every year to selling the same shit without risks. That`s truism. I mean, we don`t need to participate, just chill out, and play what we want. By today`s standard back catalog for people without 12-14h of free time is endless. I had this exercise last year, start using "discovery queue" at Steam and after 13000 of ignored titles, i still have 867 games on wishlist. New titles added from time to time. I don`t even need media coverage for discoverability anymore (mainy because indie coverage is so small portion of their content, due to the corporate standards) Be a "gamer" take a drink and raise a toast when every once in a while, some megacorp overestimated so much that the investment fund will shut everything down and shifts business to buying copper or trading water.

    I’m not going to make this personal, but the decision to change survival from ranged into a melee spec was probably the single worst class design decision I can think of. Ranged survival was one of the most popular ranged dps specs in the game in WoD, and it became by far the least popular dps spec in the game after it went melee, and has remained so to this day. As far as fantasy is concerned, melee survival has a very weak fantasy. Is it a trapper? Is it a primal spear user? Is it an explosive expert? Is it a beast master? It’s a mess. BM to me was the clear choice to make a hunter melee spec for, and fits the fantasy of Rexxar MUCH MUCH MUCH better, which is the character always used as the poster child for melee hunters.

    I don't completely agree with you. There are many AAA titles that come out in top condition but they are usually ignored cause majority are glued to the usual live service games (COD, Battlefield etc). I think you should obviously support indie developers but to say that there aren't any good AAA games is just simply untrue. We welcome something new but if you can improve on what we have then that will work too. Just stop supporting predatory companies, simple as that.

    Interesting to hear that only 5% of games make back their development budget (I assume you're including marketing, too). It seems like the same model obtains in the publishing industry as well, where only 2% of the books are blockbusters and 95% sell diddly. The difference seems to be that in the publishing industry, the blockbusters fund the publication of the other 95% - it's sort of understood that most books will flop - whereas in the game industry, all the publishers chase the blockbusters and seem to have little tolerance to back the little, experimental projects.

      Its not really a depression. Sale numbers are steadily growing. Problem is the targetted audience. Majority of big spenders are parents of the kids. And kids usually cant tell difference between good and bad game. They just give in to hype train (All media talks about CoD Black Ops 6 and therefore it must be worth playing). So big AAA game companies save costs on development and instead pump money into marketing, so the kids will want to play their game. Its vicious cycle.

    I've noticed that discoverability is the biggest issue. There are a lot of games out there that I would enjoy, probably could even be my favorite game of all time but I will never even hear about it because it never reaches my screen. Meanwhile I know of all new assassins creed releases despite not having played them for 15 years now. There's also so much releasing and it's extremely hard from an initial visual view to know if the game will be good. The internet is also filled with a lot of niche audiences praising games or casual gamers that don't have a advanced palette yet that praise sub-par games. Meaning professional reviewers, footage and online comments aren't reliable to find what you like either. The industry used to be closed and small enough that I had a firm grasp of whatever released and to kinda know the quality, type of game to decide what was worth my time. Nowadays I straight up miss masterpieces all the time because it's impossible for me to monitor everything, and even if I did it's almost impossible to distinguish good games from bad games just by looking at it.

    Sorry you're getting so many negative comments over Survival Hunter ... it is currently one of my favorite specs in the game & I raid Mythic as one currently. It is a ton of fun! I am so grateful for the changes you made back in Legion for the spec. I know many people are still not happy with the ranged Survival being gone but, Legion Survival brought a whole new, unique gameplay that breathed a lot of life into Hunter. Even today, Beast Mastery is extremely boring to me and I have no interest in Marksmanship. There are not many of us playing the spec but, the people who do are completely dedicated to it and play it at very high levels. And it is our little best kept secret that no one touches. So thank you for being a part of that!

    People buy games they like or at least think they will, and taking risks is part of a hobby like gaming. You could personally hate a game that is functionally very good or even well received by others. The answer is always buy what you like and can afford, dont obsess over the things you do like or cant buy if you can and learn from the things you do buy what to avoid later. Dont use buzz terms like AAA to decide because thouse terms usually mean nearly nothing. It just means a high budget and lots of high budget stuff ends up garbage and always has. Companies dont owe every potential consumer a product they will like. If you dont like something dont play it. If enough people agree it will fail and new games like it will be discouraged. If people dont agree then it will make money and continue inspite if your personal taste.

This is the main reason I don't like the use of the word 'industry' for enterprises where art is integral to a great extent, "games fabricator" sounds as fun as one would expect... XD

    • @Eyedunno
      @Eyedunno Месяц назад

      The big difference with the movie industry is that even low-budget movies cost a lot of money to make with very few exceptions (as in it's rare for a movie to cost less than 100K, very, very rare for one to cost less than $20K, and a $1 million or $2 million budget is still considered very low-budget). Whereas in gaming, you have lots of Undertales and Vampire Survivorses out there that sell as many or more copies as games with half-decade development cycles and Hollywood actors doing the voices lol. So the movie industry can get away with this shit while the gaming industry probably can't.
