- Have you ever been creatively stuck? Staring at a blank page, struggling to come up with an idea for a game, or even an idea for a feature.
So today lets go over 3 methods that I used at Blizzard to generate ideas.
Ill share with you the gamedev methods i used, how I used these to design new features for Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft, talk about tools and systems that come in handy when ideating.
These methods work great for:
- Professional Game Dev
- indie Game Dev
- Solo Developers
Included links in the description that IDEO has shared with a number of tools and advice on how to improve your brainstorming method:

Generally good and interesting ideas here. My one critique would be that the first example of brainstorming is quite hard to apply to solo devs or even small dev teams. In your example you had 40 people which just blows my mind. I would love to be able to do that with some of the problems I have, but often it's just me or one or two others trying to tackle something and it's more like a conversation than a brainstorm? Unless you have ideas of how to shift the nature of the discussion into something more brainstormy?
It can be tough, but I have done that first one with much smaller groups. As I noted, you end up breaking that larger set into smaller groups anyway. I ended up with many groups of about 5, which increased the volume for sure, but I have done it with just 4-5 folks.
This was an incredibly insightful video and I appreciate you for taking the time to create it. Thanks a ton and hope you have a happy new year!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you found the video insightful and I appreciate your support. Wishing you a happy new year too!
It's a good addition to my Creativity Methods Lecture. Thanks!
Oh thats awesome! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for the video! I'm a big fan of Steal Like an Artist and reread it quite regularly (may be due a reread soon tbh...) think I mostly need to throw more ideas away, or refine what's there before sticking more things on...
For brainstorming doing method 1, how would you approach accessibility while keeping the energy up, if someone couldn’t stand for long periods of time?
If there was an accessibility issue that would of course need to be accommodated.
@@AndrewChambersDesign of course! I did not intend to imply that the accessibility concerns wouldn’t be addressed. To rephrase my question, if someone on the team couldn’t remain standing for long periods of time, how would you approach providing accommodation while making sure that the goal of the exercise was accomplished?
Bonza!
Baba!
What are your best methods for generating new ideas?
Mind Mapping + Walt Disney Method
As a gamedev, I can wholeheartedly say, I'm sick and tired of videos/tutorials that think it's clever to obscure the content of the video with Method 1,2,3 etc.
Bro, just mark them as what they are instead of making the chapter markings utterly useless.
So, for posterity:
Method 1: Brainstorming
Method 2 & 3: didn't care to watch on and waste my time further. if it takes up until nearly half the video to explain BRAINSTORMING, there's not going to be anything relevant coming after that.
I'm not trying to knock Andrew personally here so I'm saying this with utmost respect to him personally!
However, Blizzard certainly isn't the company you should go to if you're looking for good game designs.
Blizzard hasn't produced anything fresh concepts since about 2004 (WoW release) and both before and since the company has solely focused on milking their IPs through sequel, after sequel, after sequel.
Now, if you're looking for profitable monetization schemes, maybe take closer look then.
Thanks for the feedback?
