Okay, what he's essentially saying is he uses a child's word game to come up with new toy ideas. In the game you think of a word, and then another word that starts with the same letter as the last letter of the previous word. Apple-e-elephant-t-trumpet, and so on. And then you make an idea out of it. In his case, he uses the game to invent new toys.
It's the idea that's important, even if it was translated from Japanese.
Give us Shigeru Miyamoto! Even if he speaks Japanese, I will still watch his presentation. He is that awesome.

edit: I've been skimming the linked page for liek 5 minutes now and still don't see the actual subtitles for this video. I only see a bunch of stuff on how to learn more languages or helping them translate...

Kougeru it takes an editor that knows the language so you can actually synch the subtitles up. Yeah, its doable, but the youtube is a complete afterthought, TED talks are held for the live attendees, not the youtube viewers. RUclips is simply used as an archive for the VODs. Yeah, its lazy on their part, but they just dont care because youtube isnt their primary audience. I really dont think they care about pushing traffic to that site as much as you think, I cant think of a single reason they would

I am saying they put no effort into the VODs, not that the talk was bad. Saying the "video" was bad would include the talk itself, which I dont agree with, I think the talk was fine, I enjoyed it well enough. It just would have been nice if they put a bit more effort into the VODs so that more people could get the same enjoyment from it
Having said that, poking around on their site, it seems they dont just have a transcript, they have a subbed version of the video, so thats a thing
Shimpei is a toymaker, he had difficulties with trying to think of new ideas and thus threw data out of the window and thought of a new method of creating new ideas.
The method he thought of is a word game(shiritori) whereby he randomly thinks of words and join them together to form a random phrase. He gains inspiration from this method. This method could be also useful in making toys, writing, event hosting, etc.
It was a good speech!
He gave so much information, kept the speech short, and added silly humour and props. He is extremely talented. I wish I was that good in front of others.

I know just enough Japanese to get the general idea. It's basically playing shiritori and combining the chain of words into a new idea.
007MrYang Eh, kinda. The specific method wasnt really the point. The talk was about criticizing thinking in too restricted a manner, trying to base all your works only on what you are very familiar with, what you are fully informed on, and to instead be willing to think outside the box and try random ideas, explore down entirely random trains of thought to see what you can come up with. The specific one he mentioned using himself was shiritori, you use it to find two entirely unrelated words, then try and think about how you would actually combine the two ideas. Even though nearly every one is bound to be a failure the few ideas that do succeed will be more original, more innovative. He listed a range of other ways of getting random words like leafing through a dictionary and such because the specific means you get random words is irrelevant, the point is to find ideas truly at random and give real consideration to what it would mean to combine them

It thought the jingle at the beginning of the video said 'But' and translated 'konnichiwa' with 'This part'

Basically the game mentioned in the title is called "shiritori" in Japanese, where you try to come up with a word that begins with the last letter of the previous word. (He showed an example on his slide that said apple => elephant => trumpet. 'Apple' ends with 'e' and 'elephant' begins with 'e' and so on.)
He works in the toy business and uses this game to come up with ideas for toys. Even though many of the words he came up with seemed like they couldn't become toys, it was a good way to brainstorm. For example, he came up with a brush toy (the guitar toothbrush) and a hat toy (the hat with the green monster inside).
He said that this method of generating ideas and just throwing them out there doesn't only apply to the toy business, but really it can be used for anything. And you don't have to use that specific game to come up with ideas; it's just one method that he finds useful.

bruhhh I looked away from my screen forgetting the audio wasn't english and it took me a good second before I realized the words I could understand weren't being piped into my brain anymore- asside from that I realize I should actually comment on the content if I'm going to comment at all, and I think this will genuinely help me with coming up with ideas. I'm trying to learn how to program, but I've found it's kinda hard to without knowing what you want to do.
It would be nice... if TED could tell us which language the video is in. Also, the youtube subtitles make no sense.

It will be another 20 years or so at this rate before asian languages can be mechanically translated into something similar to a human translation. Its doubly worse for this sort of translation where it isnt just reading text, but taking audio and putting that into sentences which it already screws up constantly, THEN trying to translate it with its poor translation softwareThere is an actual subbed version if you check the description, no idea why they didnt use that for the youtube release, pretty stupid really

I wonder if non-english speakers complain when English TED talks are given without a choice of subs? Instead of complaining, go to the TED website and watch it there, it has subs.
Basically he is playing a common game in which you take the last letter of a word and think of a new one beginning with that letter. You carry this on until you have an idea. This is to help thinking for developers I guess to sort through 'data data data' I think.
These are the times that make me glad I am learning the Japanese :)

Japanese learn english as a mandatory subject (though their spoken tends to be fairly poor) so anyone that can understand the talk should also be able to understand the title
It may well be an attempt to drive traffic to the website, I cant say for sure, though if it was I wouldnt call that clickbait, clickbait refers to something a bit different. Personally I think it is just done due to a lack of resources allocated for the youtube. Synching subs up to a video takes editing, specifically an editor that knows the language. They have videos from a range of different speakers in different languages so while possible, it would require work to standardize subs for all the videos. As for the title, having it all in english also makes indexing easier. It is nice for people to be able to find a talk they want to watch without having to learn to type foreign letters
Yes, they are all solvable problems clearly, the barrier to solving them is just the extra effort. Since the youtube uploads are an afterthought it doesnt seem like they want to put in any extra effort, they just want an archive for the videos. It sucks but eh, it is what it is. I am just happy they make these videos public for free at all given their purpose behind the talks has nothing to do with youtube

You force those words to connect to what you want to think of and form ideas. In my case, for example, since I want to think of toys, what could a toy cat be? A cat that lands after doing a somersault from a high place? How about a toy with cola? A toy gun where you shoot cola and get someone soaking wet? (Laughter) Ridiculous ideas are okay. The key is to keep them flowing. The more ideas you produce, you're sure to come up with some good ones, too. A brush, for example. Can we make a toothbrush into a toy? We could combine a toothbrush with a guitar and -- (Music noises) -- you've got a toy you can play with while brushing your teeth. (Laughter) (Applause) Kids who don't like to brush their teeth might begin to like it. Can we make a hat into a toy? How about something like a roulette game, where you try the hat on one by one, and then, when someone puts it on, a scary alien breaks through the top screaming, "Ahh!" I wonder if there would be a demand for this at parties? Ideas that didn't come out while you stare at the data will start to come out. Actually, this bubble wrap, which is used to pack fragile objects, combined with a toy, made Mugen Pop Pop, a toy where you can pop the bubbles as much as you like. It was a big hit when it reached stores. Data had nothing to do with its success. Although it's only popping bubbles, it's a great way to kill time, so please pass this around amongst yourselves today and play with it. (Applause) Anyway, you continue to come up with useless ideas. Think up many trivial ideas, everyone. If you base your ideas on data analysis and know what you're aiming for, you'll end up trying too hard, and you can't produce new ideas. Even if you know what your aim is, think of ideas as freely as if you were throwing darts with your eyes closed. If you do this, you surely will hit somewhere near the center. At least one will. That's the one you should choose. If you do so, that idea will be in demand and, moreover, it will be brand new. That is how I think of new ideas. It doesn't have to be Shiritori; there are many different methods. You just have to choose words at random. You can flip through a dictionary and choose words at random. For example, you could look up two random letters and gather the results or go to the store and connect product names with what you want to think of. The point is to gather random words, not information from the category you're thinking for. If you do this, the ingredients for the association of ideas are collected and form connections that will produce many ideas. The greatest advantage to this method is the continuous flow of images. Because you're thinking of one word after another, the image of the previous word is still with you. That image will automatically be related with future words. Unconsciously, a concert will be connected to a brush and a roulette game will be connected to a hat. You wouldn't even realize it. You can come up with ideas that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. This method is, of course, not just for toys. You can collect ideas for books, apps, events, and many other projects. I hope you all try this method. There are futures that are born from data. However, using this silly game called Shiritori, I look forward to the exciting future you will create, a future you couldn't even imagine. Thank you very much. (Applause)
