Don't be a drama queen. Change the oil and note the issues on the work order. I work on a lot of high milage vehicles. Just like a home inspector, you give your best evaluation and move on.
@larryfine4498: That's how every shop I've been to does it. They actually use oil change specials as a business attraction. Just imagine if quick lube shops started refusing oil changes because of minor oil leaks. Most mechanics expect a high mileage car to have some sort of leak among other issues.
Thats some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Notarize it as existing prior to service and move on. If its a bigger problem, bring it up to the customer so they can decide how to move forward. Refusing service because of a small leak? Pathetic.
Geez, this is why my young 13 and 16 daughter can do all this stuff on our 6.7 Cummins. Turbo 6.7 rebuild, pulling egr and fuel rail, intake swap, oil change, fuel filters, HVAC recharge with real gauges and measure superheat, battery install, valve clearances, etc. I see this stuff and wonder if I've trained them enough. This morning they are out finishing up a roll of T11 and dual shield wire, then we will do regular short circuit and some spray transfer welding. Next week is a bunch of mig alunimum, then on to TIG. Can't get decent service anywhere anymore.
@anthonynastasi4098 Yes maybe it's the recession, but I think I'm seeing the state of vehicles coming into shops is way down, owners just not even aware or caring about their vehicles. I dont work in the industry so it's all anecdotal.
My truck drveloped an oil leak at 240k miles and my mechanic said it was coming from the oil sending unit and he suggested to wait until i needed a new clutch to fix it considering it was using half a quart between the 3000 miles of oild changes. Its now at 335k miles and the clutch is still working
My gmc Sierra has 240,000 and runs great. Glad I do my own work lol. It leaks about a quart oil of between changes. It’s not worth pulling the crossmember and steering rack just to fix an oil pan gasket.
There's no need to pay a shop if your vehicle has the self-changing oil feature. Just wheel into a full service gas station and say "check the gas and filler up with oil in the crankcase."
Advantage Visual oil check If theres oil under it theres oil in it And it will help keep the rest of the car from rusting out😂 Its not a vital system like brakes that will cause an accident let them know and let them go on their way if that's what they choose
Once upon A time, your engine came with a replaceable, PCV valve. (Positive crankcase ventilation) And then the brilliant marketing engineers at most of your Automotive manufacturers. Decided that they were either going to make the PCV valve, incredibly difficult to change. Very expensive to change, or, just did away with it all together. So where does the positive crankcase ventilation go, if it can't get burned back in the system? Just like water, and electricity, it takes the least path of resistance, out of your engine. Which is typically, the front and rear seals, around the crankshaft. Removing a $3.50, component, from the system, has cost the American people, thousands and thousands of dollars, in repair bills .... You thought you were buying a car. But, what you got, was economic oppression. Economic oppression, and negative equity, are the new business model of the automotive industry. It's all about keeping the union working. Even if all they're doing is building junk.
The automotive dealership association of America did a survey amongst all of their, working technicians. In the dealerships. 85% of them say..... There is no pathway to economic prosperity in the automotive industry anymore. And they will be leaving by 2025... Learning to code, and making videos, or participating in the gig economy, is far more profitable than fixing cars.

I’d never really considered this. Ultimately, I agree with Anthony. An oil change is not worth the possible blow-back from a customer who may claim the shop caused the issue. It’s Anthony’s shop and his rules. I’d like to know my mechanic has a set of standards for service. If I had to have all work done on my rig I’d want to have a quality relationship with one mechanic who only worked on the rig. If I were in Anthony’s area I would use his business.

I had a big-name shop decline to do the oil change due to a leak. They showed me how bad the pan looked, told me it was a corporate policy after problems with customers blaming shops for causing the leak. Understandable. No argument from me. But they actually topped off the 1/2 quart low oil for free, knowing I'd have to drive it to get it steam cleaned before they'd repair the leak. Turned out they didn't get the pan gasket job (a small shop did it as-was with no issue), but the big-name got the tire sale when I needed tires.

A small leak no problem but if its actually dripping we won't change the oil unless they fix the leak first. We top it up and send them on their way.
