    Had a bimmer in today for work - I've serviced a lot of cars, never seen an oil filter coated with a solid, toffee consistency layer of hardened oil, 5mm thick, all over the filter. Took a screwdriver to dig down into it to get to even see the filter paper. Zero oil was passing through that filter. Nada. Dropped the "oil" & it was the consistency of tapioca. All 3 liters of it.
    Going by the drain plug, the filter housing & just general nouse, I reckon that this car had never had an oil change since new. 140k km on the clock. Service book all stamped up to date nice & purty... Brakes were in no better state.
    A lot of garages out there pulling peoples plums IMO, Baz - they get the bills, but not the work done. You will know this yourself.

    I think the extended service intervals of 18000 miles between oil changes does not help with the wet belts. I use the Ford labelled Castrol 5w20 every 12 months and I am only doing between 4000 - 5000 miles a year but mainly short journeys. Hopefully this will delay the inevitable failure as long as possible.

    Baz, there's also a mesh strainer in the "Oil Pressure Control Solenoid" that can block with wet belt debris. This solenoid is on the rear of the engine block, beside the plug where the crank timing pin screws in. There's a Dayco instruction video on RUclips "Garage Wire" Channel showing this solenoid being removed to check and clean the mesh strainer.

    Top job as always. I realise the camshafts are the last place to get oil hence the decision that if the cams are unmarked the engine is probably ok. Did you consider removing a big end to check bearing condition as they are the last place in the main bearing / big end line of oil flow? Clearly with the light going out so quickly all is well but interested in your perspective.

    • @bazmeredith
      @bazmeredith  8 дней назад +1

      I was led to believe it had just happened with the light, so many things I could have pointed out in the video... If the crank had any signs of blue marking I would have pulled a cap off and looked the crank, and again with the cams, if any metal fillings were in the pick up I would have checked it more thoroughly.

Car needs full service history dosnt need to be ford dealer service history, year 2020 is allowed to be missing due to covid, and you get 3 months leeway either side of the service due dates to be covered. Even for small things such as new heat shields, the work has been done only at Ford garages.
