I was almost set on the rg cube then this got announced, the sticks are better and it even has the better 4:3 screen you mentioned would be nice in your extended review of the rg cube. So now we wait for a better horizontal version with the same sticks and probably the same screen.
@@RetroGameCorps kudos brother, oops there goes another Nintendo Games once again. For those who plays more with fighting games like myself the horizontal handled is a must.
At this point, Anbernic should just do a "build your own device" option where you can pick any of their devices designs thus far and pick your own parts.
I have no desire to own this device. I just enjoy listening to you talk about integer scaling and hall effect sticks. I really hope they refresh the RG556 like you mentioned!
Especially when they need a replacement of sticks for full analog ones. The poor analog stick inputs is hampering the 556 potential with any games at PS1 beyond. Even PS2
I think that an H version, horizontal and with better positioned analogues and horizontal triggers, will be a must-buy for me. Regards from Spain and thanks for your review 😘
All I want is an rg405m, with a little more powerful chip, slightly thinner, and has HDMI out, if they can make the bezels thinner and make the device any smaller then that is a bonus.
I honestly love the design and I’m glad that at least one company is able to do this. My 405 feels great in my hands, I wouldn’t change it in terms of ergonomics and style.
Does this play crusin USA past the 2nd race without freezing? How's the sound on Crusin USA? Does it have The Simpsons arcade game also with the 2 player coin opt so you can choose other characters instead of only playing with Marge?
The cardinal snapping was never caused by the quality of the sticks, it was a software issue that they happen to have fixed at the same time they changed the sticks. My source is the fact that the community recently released a fix for the XX series that gives proper analogue input.
@@riturajdas Well the fix would be completely different because the RG cube is android based and a totally different chip from the XX line, but I think I read somewhere that it was fixed in GammaOS? Not sure if Anbernic will fix it on the official side.
that was going to be my question is it really a hardware issue with the sticks concerning cardinal snapping or is it really a software issue? It would seem to be a software issue but I don't know enough about the design of the older sticks on the RG556 and RGCube to say.

Anyway, great review! This device is really interesting; i do hope that the new display panel and the upgraded analog sticks are a harbinger of things to come with Anbernic. The future keeps being exciting!
@wordsmith451 Right, i know that, but i feel like a primer that’s all in one place instead of scattered across several device reviews would be really helpful for the emulation community

This is easily going to replace my 405V! 💚I loved that thing, but it had it's shortcomings. The fact that this updated unit is dropping for about the same price, especially so soon, is mind-blowing!
@user-lg5xu6id5j If there's a game that almost runs on the 405V, it will most likely run at full speed and/or up-resed one or two steps! It's a sizeable upgrade! That, and the sticks are genuinely the biggest upgrade! They don't snap to cardinals, and they have more travel, despite only being a little bit taller! 💚
This checks so many boxes for me - 4:3 screen, 720p, good analogue sticks and d-pad, PS2/GC capable, and somehow it looks like a fisher price toy. When you showed it side by side with the 40XXV it just highlighted how sleek that industrial design is. Makes me want a hybrid of the two…

I nearly bought the 405M, but the lack of video out killed my interest. The RG Cube has video out, but only for as long as the battery lasts because it can't charge at the same time. If they can fix that in time for the inevitable 406M/H then I'll be all over it.
Yeah.. I love the design of RG405M, it's really compact and pocketable. One of the best design of retro handleds. I hope the next RG406M will share the same design, with better shoulder buttons. And also, Anbernic really need to copy retroid with 4" 4:3 960p display (the best resolution for integer scaling) and SD865 (most capable SOC, especially compared to T820).
Im really excited about what is coming too, the obvious 406M is goin to be really awesome with the new analog sticks! I hope they can make the right choice and give us some analog inputs at shoulder and triggers Great video as always! Thank you for your work Russ! Huge fan here
Thank god for Anbernic giving reviewers like Russ a stream of content to produce and for us to watch lol I always end up watching these even though I really don’t want anything anymore lmao
I know, but I was thinking of something that would look like an NES, sit in a cabinet under the TV and have controllers. Anbernic has experience and quality, it would be great to have such a console from them.
I'll just wait for the inevitable "Anbernic RG406H" - keep the 4" inch/4:3 ratio/960x720 resolution screen, keep the "Nintendo style" D-pad (over the "Sega style" circular pad found on the RG Cube or RG Arc), and DEFINITELY keep the true analog sticks with no cardinal snapping... and then put all of those into a horizontal form factor instead with much quieter stacked shoulder buttons. Please, Anbernic, just give the people what they want!
Glad to see that the Joysticks and Screen Resolution has Improved, but just like ALL the Other Anbernic Handhelds it’s best for everyone to Wait like a Month just in Case they Announce yet another Handheld.
I’ll probably call it a day once we have accurate, portable PS3/360 emulation along with at least 8tb micro storage options but this will do for now. 😄
I like your videos man. I don’t know a lot about the insides of the consoles but you explain everything thoroughly and concise. Really makes me excited to order a 406v tonight!!!
What an amazing review video, this is why you're the best at this! It's super useful how you go in depth with stuff like aspect ratio for each console, shaders, and how fast games run with different settings. Thank you!
I don't often tune into RGC videos. I respect them and Russ greatly; but, I can't justify sinking hours of my life each week into learning more about random things that I have zero interest in actually buying. However, whenever Russ covers something that I am interested in buying, well, I become very happy that his videos are feature length. Such is the case here. If Russ reads this comment, I just want to say thank you for doing such a solid job with this review and helping to inform a future buying decision. I really, really like the RG406V. I also really liked its predecessor, the RG405V. I appreciate the rubenesque shape of these units. They look as comfortable to hold as a chubby girlfriend. I didn't jump on last year's RG405, either one, because the T618 wasn't quite powerful enough to justify the cost to my mind and my wallet. The T820 powered RG406V doesn't have such weakness. Because I have very little interest in Switch or Windows emulation at the moment; I can honestly say that this is probably an end game device for me, similarly to how the Odin2 was end game for so many other people in this community. The only knock I have is that it doesn't have analog triggers. I initially didn't expect it to have them; however, their official spec sheet released a couple of days ago said that it did and that got my hopes up. No matter, I'm used to mapping throttle and brakes to the right stick anyways, PS1 style.
Just came to share some RATM appreciation, nice shirt. Great review too, of course, I'm in the same boat, excited about what's coming next, as it looks we are getting closer to the "perfect" (for now) handheld that ticks all the boxes.
Just wish this had hdmi out and charged at the same time so it could be a portable retro console and handheld. Thank you so much for this in depth review. Now i wonder if I can find something that fits my needs and as good or better then this for under $200.
There are so many options and I've bought so many that I'm confident in that I'll never see my perfect "everything" option. 40xxv vertical form factor with rear grip like this one, dual new sticks, 3:2 screen, dual Android and Linux OSes.
I think I’m sold on the 406v over anything under $220 to start but will wait until the holidays to see if price drops. Based on the few reviews I watched this one works for me and don’t mind the criticisms mentioned. I was looking at cheaper vertical handhelds but now favor this one lol
Imma wait 3 to 5 years more before i replace my og rg35xx. I'm fine playing GB to PS1 games on my current device. A true upgrade would be a device with a very good PSP, DC, GC, and PS2 emulation.
Thank you so much for the in-depth Saturn explanation! I hope that we, in the near future, will get a small compact emulator handheld that can run Saturn games with no issues.
Thank you, this is very helpful. I just placed an order to get this (It's kinda hilarious that the thing you disliked the most - the design - is what got me to look up the handheld in the first place lol)
I have the previous RG405V and the ergonomics are next level if you prefer verticals, like I do. Looks like this is an impressive straight upgrade from there, which is very cool.
Wouldn't it be much better if Anbernic let's Russ revieuw a system BEFORE releasing it all together? They definitely listen to the feedback keep on imporiving their devices every time, but they never seem to consider flying in some people that know their stuff and create the perfect machine from the get go. It would be so much more efficient and benneficial for all parties involved..
If they do that, it will cost them more, cause basically they're hiring a consultant With this youtuber model they just send out 1 device and it's done, much faster and cheaper, and in term of sale Ambernic is doing very well so I guess that's how they roll
I usually don't like the design of vertical handhelds with dual analog sticks, but that one looks great. I think Anbernic took the right course with their visual language, almost all of their latest devices are aesthetically pleasant. Also it's cool to see new sticks, I hope all of the upcoming devices will have them, including budget ones (I'm waiting for the CubeXX)
Maybe it's my jeans but I would never put a handheld, any handheld, in my pocket. I don't understand the obsession with putting electronics in pockets.
Although it’s more common than it used to be, men don’t generally carry a bag (at least in my anecdotal experience in the US). So having pocketable devices is nice for some.
Regarding Nintendo’s recent actions on emulation and towards this channel, this is the only solution: *All types of intellectual property (IP) laws must be fully abolished immediately, in any and all jurisdictions worldwide.* All IP laws are extremely unethical for humankind. Against Intellectual Monopoly is the most informative book humanity has on the subject now. Against Intellectual Property is _another_ incredible essay, but it’s written with right-libertarian rhetoric so if you’re, like me, not right-libertarian you’ll have to read with an open mind and extract the info. _Only_ these two texts are the gold standard when it comes to intellectual property.
I'm pretty agree, I just have the same feeling : to be very exiting for what's going to happen next... I pretty like the aesthetic turning point of Retroid, the mini looks so cool, and also the technical achievement of this one. Hope Anbernic will definitely also take a aesthetic turning point, Retroid just showed us that those handhelds can be differents.
The budget space always seems to have at least one major caveat in what they can do for me. In this case, it's not being able to charge it while connected to a TV. Once you jump to about twice the budget price the major caveat(s) seems to disappear, but they play more systems than I need and cost more than I'd like to spend. There seems to be this wall for the $50-90 price range for a device that does what I am looking for.
If I didn’t have the RG Cube I might have picked up this one; looks pretty much like a one stop shop for all my gaming needs with a very nice screen and sticks
I really love this form factor, it feels like I have the original GameBoy in my hands. So for me the bulky design is a plus. I liked the colorschemes of the RG405V better, but this extra power and analogue sticks makes it for me a welcome upgrade.
i wanna get a retro handheld, these devices are awesome cause they give u the childhood chills and i just wanna say thanks for the review :) probably will get this one or the Retroid Pocket 5
I put off buying the rg353v and rg405v just cause I wanted a little more power and better res screen but then settled on rg35xxh and reallly like it but still want more power and screen. I want a vertical style one at some point and probably will get the rg556 unless something else better suited comes out in the next 6-8 weeks. Love the content of your reviews Russ, very helpful and appreciate the biased and unbiased opinions.
I have the 405 and I love this device but I would love him to make an OLED display. That's what I'm waiting for. That would be a total game changer because when you look at the display from another angle it's really weird.
I want to buy my first retro handheld and this honestly seems ideal. I do like playing games that require analogue sticks and I prefer this old school Game Boy vertical design. I also won't play outside my home, it's more like a device to play in bed or when the TV is occupied. This seems like a thing that can play anything I want and the price on Aliexpress is awesome. So I'm sold :D
Great Review, as always. I want to throw my perspective in the ring too, as a happy user of a RG405V: Like you said at the end, it seems like an incremental upgrade in all aspects. But it seems to improve on every of those things: Better screen, sticks, chipset etc. I do agree, that a thiner bezzle would have been better, since it makes the screen look a bit smaller than it actually is. All in all it doesn't feel like a huge jump from where I am at with a 405V. Where I have to disagree on a personal preferences level is that I do not think this is too chunky. On the contrary I like this bigger and vertical formfactor, since it's way more comfortable to me. I'm not a big fan of all those small or micro devices and I think if you don't have all those smaller devices laying around or to compare it to, it's not that big or chunky (at least not as huge as many reviewers make it out to be). I guess it's just a matter of perspective and preference, nevertheless I just wanted to adress it. There seems to be kind of a bias towards smaller devices (not specifically from you that is, but in general reviews of these handhelds seem to praise small devices and talk down larger ones) and I get it in terms of portability/ pocketability. But the consensus in reviews of bigger handhelds seems to be "I have no idea who this is for". So much so, that most reviews don't even bother to compare similar devices to the 405V as if it's the exiled uncle noone likes and I don't understand why tbh. Sorry for going off on this tangent, like I said great review, you're doing a fantastic job with keeping up with all these devices and you talk about all the important points. Thanks for your thourough reviews.
I think I am officially feeling the fatigue for these devices hahaha it’s so exhausting to always have a new thing with *slight* improvements coming out all the time. Like I love my Rg556, but knowing that now Anbernic is using better sticks is a bummer. What could be if they just relaxed and didn’t release something new every 3 weeks

What an amazing review video, this is why you're the best at this!
It's super useful how you go in depth with stuff like aspect ratio for each console, shaders, and how fast games run with different settings. Thank you!
Well time to throw away the old rgxx40v and upgrade to this, that was a fun week i guess
😂 lol yea, foreals!
😂 I snorted
Dude I was just about to buy the RG40XXV until I saw the RG406V on sale and searched up a review on it 🤣 There's too many of these things.
Just ordered myself a 406V a few days ago! I like all the features including the design. Especially, when having the 405V.
Best review I've ever watched for the RG406V. Thank you.
So now it's time ti wait for a 406m or 406h :D
Just came to share some RATM appreciation, nice shirt.
Great review too, of course, I'm in the same boat, excited about what's coming next, as it looks we are getting closer to the "perfect" (for now) handheld that ticks all the boxes.
Once we get this screen in the form factor of the RG405M, I will be HAPPY
I’d rather have a RG406H, the M is to expensive 😅
@@LuluManager2 you'd think that a 406H would be more likely too, those metal shells will add a higher up-front cost for Anbernic too.
And hopefully with a plastic shell and some decent color options!
Just wish this had hdmi out and charged at the same time so it could be a portable retro console and handheld. Thank you so much for this in depth review. Now i wonder if I can find something that fits my needs and as good or better then this for under $200.
I hit the like button every time i hear the intro music❤
There are so many options and I've bought so many that I'm confident in that I'll never see my perfect "everything" option. 40xxv vertical form factor with rear grip like this one, dual new sticks, 3:2 screen, dual Android and Linux OSes.
I’m hoping this is an introduction to the promised 406M
Your videos always make me feel warm and cozy. Idk why they just do e
This handheld somehow looks terrible but is so appealing. The sticks, screen, power and ergonomics have got me interested!
Very comfortable affordable clothes vs "this looks amasing" clothes.

Waiting for the next one, your summary was spot on
I hope rg 406 h comes with analog triggers next 😅
PHEW... despite the better screen and analogue sticks, there's no wood model. I have no regrets with my wood 405V that I got earlier this year haha.
Yeah, honestly I think I’m going to wait another year before upgrading. I hope they bring the woodgrain back with an even faster chip in the future!
Thank you, this is very helpful. I just placed an order to get this (It's kinda hilarious that the thing you disliked the most - the design - is what got me to look up the handheld in the first place lol)
"its been a few weeks and you know what it means" lmfaoooooooo
I have the previous RG405V and the ergonomics are next level if you prefer verticals, like I do. Looks like this is an impressive straight upgrade from there, which is very cool.
Wouldn't it be much better if Anbernic let's Russ revieuw a system BEFORE releasing it all together? They definitely listen to the feedback keep on imporiving their devices every time, but they never seem to consider flying in some people that know their stuff and create the perfect machine from the get go. It would be so much more efficient and benneficial for all parties involved..
If they do that, it will cost them more, cause basically they're hiring a consultant
With this youtuber model they just send out 1 device and it's done, much faster and cheaper, and in term of sale Ambernic is doing very well so I guess that's how they roll
50% of the reason why I click on these is the intro song lol
I despise it
Stranger things vibes, also I love it too.
Thank you!! I thought I was the only one.
It's a banger 🤘
The number of these emulator devices released is insane with minor incremental improvements
So horizontal version next month?
With amoled screen no doubt 😂😂
man these videos always so relaxing
I'm looking forward to your music video using rear L1 and L2 buttons on Anbernic devices! I'm sure it will be a banger!
Need a 406h with same form factor as the 40xxh. Might be my end all retro handheld.
Do you not put your phone in your pocket?
@@josephherrera8587 My shirt pocket. I don't like anything on my pants pockets.
Rg353m fits in my jeans like a hand in a glove. Find the one that fits you. You will absolutely not be disappointed.
Fanny pack all the way
Excited to keep seeing anbernic growing.
1:44 snack and drink time
Finally a handheld that does decent emulation for GameCube and ps2 😊 just ordered mine!
Regarding Nintendo’s recent actions on emulation and towards this channel, this is the only solution:
*All types of intellectual property (IP) laws must be fully abolished immediately, in any and all jurisdictions worldwide.* All IP laws are extremely unethical for humankind.
I also have a playlist (not _my_ videos) of *the* best videos on intellectual property laws on my channel for all interested.
Like you I'm actually excited for this "boring" release. These small upgrades take one of my fav vertical devices and perfect it.
Getting a little crazy with these $200+ handhelds
I'm pretty agree, I just have the same feeling : to be very exiting for what's going to happen next... I pretty like the aesthetic turning point of Retroid, the mini looks so cool, and also the technical achievement of this one. Hope Anbernic will definitely also take a aesthetic turning point, Retroid just showed us that those handhelds can be differents.
ngl this is fugly. with that price, might as well get the Retroid Pocket 5...
For me this means that the 406m or 406H is coming, that is very interesting.
If I didn’t have the RG Cube I might have picked up this one; looks pretty much like a one stop shop for all my gaming needs with a very nice screen and sticks
I already sent back the RG40XXV, as nice as it is & as much as I like it, but this is way way better, capability-wise, especially for a vertical.
I like the chunky bezels and soft curves, I hope it’s as durable as it looks.
I really think you will love the rg406h, and possibly the rg406hm even more!
I have the 405 and I love this device but I would love him to make an OLED display. That's what I'm waiting for. That would be a total game changer because when you look at the display from another angle it's really weird.
Now to wait for the 406m!
an updated arc with this hardware and these analogue sticks would be amazing.
Dang. Snagged one. Perfect 4:3 compliment to my RP4 Pro. The white one is 👌
I appreciate the sound quality of this device, but I'll hold off and check if Anbernic will launch the 406M.
Great Review, as always. I want to throw my perspective in the ring too, as a happy user of a RG405V:
Like you said at the end, it seems like an incremental upgrade in all aspects.
Totally agree with your comment 👌
If ever there was a comment that deserved to be pinned it's this one.
