I would so appreciate a Batocera setup guide as well, Russ. Just ordered the 35XX H after watching this review. Been watching your videos for almost a year, and this is the first retro handheld system I'm finally pulling the trigger on! You're the best!
I agree, I was able to do basic setup but a lot of these things don't feel as "plug and play." Some examples are Drastic hotkeys, and for some reason Yoshi's Island is giving me some latency when I try to keep a flutter jump going compared to other systems (Switch Online, New 3DS).
+1 I also bought the H cause of this video lol. Im using the batocera from the link provided, but man the battery is draining really bad even in standby mode with no game running. Also, was a bit hard to figure out how to switch the A and B button functions lol. Might try MuOS Beans that just came out, maybe would be better for me idk. I also notice that the colors seem kind of washed out compared to something like the RP3 I own. Wondering if theres a way to increase the vivid colors?
I rarely leave any comments on RUclips, but this time I have to. This review was INSANELY helpful. I was considering to buy the RG35XX H until I watched your original review and noticed the horrible stock OS. However, after watching this updated review, I decided to give it a try and bought it. But your video didn't just help me make a buying decision. It also gave me the right pointers to get started with Batocera and to figure out which emulation options to focus on when a game doesn't run smoothly out of the box. I was quite surprised that the device not only plays all the MS DOS, Game Boy and SNES classics from my childhood but also runs a lot of great ScummVM and PSX games like "Broken Sword" and "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2". It even handles the PSP version of "Def Jam: Fight For NY - The Takedown" flawlessly, one of my favorites from that era! It's a lot of gaming joy in a very tiny package, thanks a lot for updating your review!

Thanks for the video! your summary and conclusion couldn't have been clearer, which is why I finally pulled the trigger and bought the H version. Can wait for it to arrive and am looking forward to your updated Batocera setup guide ;)
I replaced my rg35xx with a rg35xx plus about a month ago, and I'm really loving it! I really like the vertical form factor because it reminds me of my old gameboy color, and I also got the impression that the chipset in the 35XX plus has better Linux support. On the practical side, I think this means there's potential for better CFW, but I also have a silly dream of some day plugging in a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and using it as a crappy desktop computer 😂
Thank you for uploading this while the wild sales were active! Unfortunately mine came faulty and the speakers make a constant static buzzing sound that I can't stand. I'll have to return it. Shame, because I really like this format.
Appreciate the time and effort to make these in-depth videos! I really love Batocera v40 on my RG35XX-H and with having a large collection, that screensaver tip is top notch! Such an easy and great way to find and play a random game!
@@earthsucks9555 Yes. My collection has 5 PGA golf games. They are: PGA European Tour, PGA Tour 96, PGA Tour Golf, PGA Tour Golf II, and PGA Tour Golf III. Hope this helps.
Based on your previous review, I got the rg35xx h from Ali a couple of days ago, knowing that custom firmware will come and make a good handheld, a great handheld. Thank you for showcasing and reviewing the firmware. Can't wait to dive right into it.
@selfmademusic206 so, I haven't seen one yet but I got mine setup with batocera. 1. Flash batocera using rufus 2. Install on RG35XX-H 3. Look for share partition when sd is plugged into computer, if you can't find one, use disk manager to assign the partition a letter 4. Make sure to put game zips in their individual system folders, not just the roms folder 5. Google is your friend, good luck, it took me almost 3 weeks to figure it out.
Anbernic have updated the stock software and it's improved the experience for me. I've used Skraper to add box art and it looks suprisingly good. I'm waiting for Batocera/Garlic to improve a bit more before I make the switch. Surprised how much I like the 'H'. Great vid Russ !
Never have I ever been so sold on a product before until I watched this video. I immediately went and bought the RG35XX H. Found it on Aliexpress for $50! I am so excited to get this.
We dont deserve russ! His videos are just way too good. He got me knee deep in retroemulation and i wouldnt want it any other way. Keep kickin ass Russ!!
Thank you for this run down! I just bought the 35XXH on a whim because it was on sale on Aliexpress. Total after tax and shipping was $46, which is a steal imo. The only other handheld I have is the Steam Deck OLED which I love more than anything, but I obviously can't fit it in my pocket, so I've been interested in a pocket retro device for a while now and couldn't fully justify a price $100 or more price tag since I primarily play everything I want on the Deck already. I was also considering playing on my iPhone now that emulators are hitting the app store, but touch controls are really hard for me to use and enjoy. Trying to find a slim controller with thumb sticks was also impossible (I wasn't a fan of the 8bitdo one where they stick out, as well as the back buttons that stick out). Regarding a dedicated retro handheld, the horizontal form factor as well as thumb sticks were a must, as well as the ability to play N64, PS1, and some NDS, so I was close to considering the Retroid 2S but have been waiting for a better price. I honestly don't think there will be a time where it'll drop lower than $50 so I'm happy with the 35XXH even if I wish I could play some PS2 and GC on a device that fits in my pocket. Maybe in the future we'll see something capable and affordable. Until then, I look forward to your future videos and appearance on the Nerd Nest Podcasts!
If it wasn't for the tiny 3.5" screen, I'd be all over this one, I like the form factor and the custom firmware is great. Great review as always Russ! Thanks for the re visit.
I waited 3 years for the RG35XX-H! I bought it 1 month ago and since then my PSP can finally rest because I used it for 2 years as my main Emulation Handheld for retro systems. But I used it soo much that the battery wich lastet 3-4 hours years ago has now only 2 hours of juice in it wich is not great and the screen is just not optimal outdoors. I almost got the RG351P because nowadays it got waaaay cheaper and i really wanted a pocketable emulation handheld with plastic shell but the aspect ratio was the reason I waited. I'm glad I did! I use it with the (updated) stock OS and it's enough for me. I REALLY love to do my own box arts for my games. If I see a nice wallpaper I download the picture and customize it for my liking. I only have 10 games at a time on it because I don't want to start a game and if I'm stuck on it start a new game. I take my time with every game and it's a great experience. Playing NeoGeo and (easy to run) DreamCast on it is such a nice welcome. Light weight PSP RPG's are my bread and butter and the screen for the RG35XX-H is sooooooo bright I'm not even annoyed with the aspect ratio. As a kid I watched Widescreen movies on our old CRT TV wich has black bars on the screen and this is a simmilar experience on the Handheld. It runs Tekken Dark Resurrection (exept for 2 levels) perfectly! Currently I play Paper Mario on it for the first time and maaaan it's such a fun RPG. Thank you Russ! I found your channer 3 years ago watching your RG351P videos and became a casual fan of Retro Handhelds. I'm not a tech nerd, the high end Android Handhelds are too much for my understanding, this is the reason why I got a Switch in the first place, but I like watching these kind of videos from you, Taki, TechDweeb etc...
Hey Russ, thanks for the video! I have been using MinUI in my RG35XX Plus, mainly because it has a feature, that none of the other options have (to my knowledge), that I think is very underrated. That is automatic power down and resume save state. This is very important to me because I often play games in short bursts and this feature allows me to simply hit the power button, which pauses and turns the screen off, and then if I don't come back to it within a few minutes it powers the device completely down to prevent battery drain. When I'm ready to play again I just power it on and within a few seconds I'm back in my game. I would be interested in trying Batocera, but the lack of this feature is a deal breaker for me. As you said, the sleep mode in Batocera just turns the screen off, but the battery continues to drain. I really hope the automatic power down and save feature is added to more custom firmwares. It gives you that Steam Deck like sleep and resume feeling which I just can't give up.
RG35XX H is actually about on par with an X55 or RGB10Max3. It is smaller, but the CFW has been supported better on the RG35XX series, so even though it has a weaker processor, it seems better optimized.
I just ordered an rg35xx-h for $50. I'm thinking I might get an rp4p to do N64, GameCube, and ps2 emulation. I think that's where these devices fit best since they're a bit more portable than the more powerful stuff
Depends on what systems/games you want to play, but I returned mine and got a used 3DS. These are really good for the price, but it wasn't comfortable and it felt cheap.
@@cosmicgamingunlimitedIsn't the RG35XX series (H700 processor) a bit more powerful than the X55 and RGB10Max3 (RK3566 processor)...? The H700 has a better Antutu total score anyway (72k vs 61k).
Thanks for the update! I can't wait to get my new firmware 😁👍 Please can you make that setup video though. I'm new to the retro handheld game and I find it much easier to follow someone else doing the tech stuff. BTW I got the Plus because I wanted the old gameboy when I was a kid but buying the H right now through your link as I do miss the sticks for more modern games.
Love the videos you convinced me to get my first emulator in the RG35XX + which arrives this week, I would love a start up guide for a first timer if possible
Batocera has been my go-to for Pi devices for a bit now and it's awesome to see them branch out to mobile devices. Before that it was retropi but the development on that seems so fixed in it's ways of "This is how we have always done it so that's how it's done" that any UI issues will never be addressed. The only issues I've run into Batocera is with the odd choice in hotkeys like you touched on and the limited shader options in the Batocera menu which is easily resolved with disabling shaders in batocera and setting the one you want in retoarch instead.
I had the H, and it's really great for all retro consoles, with the exception of N64 and PSP. which are both hit or miss in terms of performance. The screen was a bit too small for my bad eyes, but for anyone who wants to play GameBoy, Genesis, SNES, even PS1, this is really nice.
Dang, video seemed to imply N64 was pretty solid... Suddenly I'm not so tempted, the idea of an ultraportable and reliable N64 machine had me excited...
@@toasty4000000 Don't get me wrong, you can play several N64 games without problem, but Super Mario 64 ran poorly, Goldeneye ran poorly, Mario Kart was hit or miss... some games like the old wrestling games ran fine, but I think N64 puts this thing to its absolute limit. Plus, if you have average man hands, it's a bit uncomfortable to play with, but that really depends on the individual.
The RG35XX H is the successor to the RG351 P, and has the WiFi, Bluetooth, and HDMI out that the 351 P was meant to have but they ended up not putting into it. I feel it's really matured as a handheld in refinement and shows how much Anbernic can shine in this category and price point. 😁
Nice. Now I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should get the Anbernic RG35XX H or the Powkiddy RGB30 as my first ever and will probably be my only handheld :'))
Okay I'm sold, it's cheap right now as well. I've been looking for an emulation handheld over the past weeks to bring to work and play in my lunch break, that doesn't break the bank. Just ordered an RG35XX H 😁Thanks Russ, love your videos ♥
Nice work coming in hot with such a well detailed video in a growing sea of vids about these handhelds! My RG35XX-H will be delivered April 1st, can’t wait to download Batocera and explore a bunch of games!
I'd been looking into both these after seeing my friends 35xx plus and I had come to the same kind of conclusions, this video was great for reassuring me about how great they both are.
Hey dude, i just wanted to thank you for your videos. I just ordered a Rg35xx Plus after binge watching your reviews. The last chinese Handled i bought was the Retroid Pocket 2, a few years ago!
Thanks for this. I have been thinking about getting a retro device for some time now. I was set on geting a modded GBA with backlight and rechargability, but they run for $150+ at the cheapest. Then I found this and it seems much beter, especially considering I only really want it for 2D games, but having 3D games on it is a nice addition. I will definitely be looking into Batocera as well, since this thing having a so-so OS and sub par SD card seems to be the general consensus among retro reviewers. I'm definitely going for the RG35XX H, but I think I'll get it from Amazon, just trust it more, even if the price is higher. Thanks again man, this really helped.
I loved the comparison of myioo mini plus to the 35xx plus, but I think there also needs to be a comparison of the RG35xxH to the RGB30. It seems the RGB30 has a better chipset, and can be found for under 65 bucks on Ali right now... I NEED Russ's detailed expert opinion on this ;)
Same and more about cfw Portmaster. Although, I've seen people with Stardew Valley on RGB30, so it has portmaster working with that hand. It's SDV season with that 1.6 drop.
Russ said RGB30 was the perfect GB / PICO-8 machine, but I bought it because it was the cheapest RK3566 handheld. And I use it to play GTA Vice City and Half Life :-)
I just ordered a Transparent Black ANBERNIC RG35XX Plus because of this Batocera firmware! I do like the 35XX Plus but I wish they had given it a dual set of speakers instead of just one. They don't have to continue to make these vertical handhelds look exactly like the original Game Boy. They can add there own twist to it by adding a set of stereo speakers, that's why I like the 405V.
Just scored the RG35XXH for 49.03 from your link with free shipping! Thanks Russ! I plan on setting this up, playing it for a bit and gift to a friend as I don't really need another handheld the Steam Deck oled is my daily.
A bit off topic but I couldn't help but notice your CRT in the back. How do you get it to cycle through game footage like that? I saw that in Super Potato and it's been getting me curious.
I think if you set up emulation station on a raspberry pi it does that in attract mode. I only say that cause that's what it does when running it on my steam deck. Edit: He said in the video Batocera does it as well.
THANKS RUSS; current competitive lower cost of the Ambernic-H will now become a fine buddy to my existing Miyoo Mini+ so HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME and excellent review all around my retro gaming YT friend!!

Thanks for the video! your summary and conclusion couldn't have been clearer, which is why I finally pulled the trigger and bought the H version. Can wait for it to arrive and am looking forward to your updated Batocera setup guide ;)
I would love a full setup guide! I'm working through it now for my rg35xxh but I'm sure i've missed things.
Thanks for the vids!
Thanks a lot. I have been waiting a lot to see this device ready. I have the plus one but I am going to take better the H version.
Ordered RG35XX H for 51$ on current sale on Aliexpress in official store and now looking forward to it 😀
just purchased my 35xx H and cant wait for a set up guide! amazing work thanks a lot
Late the video but just ordered my rg35xx h and would LOVE a batocera set up guide - your guides are always so detailed and easy to follow
I can't get over the Ahpeh Escahpeh pronunciation XD

I just watched the whole video and I have no idea what word you’re even talking about.

He got you, he wanted comments about it.
Thank you for your great timing! Bought the H model for $49.76 (clear white with a hard case) on ali.
Glad I watched! I wanted to get one of these systems for my daughter to play in the car (or me on the train) and now I know to get the H. Thanks!
Appreciate the time and effort to make these in-depth videos! I really love Batocera v40 on my RG35XX-H and with having a large collection, that screensaver tip is top notch! Such an easy and great way to find and play a random game!
Sorry to bother you. Could you tell me if it has any of the Sega Genesis PGA golf games?
Thanks
@@earthsucks9555 Yes. My collection has 5 PGA golf games. They are: PGA European Tour, PGA Tour 96, PGA Tour Golf, PGA Tour Golf II, and PGA Tour Golf III. Hope this helps.
Based on your previous review, I got the rg35xx h from Ali a couple of days ago, knowing that custom firmware will come and make a good handheld, a great handheld. Thank you for showcasing and reviewing the firmware. Can't wait to dive right into it.
Please do a setup guide for RG35XX-H
Yeah i def want to see one since i'm buying one
@selfmademusic206 so, I haven't seen one yet but I got mine setup with batocera.
1. Flash batocera using rufus
2. Install on RG35XX-H
3. Look for share partition when sd is plugged into computer, if you can't find one, use disk manager to assign the partition a letter
4. Make sure to put game zips in their individual system folders, not just the roms folder
5. Google is your friend, good luck, it took me almost 3 weeks to figure it out.
Yesterday I bought the RG 35XX h and I hope that I will not be disappointed. Greetings from Poland
This is the video I wish existed a month ago
Thanks, good work. Currently using muOS to play AM2R having a blast
Anbernic have updated the stock software and it's improved the experience for me. I've used Skraper to add box art and it looks suprisingly good. I'm waiting for Batocera/Garlic to improve a bit more before I make the switch. Surprised how much I like the 'H'. Great vid Russ !
Great timing of the video per your post, picked up the H for $52
Never have I ever been so sold on a product before until I watched this video. I immediately went and bought the RG35XX H. Found it on Aliexpress for $50! I am so excited to get this.
Just got this i took advantage of the sale ! Thanks for the video Russ!
We dont deserve russ!
His videos are just way too good. He got me knee deep in retroemulation and i wouldnt want it any other way. Keep kickin ass Russ!!
I've got both and i'm quite happy using the updated stock OS as it offers the best performance imo.
What is the easiest/quickest way to get that on a new SD card? Is it one file to download? Or is it a load of file renaming/Google drive stuff
@@curt6525 , Download the 15gb file and burn it on a new SD card , add your own bios and roms
Also I have 1 card for the os and second for roms currently
@@curt6525 The second SD should
work fine with the new FW
There will be a 4” screen version soon.
@@ericxiao4120 need to be 4.5
Tbh, the screen doesn’t feel very small. Especially because its meant for retro games *mostly*
there is the anbernic arc and retroid pocket 3 plus at a cheaper rate than the 4 (though id still get the 4 at least)
@@JohnDoe-pe9ewI'll give you that one...but I'll still take larger when ever I can get it personally.
Love this channel! I am a 46 year old kid at heart and this guy is speaking my language, lol. I just purchased my "H" model.
Lol I ordered my ambenic rg35xxh and it should be coming tomorrow, great timing
Found myself coming back to this video after my unit arrived today, as a huge nerd I love the software explanations
really love Anbernic but I'm really torn between a little more expensive handhelds
RG35XX H is actually about on par with an X55 or RGB10Max3. It is smaller, but the CFW has been supported better on the RG35XX series, so even though it has a weaker processor, it seems better optimized.
I agree, I don't think Anbernic has hit the right points value-wise vs. competition since 2022.
Love the videos you convinced me to get my first emulator in the RG35XX + which arrives this week, I would love a start up guide for a first timer if possible
it’s all on his site he mentions this
Oh man. The rg35xx is so good. Got the original myself and love it for arcade games and sega cd/ps1
I'm torn between the mm+ or rg35xx + damn
Trigger pulled, signed, sealed & bought! Giddy like a child at Christmas, and thank you for the great review!
Can't wait for a RG35XX H vs Miyoo A30 comparison in April!
@@msrpmusic303 HOW THE DS
The RG35XX H is the successor to the RG351 P, and has the WiFi, Bluetooth, and HDMI out that the 351 P was meant to have but they ended up not putting into it. I feel it's really matured as a handheld in refinement and shows how much Anbernic can shine in this category and price point. 😁
Nice. Now I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should get the Anbernic RG35XX H or the Powkiddy RGB30 as my first ever and will probably be my only handheld :'))
Same here…
Same! What did you go with?
@@Level30Games Still haven't bought one, but I think I might still pick the RGB30 because it sounds better in the long run

The last chinese Handled i bought was the Retroid Pocket 2, a few years ago!
mewithoutyou! Incredible band!
And I use it to play GTA Vice City and Half Life :-)
I’m looking to get one of these, been doing my research but I’m new to all this so I will be waiting for that set up video! Thanks!
Bro nice shirt. Great band my dude!
I came here to say the same thing! Fantastic band!
Bless up russ big up from jamaica
Just scored the RG35XXH for 49.03 from your link with free shipping! Thanks Russ! I plan on setting this up, playing it for a bit and gift to a friend as I don't really need another handheld the Steam Deck oled is my daily.
What do you find yourself emulating on the OLED Steam Deck?
@@beigehero3338 I really haven't played a whole lot of anything, just really fun seeing the capabilities and all the systems the Deck can emulate.
I never thought about using something before gifting it to someone. That’s a brilliant idea.
