But honestly have not had a good experience with it due to having a faulty screen. My daily driver for taking out and about ended up being a DS Lite with R4. Super cheap, about as cheap as most of the devices on this list. The games are made for short bursts in mind, as well as the built-in sleep function on close. It's snappy with fast boot times (I hate how slow a modded 3DS is). And the DS library is so underrated, and I honestly might prefer it to the GBA library (and even 3DS) as far as depth and variety.

Thanks for being there every step of the way on my handheld journey, Russ. I first got into them in 2021 and your channel was the first I came across before buying and the perfect resource for finding what I wanted to buy. Three years and six handhelds later I’m still constantly struck by how professional, helpful, and entertaining your vids are. Your knowledge has made me a master of all things handheld. At this point friends are coming to me for recommendations because of how much I’ve learned from you. They’ll ask me to load custom firmware for them too and so many of them are playing because of me and therefore because of you. Thanks so much man, I hope you and your family are well
The A30 is near perfect for me. As someone who grew up in the NES days, that form factor and the dpad feel so natural. I actually prefer the recessed stick and Spruce works well. If it didn’t get so warm, it would be a 10/10 in my book.
As always, thank you for posting! Happy gaming! A30 with SpruceOS clears all for me. The form factor and portability coupled with the good retro performance is so good.
I absolutely love my Miyoo A30 with Spruce. The form factor is perfect for my big hands too. Cant wait to see what Spruce has coming down the line. I also don’t seem to get much heat transfer. Barely gets warms at all. I expected more but it’s not bad at all. Plus it’s getting to be winter so if anything I’ll enjoy the warmth 😂. I wish Etsy had more custom button options. I’m tempted to buy another one I like it so much
I actually grabbed a Miyoo Mini Plus after seeing a few of your videos on it. It was on sale for 27€ and it's easily one of the best purchases I've done so far as my very first retro handheld. I really love the fact that it doesn't have fans, so no noises other than the speaker, and the form factor is awesome, as I really love vertical handhelds, since it's easier to be a couch potato with them imho. The fact that a sub-40€ handheld can actually run PS1 games as flawlessly as it does, especially when I remember emulation struggling to run the games I had ten/fifteen years ago (Valkyrie Profile for example was miserable to get the audio running properly in ePSXe back then) on a machine that was more powerful than it is just mindblowing. Kudos to the Onion OS team, to Miyoo for making this banger of a retro gaming value, the peeps working on emulators that help keep these legacies alive, and of course, you for making these videos.
The Miyoo Mini/+ has definitely something addictive, I just bought a RG40XXV to have a bigger screen and maybe a more comfortable handeld, but i keep coming back to the Miyoo Mini +, its better dpad/buttons, Onion OS and form factor makes it really unique.
We think alike-- I don't own the RG28XX, but have the others. Trimui Smart is just so pocketable and comfortable for larger hands. I use it more than my Retroid.
Ignoring the chip controversy, the Xu Mini M is imo the best mini portable to date. Has a full controller in it, great and bright screen, dual sd card, audio jack, good heat dispersion, and even runs *Portmaster* (with PlumOS) and a smoother UI while being truly pocketable. The Miyoo A30 is terrific as well but its lack of second analog stick, no bluetooth audio or audio jack (the xu mini works well with a dongle), dimmer screen, heat, and lack of ports (outside very few) made it just lose in my daily travel game device. Still, cramming wifi and rumble into it and still being that small with an analog stick is crazy. And it is smaller than the Xu Mini. Even with a grip addition it's still very pocketable while the Xu becomes too big with it (though it doesn't really need it). But while Spruce is a terrific custom community OS it can't fix all the base software issues (like the lag) that PlumOS can on the XU bc the XU is based on amberelec. Still, we are in a great time for tiny devices that can truly play your whole retro catalog with minimal concessions. And being $50 or less is also great. Imo both are top tier and it really depends on your preferences.
Thank you for this brief comparison. I have a Miyoo Mini and Mini Plus that are amazing devices, but I don’t use them because I don’t find them comfortable to hold or use the shoulder buttons. I think I’m gonna get the Xu Mini because better screen and less heat.
@@M4staBruce Definitely suggest it. As well I'd replace the SD it came with with a better quality one for Plum OS and to use a second USB card for your roms (it has two slots).
@@M4staBruce They originally said mid October and still no updates so I wouldn't hold my breath. As well they're switching to an Allwinner chip and that may take more time to get good OS on it. For sub $50 I personally think it's worth getting the XU mini now. But I will be probably getting the M28 (it's what they plan to call it) eventually
Thank you for making this video, this is EXACTLY the kind of video I've been looking for. Ever since picking up the RG28XX, the only other handheld I've purchased was a second 28XX because the screen on the first one got cracked - despite owning several more powerful handhelds like the Odin Pro and Retroid Pocket 2S, something about "tiny pocketable device" combined with "runs a dedicated Linux operating system" really sells the whole idea of a fun and pleasant-to-use handheld way better than anything else I've owned. Love seeing the insight on other mini devices!
Russ, my younger brother has always recommended you, ever since he bought the RP2S based on your reviews. Thank you for your awesome content, and I hope this channel keeps going!
I had to take a family member to a doctor's appointment where I was going to be in the waiting room for a few hours. I took my RG28XX and time just flew by. It was cool to just throw that in my pocket and I had a really fun time-killer.
I prefer the RG28XX over the A30. I had 2 Miyoo A30 and just gave them away to friends, the thing gets too hot on the back, battery life sucks, front plate gets off the device and the ink on it fades after a week of gameplay. Spruce is great and all, but with no Onion is really hard to keep it. Also, I found the 28XX screen a bit bigger plus battery life is amazing with 8 hours. I bought a grey/beige one for $48 with good quality hard case and a pair of glass screen protectors plus the silicon cover. They don't bother me at all but for some people, the small action buttons is just a matter of time to get used to it
I also found it surprising that the small action buttons offset all those hefty disadvantages of the screen, battery life and heat, plus the 28xx has great alternative OS options too.
I still love my Anbernic 280v and play it often, it's the perfect size and isn't too crampy to play on. It's old but has a decent screen for its size. From this list, the Miyoo Mini is still my favorite.
A little off topic but although I have watched this channel for a number of years, I had never subscribed. But because of what Nintendo is trying to do to this channel, I have subscribed im support of an excellent channel. My bad eyes keep me from playing the small devices, but my computers and tablets are loaded up with retro games.
GKD Pixel would definitely be number one if it wasn't for the price/scarcity. Your minUI guide made it perfect for me. Miyoo Mini will always be a classic and FunKey iconic. Really wish they would make a "Funkey Plus" that would just be .5 inch bigger with USB C
The GKD Pixel is my favorite: metal shell, metal buttons, decent battery life, perfectly-placed and clicky shoulder buttons that aren't too sensitive (unlike the Miyoo Mini), and a vertical layout for one-handed gaming. The only downsides for me are the system limitations (e.g., MinUI doesn't support ColecoVision), and that I'll likely no longer be able to buy another, unless GameKiddy makes a Pixel 2.
Russ, I think it would be so cool if you did a video like this but tailored to people with big hands, or a focus on hand comfort. I personally LOVE tiny consoles but playing these for more than 30 minutes my fingers are cramped or even in pain
I have the same issue. The Rg406v is too cramped even. Somehow the RG28Xx is playable with fingertips, but one device keeps my huge hands happy for now. RP4pro w/the $16 grip. It's the best big hand option in retro handhelds in my opinion
@@chimrichalds81 That's one I've been looking at as well. Needing something to upgrade from my pow Kitty x55. Something with a nice balance of smallest size but comfy for my big hands. The RP5 mini is one I've looked at too
I have large hands, and the TrimUI Smart is the one I pick up and play most, easily. The screen on the A30 is so much better. That says something about the ergonomics of the TrimUI... My mind says A30, but my actual preference is for TrimUI Smart. Comfortable in the pocket, insanely light (you won't know you're carrying it) and just a joy to play. Dpad and controls are accurate as well. I'm also a fan of OS's that are visually appealing-- I love the look of Batocera when playing games on my tv. But my TrimUI has MinUI on it. No mucking about with settings, it just works.
There's a reason that the miyoo mini and miyoo mini plus are the only handhelds where I purchased every single color slowly before things became popular (obviously I got the yellow, and the plus ones, later). I knew it was going to have more longevity with not only its form factor, but onions os continues amazing support. Best operating system we've gotten from the community so far. They would eventually get very popular and now have changed screen on the mini.. A few of mine are different versions. V2, v3, v4. I wish I didn't gift my v1 to my cousin.. sticky buttons or not! Haha So I say all that to say, it's the first one I wanted to preserve for my collection with every color like people do gameboys. For the price i got all of them for over time, I never regret this decision and am currently working on a custom display. The reddit community gave me crap for it.. but I never got more than one per drop, and did so over time..I also use and customized them all.
I was extremely close to buying a GKD Pixel about a week ago. it was pretty much the perfect size for having on my person at work so I could pull it out during lunch and such to play Pokemon or Mega man battle network. But ultimately I decided I didn't need to have it on my person, I could keep it in the truck (where I eat) and the RG35xxSP was just such a gut punch of nostalgia for me, and I really wanted back something close to what was stolen from me back in junior high school... So I have that on the way, Hopefully within the next 2 weeks I should have it~
I'm such a stickler for scaling nowadays that it's hard for me to use the RG280V/M screen now :( It's still a great little handheld, my wife loves it (she plays Dr. Mario on it).
280v still holds up really well, although Adam Image doesn't have the quick savestate+shutdown/quick resume feature which is really nice to have on a pocketable, pick-up-and-go kind of thing.
The a30 is crazy comfortable for me! The L/R around the corners are just perfectly responsive. I do have smaller hands though. My fried has a MM+ and I think that really is the ultimate small handheld IF you don't need it to fit in your pocket. Crisp screen, great weight... I'm probably buying one around Xmas! 🙃
I love seeing these videos the most, because i feel like im updated in the retro devices scene. Personally I still rock my rg351p and m from your first videos with the still awesome amberelec. And i also ended up buying miyoo mini (and also plus) and even steamdeck because of your videos. But still i enjoy knowing the diferences between new devices and your opinion is always on point and very welcome. Thanks so much
still not the replacement for the gb micro that i‘m craving 😮 it was the smallest usable handheld i ever had in my hands. 2 inch screen, sturdy build, minimal but great buttons, just a fantastic little thing. battery life was not the best with a flash card, but i played this tiny thing so much because i had it always on me. it fit the 5th pocket of my jeans, but still had usable buttons. and the screen was big enough for most things. i wouldn’t play games on it with lots of text to read but for all those pick up and play for a couple of minutes it was just right. i played metroid, wario ware, tetris, stuff like that. and i wish i would still have it because prices are out of control at this point. right now i do all my handheld gaming on my n3ds which is great and my next device will be a vita. but if someone would release a usable handheld in a proper gb micro format, i would order one on the spot. ❤
Bravo Zulu lad! Bloody brilliant and totally agree with the list although I might switch 2 and 3 with each other in terms of ranking. I freaking love my Miyoo Minis. I've three and I'm getting the other two colourways. I just can't help myself. You're right, the best handheld is the one that you have with you and the Miyoo Mini nailed it man.
I actually bought the GKD Pixel a few months back as my first retro handheld, definitely in part due to this channel. It's a shame they aren't making more.
The Miyoo Mini feels like an ACTUAL Nintendo product (perhaps even better in terms of quality); purposefully built to play anything up to PS1/NDS. It does so flawlessly with great controls, great screen, and software (OnionOS is just *chef's kiss*). I have the Steam Deck as well, fantastic device! but it's too unwieldy to pull out during train- or bus rides. I only play on that one once I reach my destinations and have downtime. During actual travel however, The Miyoo Mini is all I really need... It is sized to be comfortable...-ish, yet tiny enough to be EXTREMELY pocketable, convenient and "available" no matter where you are. I even bring it on hiking or bike packing trips where packing space is excessively minimal.
Steam Deck and a tiny handheld. It’s the perfect combination, and to me nothing else is needed! But whether the next size category up should be considered alongside the “tiny” category is definitely debatable. You certainly COULD put them in your pocket, but how ridiculous that looks or feels would probably depend on the pocket.
I sold all the retroconsoles I had and only kept these: - Myioo mini plus (I'll never get rid of that icon), - PSVita (a classic that everyone should have) and... - Smartphone Galaxy SPlus + Gamepad Gamsir Galileo G8 + Retroarch to emulate the entire planet. 😅
You'll be glad you did. I've owned 4 of those devices, and the Smart is still the one I play most. Loved the Mini, but horizontal designs are more comfortable for me. Even though the A30 has a better screen, the Smart is just comfortable and enjoyable to play.
Yeah, I don't understand what everyone sees in the Miyoo Mini. I have relatively small hands and they still cramp up when using it after 5 mins lol. I haven't touched my Miyoo Mini ever since I got my RG28xx. I still like my Miyoo Mini+ but haven't touched it since I got my RG40XXV. The Miyoo A30 peaks my interest though, looks really good 👍🏼
Something that helped me with the heat on the Miyoo A30 was a grip shield. Protects the system while you're on the go, and improves grip and heat while playing it. It only added a little bit of bulk.
Crazy how I literally just bought a miyoo mini a week ago and got it set up and running with onion OS using your guide. It's gonna be my secondary pocketable handheld to use at work or on the go. Bought that hardshell case too from your recommendations on the written guide. Thanks for the help man.
I bought a Miyoo A30 and a RG28XX, I end up donating the A30 because I hated the d-pad, I had a lot of false input with playing Apotris and the Game & Watch collection's mini games, but I love the RG28XX yes I wish the buttons were bigger but I can play Apotris and every game without issue, they're smaller but a lot better than the A30. Furthermore the NDS works better on the RG28XX the games are less blurry and more fluid. Russ also said he doesn't like the look of the 28XX but I really like the withe one with purple buttons I think it's kind of adorable.
I have the Miyoo Mini Plus but I was looking for one that's more pocketable. Literally just ordered a Miyoo Mini v4 last night. I'm glad this video backs up my choice
I love that the onionOS sdcard can be moved between the Miyoo Mini and Miyoo Mini Plus. Pop it in the Mini when you're on the go, move it to the Plus when you're home and want a slightly more comfy set up!
I am glad that I bought the Miyoo Mini 2 years ago already at that time they were about 86000krw which is around 79usd at that time and now the Miyoo V4 is around 50000krw or 60000krw which is 50usd or less than that. Is an amazing console that traveled with me since then. I just love it. Awesome video as usual 🙌🏻💯🔥
At first I thought I'd be sated after grabbing up a Mini Plus, but now I'm watching videos about mini handhelds for retro games... while playing on the Miyoo Mini+ I think I might have new Hobby for watching Retro game videos.
I love this! I always want this topic just to play with something while I wait for my friends to show up... a bus ride, that kind of thing. Also always like the TrimUI model S.
I ate 2 meals with 3 rice while watching this.. no snack haha... Love your vids man! Don't let that N bring you down ❤ I actually like the GKD Pixel for 1 hand jrpgs, even though I prefer landscape handhelds
I have 3 out of the 5 ones you showed and I agree with everything, including the great surprise that was the magic x mini. It is so confy, I can play some dreamcast games fine on it (I was training for the release of mvc2 on it)and it is overall the best small device for me if you include the possibilities that the analog sticks adds to the device. I am a bit let down by the myioo a30, especially after getting used to the miyoo mini. It has a lot to be a great device but for an example, syncthing never works.
Great video as always! Just ordered a miyoo mini last night lol bought the rg353m about 6 months ago and I really like it but it’s just not quite as grab and go as I’d like. I keep seeing miyoo mini content and I just think that’s the experience I’m really looking for. Ultimately I’m leaning toward the retroid pro 5 as a potential main device (miss the oled of display of my switch and want something that can also do gcb and ps2 for at home/longer trips) with the miyoo mini for on the go. Really excited about it! Yet another video confirming I’m on the right track for where I want to be for portable gaming! Thx for all your time and hard work. Here’s to hoping for something with the form factor of these devices with a good display, controls AND WIFI…I feel like things are sooo close but not quite there yet.
I thought the Miyoo Mini was the end-all be-all for me on tiny handhelds, but then I got a GKD Pixel. The size fits me better. I love the metal body. So I'm not worried about breaking it like the Miyoo. I remember seeing people dropping their Miyoo and breaking them and very low heights. The Pixel really does have a nice and premium feel.
Out of these 5, I own 3. The Miyoo Mini V1 that I bought at launch, the Miyoo A30, and the GKD Pixel. The Miyoo Mini is the most charming, no doubt about it, but it still is too big for my pockets along with my wallet or phone. The A30 I got just too play with Spruce and it's actually really nice, but it's my bang around device. But my every day carry is the GKD Pixel. It is basically a smaller, metal MM. I've finished more games on it than probably any other handheld I own. It's my number 1, even with its caveats.
Brilliant, as always, Russ! You are the definitive go-to for the most comprehensive and considerate perspective on this thriving retro gaming hobby. So grateful for you and your work, you not only give me permission to enjoy the hobby in deeper, more meaningful ways for myself, but also to share the joy with others. Barely gets warms at all. I expected more but it’s not bad at all. Plus it’s getting to be winter so if anything I’ll enjoy the warmth 😂. I wish Etsy had more custom button options. I’m tempted to buy another one I like it so much
I had a GB micro that died on me this year. I got an A30 to fill the gap and I am in love. It was a rough start but it grew on me. It’s got rumble!
I really love the look of the a30. It looks comfortable and has an 80s nostalgic appearance.
Excellent video, Russ! Thank you. Here’s my ranking as a dude with L/XL hands:
1. Trimui Smart
2. Miyoo A30
3. Anb RG28XX
4. Miyoo Mini
Honorable Mention - Magic X (Too bulky in the pocket)
Honorable Mention - GKD Pixel (Too small)
We think alike-- I don't own the RG28XX, but have the others. Trimui Smart is just so pocketable and comfortable for larger hands. I use it more than my Retroid.
@@iowamvI have the RG28XX and it's AMAZING. It's smaller buttons, don't really bother me at all. It's pretty much perfect imo
Somehow the intro + music is really comforting 😊
@@arthurdurham awesome. Thank you. It looks like they might be coming out with a + version any day now that fixes a few things?
@@M4staBruce They originally said mid October and still no updates so I wouldn't hold my breath. As well they're switching to an Allwinner chip and that may take more time to get good OS on it.
For sub $50 I personally think it's worth getting the XU mini now. But I will be probably getting the M28 (it's what they plan to call it) eventually
@@arthurdurham appreciate it!! What do you think about the 35XXSP?
They don't bother me at all but for some people, the small action buttons is just a matter of time to get used to it
Yeah I was surprised to see the A30 instead of the 28XX on the list
I also found it surprising that the small action buttons offset all those hefty disadvantages of the screen, battery life and heat, plus the 28xx has great alternative OS options too.
Cool story bro
I still love my Anbernic 280v and play it often, it's the perfect size and isn't too crampy to play on. It's old but has a decent screen for its size. From this list, the Miyoo Mini is still my favorite.
I use Retroid Pocket 2S as my primary and Miyoo A30 (spruce) as my pick up and go. Definitely use my A30 way more!
Same. RP2S is still amazing and the A30 fits great even in a suit jacket.
I don't know what it is but the little shake you do after taking things in/out your pockets is my favorite thing :P
I didn't know that GKD stopped making the Pixel. I'm glad I got one when I did
A little off topic but although I have watched this channel for a number of years, I had never subscribed.
Trimui smart is such an easy portable to take anywhere. GBA seems to be the sweet spot so I play a lot of Nintendo classics. And yes it does have wifi
I tried A30 and pixel, end up keeping the pixel, love the metal feel
The RP5 mini is one I've looked at too
@@therealJeXus the rp5 and mini excite me too. Is love to know what you get
I have large hands, and the TrimUI Smart is the one I pick up and play most, easily.
So I have that on the way, Hopefully within the next 2 weeks I should have it~
I can’t believe the 280v didn’t make your top 5…I love mine so much
I'm such a stickler for scaling nowadays that it's hard for me to use the RG280V/M screen now :( It's still a great little handheld, my wife loves it (she plays Dr.
Thanks so much
videos like this kill me because i end up wanting every device you go over 😂 awesome work as always!!
still not the replacement for the gb micro that i‘m craving 😮 it was the smallest usable handheld i ever had in my hands.
It’s always a pleasure to watch your reviews! ❤ 😊
I think I will be buying retroid pocket 5 as my first retro handheld. I hope it will be good, can't wait for your review on this one
Russ: Showcases the Chrono Cross opening FMV on the #1 device pick
[ Everyone liked that ]
The miyoo a30 is my perfect small handheld. With the addition of spruce firmware it's perfect in my opinion.
One of the best features of the Miyoo Mini's size is that it fits perfectly in a case made for playing cards.
I sold all the retroconsoles I had and only kept these:
- Myioo mini plus (I'll never get rid of that icon),
- PSVita (a classic that everyone should have) and...
- Smartphone Galaxy SPlus + Gamepad Gamsir Galileo G8 + Retroarch to emulate the entire planet.
😅
Ótima lista! Vc tem bom gosto.
Big up Russ 💥 Great video as per 🙂 MagicX XU Mini M ⭐ Far from perfect but it's my favourite tiny handheld alongside the og Miyoo Mini.
Man, your videos are really cozy
The Miyoo Mini just has something about it, I don't know exactly what it is, but that's the one which interests me the most.
I just ordered a TrimUI Smart yesterday. I really wanted a XU Mini M but I will wait for the updated version
You'll be glad you did. I've owned 4 of those devices, and the Smart is still the one I play most. Loved the Mini, but horizontal designs are more comfortable for me. Even though the A30 has a better screen, the Smart is just comfortable and enjoyable to play.
The A30 has been the perfect choice for me. The Miyoo Mini is just too small of a vertical handheld for me. Makes my hands hurt after a few mins lol
The Miyoo A30 peaks my interest though, looks really good 👍🏼
You've mastered visually appealing product explainer videos
Started bopping my head to your intro man! Nice lol
Russ also said he doesn't like the look of the 28XX but I really like the withe one with purple buttons I think it's kind of adorable.
maaaan I've been wanting that yellow miyoo mini for SO long, thanks for the heads up about their stock being back, grabbed one.
I have the Miyoo Mini Plus but I was looking for one that's more pocketable. Literally just ordered a Miyoo Mini v4 last night. I'm glad this video backs up my choice
The a30 is my traveling device. So cheaply purchased and loaded with games. I like the rg35xxh too but the a30 is more expendable.
I'm excited for the refreshed Magicx Mini M that should be releasing next month. Chip drama aside, it is my favorite mini handheld.
At first I thought I'd be sated after grabbing up a Mini Plus, but now I'm watching videos about mini handhelds for retro games... while playing on the Miyoo Mini+ I think I might have new Hobby for watching Retro game videos.
This is what I was looking for. So much choice and OS and other specs. So I'm gonna see.
Dude that Japanese Dismemberment Plan shirt goes crazy
I just ordered a Miyoo Mini V4 earlier this week. I have the MM+ but something about the mini is just so charming.
This is just so incredibly detailed and useful! Thank you.
I'm probably alone in this, but I hope we get a newer Miyoo Max/Pocket Go V2. Five years later and it's still my most pocketable 3.5 inch handheld.
Another great video! What about the $100-$150 range? Can you please make a top 5 video for that range, and maybe for $150 - $200 as well?
Here’s to hoping for something with the form factor of these devices with a good display, controls AND WIFI…I feel like things are sooo close but not quite there yet.
the white a30 is the best retro design i've seen on a handheld.
The GKD Pixel is so underrated i wish it were cheaper😢
I knew I could count on you Russ, I was just thinking of getting one of these for a Christmas present!
If the Miyoo Mini + had hdmi and bluetooth, it would blow everything else out of the water. Almost perfect, so close!
As someone with no Nintendo nostalgia it's actually refreshing to see all of the gameplay being from other companies.
Love your vids, Russ! You upload so frequently that all these snacks are gonna make us fat very quickly...
"if you're somebody who has a real job" made me chuckle in an unexpected way hehe. i still chuckle as i type this.
Kind of a cool category. I take my gameboy micro everywhere and still love that thing
Had the RG35xxh for the better part of the last year and loved how portable it was, and using batocera it was really performant and fun to customize!
These kinds of retro handhelds make tremendous gifts, and I have custom tailored several now for others and enjoy the gift that keeps on giving as we share the love and fun. #noninjasnoproblems
I love when Russ comes out with cheap handheld videos because I'm cheap even if I do own a steam deck already lol
