    Very interesting and useful video. Thank you. I'm not sure of one thing. Do you make wet sanding just after the primer layer ? Or can you do it after the final glossy paint layer ? If it's the case, doesn't wet sanding ruin the glossy paint ?

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  4 месяца назад

      Wetsanding should really only be done on the clear coat as it’s the last surface, BUT if you get trash or junk in primer or paint wetsanding & recoating should be performed

      @@Darkwingdad Thank you. So if you do wet sanding on the clear coat, what is the delay ? Because paint needs some time to dry and get hard and reflective, sometimes 2 weeks sometimes more. So do you wait 2 or 3 weeks after clear coat painting to do wet sanding ?

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  4 месяца назад

      @@SECTION5120 no if your coats are laid down properly 36-48 hours you can wetsand. If you buff/polish you want to make sure your using a body shop safe compound so certain solvents don’t get in & create solvent pop (tiny holes) paint can take up to 30 days to gas & cure but wetsanding can be performed much sooner than that

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  5 месяцев назад

      All you need to worry about is the top layer, especially if using rattle cans orange peel is inevitable. You can wetsand the base coat but you’ll need to add another coat or two on top bc when you sand it it will leave minor scratches & discoloration. Best to focus on the clear as that’s the last layer & most important.

    Earlier this year, I was wetsanding a 3d printed helmet to remove the "spider veins" and "orange peel" texture in preparation to clear coat it as high as 7000 grit. It was so smooth, the water sheened off and it was showing caustics on the surface of another area. However, that's where I went too high and when it came to clear coating the helmet, I had to go back and do it over again. It was too smooth.
    At least now I just need to get some liquid compound and finish when I do the next helmet again.

      @@braintrust12 you can’t without damaging the pigmentation, that’s why you don’t. Wetsanding & refinement is for clear coat. Everytime you spray paint on whether it’s with a can or a gun there is ALWAYS going to be orange peel. On pigmented paint if you wetsand it your hooking to have to repaint it & literally just adding the orange peel back on. That’s why you only do it to clear coat bc you can buff and polish it. I'm going to control the humidity and heat using an esp32 based Lora network depending on what I'm printing. Abs for the main reason. I want to print a few cnc machines and voron kits to make money to reinvest in my plan I was telling you about. I'm hoping to have six printers by the fall going full tilt printing mpcnc, voron kits and other things I can sell like helmets and neopixel related lamps and other custom coded iot stuff. @@Darkwingdad hey man. I have a favor to ask. I'm going to pick up some more stuff to process prints with and I'm wondering what kind of canned aerosol paint and clear coat I should buy to play around with before I go and get airbrush station, I'm somewhat familiar with car painting as my father was a hobbyist body work guy. I have all the sand paper and super fine files I think I need to start. I also have my workshop fitted with a central air compressor system because it's quite large and used to be a cabinet workshop so I updated the whole system last year when we bought the new house. The mini airbrush guns can't tap off of that somehow can they? They come with a compressor of their own I believe. I'm getting ahead of myself asking that.
      I spent about 10 hours the past week working on a piece that looks great as is because I want a matte finish. It's a lamp base for an iot neopixel lamp with a million effects. They cost 50 a pop to make and I'm giving a bunch away to drum up some local word of mouth interest. Can I use a small orbital sander on them as they have thick walls and I'm not going for the finish I plan to practice at getting with the helmets?
      Any help would be greatly appreciated brother. I'd like to thank you as well for putting the darkwing duck theme song in my head for the past month as well hahahaha
