Early Modern (the 1660's was the last time the plague came to England- their clothes & headwear are clearly 17th c), but otherwise, yeah- beachy waves & modern makeup was *not* the look of the time- they could have just styled her hair in a simple bun...
No, today the same accusations exist. It just moved from witch to racist, homophobe, anti-vaxx, conservative, alt-right, far-right, national socialist, anti-progressive...etc. The same witch hunting exists today, and while people have yet to be strapped to a pyre, people lose their lively hoods for ideological reasons. Same BS going on in society. Nothing has changed.
Today the equivalent of a witch is different, its nazi, far right, misogynist, racist, sexist and all the ists and isms. Modern day Salem is twitter and those are their "witches"
"refusing to lay with her landlord"..... They didnt have the concept of "landlord" back then. Back then, she was property, if you wanted to be correct, it should have said "serf refused to lay with her lord".....there is quite a lot written about it in fact, there was even "procedure" to follow on how to obtain your "prize".... "Well, here’s a direct quote from Andreas Capellanus' 'A Treatise on Courtly Love': “If you should, by some chance, fall in love with a peasant woman, be careful to puff her up with lots of praise and then, when you find a convenient opportunity, do not hold back but take your pleasure and embrace her by force. For you can hardly soften their outward inflexibility so far that they will grant you their embraces quietly or permit you to have the solaces you desire unless you first use a little compulsion as a convenient cure for their shyness. We do not say these things, however, because we want to persuade you to love such women, but only so that, if through lack of caution you should be driven to love them, you may know, in brief compass, what to do.” Since it’s in the Code of Chivalry, it seems rather likely that it was comonplace." I think it would be safe to say that he wouldnt have to go through the act of calling her a witch and all that, he would have just forced himself on her and called it a day. He is a lord after all, and she is just a filthy peasant woman, a serf in his estate, no less. Of course accusations will be made anyhow.
Yea the landlord could've just raped her and/or evicted her instead of asking beforehand (considerate) and giving her an opportunity to work off her debt (helpful). She could've also been jailed for not paying her debts which did happen in those times. Or she could be accused of being a witch, imprisoned and tortured. She should've just slept with the landlord, get pregnant, bam no more rent, possibly a raise in station i.e. marriage. Worst case she gets 18 years child support. Problems solved (joking).
Your wrong the concept of landlord is verry old. In Netherland we had landlords in the middle ages who where called landheer in Dutch. That's also a littarly translation from the word landlord. A landlord was a noble person who had sovereign land. And it doesn't matter what rank of noble he or she was a duke or a count all could be landlords.
@@korstiaanakse1 Ok. "landlord" might have been a term, but the concept of what I was saying was the same, right? The people and all of their stuff were property of the "landlord". They had limited rights, blah blah blah? Or no. How wrong am I? Because your country might be the one instance that can show that I am not entirely correct, but I think its a one off. The rest of Europe has a different concept in regards to that. My sources were not my own words, or words that I learned when growing up. I quoted directly from the source. From people that gave accounts from hundreds of years ago. You cant tell me that I am wrong. Maybe in your one part of the world. That still doesnt make me wrong. I suppose it makes me not entirely and fully right.
@@marshaanthony4368 At least in the modern age women have done it to themselves. Women chase the top 20% of men, and when those same women are essentially tossed aside after they're used by those top 20, they complain that there are no good men. Women don't want an average man, they wait and hold out for someone who doesn't exist. Social media helped women wreck themselves, hence why polls indicate women are the most unhappy as they've ever been.

Gotta love how perfect this woman's hair and makeup is in medieval times while living in poverty.

If the landlord is in charge of everyone's rent, why not just kill him? Why go after a woman who just lost her husband
Because she is weak and alone. An easy target. People are cowards.
@Guillermo Suarez you are right and I hate it.
Because she said no to a man and back then anyone different intelligent or outspoken was deemed a witch especially women
@Gemmal Firefly you are also correct and I hate it 😭😭😭
@Pranith agreed

I tried this to my tenant. I’m now typing this from a cell with a phone I hide up my arse. 0/10 don’t recommend.

Now, don't be talking sh!t.
In the real world, the landlord asked for rent and the tenant association accuses the landlord of being the witch

That’s what I like about these channels. They can make a bad movie good.
You can always tell by the 2020 make up in historic movies, haha.
I only watch this movie because of Sean Pertwee.... But I admit, he'd done better ones... 😥🤪
