For those who don't already know, or have not read through all the comments....
In October 2017, Mike's remains were discovered at the closed end of Gardner Road in northern Leon County, five miles from where he grew up; they were identified as his by DNA match with his mother.
In May 2018, Denise Williams was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
In December 2018 she went to trial, and was found guilty on all counts, and in February 2019, she was sentenced to life in prison for the murder, 30 years for the conspiracy to commit first degree murder.
In January 2020, she appealed her conviction and life sentence.
In November 2020, the murder conviction was overturned, but the conspiracy to commit murder conviction was upheld including the 30 year sentence that accompanied it.
She is currently rotting in prison... good riddance!
ETA: Forgot to mention that Mike's mum Cheryl lived to see the trial, the conviction, the appeal and the confirmation that Denise Williams was guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. Cheryl was last interviewed on November 2022 by the Tallahassee Democrat where she lives in a retirement home. She might have looked like a frail old lady but she is clearly a strong willed and determined woman.

This is the one true crime story that truly shattered me. The image of him wet and freezing in the pond and clinging to the reeds in the pond and begging his best friend (who is cheating with his wife ugh) for help when he also realized that his best friend was *shooting at him* just broke me. Thank the stars those two are still in prison and that Mikes body and their entire grotesque plot was uncovered.

Looks like some time after Winchester got arrested, Mike's body has been found. Winchester then confessed the whole thing, that he was ordered by Denise to kill him by rigging his boat. It didn't work cause Mike got ahold of a tree stump, so he shot him in the face with a shotgun instead. He buried Mike in a different location.
The whole kidnapping thing was actually Winchester getting afraid that Denise might rat him out cause they were getting divorced.
They found Mike's body. Denise was sentenced to life. Mike's mom got closure, Brian got 20years and now 21year-old Anslee got the money her dad saved for her.

Last month, Denise's murder conviction was overturned after appeal. The conspiracy charge remains. This means she currently is serving a 30-year sentence rather than a life sentence.

I've watched a lot of criminal trials, but I never listened to victim Impact statements. Until, by chance, I heard this sweet old mother give hers and it broke my heart. She never gave up. The respect and admiration that welled up in me was profound. I wanted to go find her and give her the biggest hug.

As a mother who has lost a child too I can definitely relate as I had those EXACT thoughts when my daughter died... I can also relate to this mother's belief that her son is still alive as even after being told of my daughters death, I believed she was still alive and they'd made a mistake right up until I saw and checked her body myself. Losing one's child is the most horrific and debilitating thing a mother can go through but to have to go through life wondering if your child is dead or alive... I couldn't begin to imagine how truly painful this must be.
I would like to say to this mother; you are such a strong and brave woman, and your continued fight to find out the truth is a testament to the type of wonderful mother you are. I am so very, very sorry that you are going through this. My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family in the hope that you will find out what happened to your son. God bless.

This happened 17 years ago. The new husband confessed to shooting Mike in the face with a 12g shotgun. His body was buried 60 miles away. The police were led to his remains. They planned it together, he was convicted, her trial will start in December 2018. Mikes mother lived to bury her son. The daughter is 19 and attending college. Whew...

I can't believe the insurance company didn't flag these policies for review -- was it a super small insurance company and "the friend" was able to process and approve the life claim himself? How would that not have flagged for insurance fraud once they married if that is the case. Something is strange about that -- insurance companies will not pay out if foul play is involved (on the side of the beneficiary) or even suspected -- because it saves them mad amounts of money to scrutinize this (it's not for the good of their soul, money is the bottom line).

A Florida woman convicted of helping mastermind the killing of her husband nearly two decades ago has been sentenced to life in prison, WJXT reports. A circuit judge sentenced Denise Williams on Wednesday, also giving her 30 years for conspiracy.
Williams was convicted last December of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Brian Winchester, the best friend, testified he had an affair with Williams and shot her husband in December 2000. Winchester helped authorities find Mike Williams' buried body in 2017.
I saw this story on cold cases on tv....it is pretty sad the way a roll model father got killed....and it teaches me how you can't trust no one ...his mom got directed by God

I was wondering why they couldn't get the chance to investigate his close family and friends. Even in missing person, don't you need to find some clues to understand what's really going on?
And after all this things, the daughter never believed her mother was the mastermind. She always believed her father was killed by his best friend, his step father. And he just framed her mother to get way from it. Well, the girl didn't really inherited her mother's brain, that's for sure.
