First video Ive ever watched in my entire life with RUclips which does not have a single dislike. Speaks volumes about your content. Great stuff.
Abhishek, Thanks so much. That's funny you should mention dislikes. After receiving some dislikes on another of my videos (but only a few!) I decided to check out some of the other people in the branding space who I really admire and see if they got dislikes too. They do, and in a higher percentage than me in general - so it made me feel better. Ya got to ignore the haters, but it's hard to do none-the-less.
Philip you are welcome. I had to mention the dislike aspect specifically because many a times Ive seen great content get plenty of dislikes and made me wonder if it was a deliberate algorithm pattern to balance out the likes and dislikes or are people really idiotic enough or am I dumb enough to not understand the reason behind the dislikes. So when I saw this video and after I felt the same feeling about your content I wanted to check how many dislikes I would get to see, and that's when I got pleasantly surprised for the very first time. So thought of mentioning it.
Yeah, they are "real" dislikes I'm afraid. Sometimes I (and everyone else) gets a crappy comment or two to go along with it. Some people just have a bug up their bum and can do nothing but complain. Which is really a shame seeing how YT people are taking real risks, putting in very hard work and putting up valuable content for freakin' free - and some people can only b*tch about it. It's sad. Some people are just takers and will never be makers. - I appreciate your support my friend.
You, GaryVee and Chris Do are my RUclips Idols
Thanks Pitt! This puts me in very good company!
Thanks for this video. I was getting a little discouraged working so much beyond normal hours, but it's nice to know that that's what it takes and I'm on the right track. Several great tips here that I will start implementing and I'll be patient. I've been trying to move up as a Producer and of course looking to get paid a little better. "Do the job you want first, then get promoted".
Chris, Long hours are a sad aspect of the creative industry - and it is all too common. But that's what it takes. It's like if you want to be a doctor- your gotta take the long hours with the territory. Remember though- if the money doesn't eventually follow, move on. There is a company out there that will value you at your worth. Go for it! Good luck.
Just wanted to pass along the good news, I got a promotion to a full Producer! Thanks for the videos and words of encouragement. Definitely helps folks, like myself, in the creative industry keep moving forward.
You should do a video that talks about what it takes to be a creative director and what they do! Great video.
I did! Here it is: ruclips.net/video/Af7Tos7f5_o/видео.html
Thanks for this! I am an aspiring creative director myself and being able to look at these tips to get promoted not omly benefits me now, but also when I'm ready to take the next steps :)

AM, awesome - good luck with your major!
How is it?? Where are you at rn??
Dude, you are too cool, luv the mustache. Thanks for the video.
Awwww, shucks. thx.
I logged these points in a small, orange field notes book. I'm paring everything down into a small poster I can pin beside my desk. I want your points to be there so I keep a clear image of what I need to do, especially on days when I am too entangled in the details. Thank you, Philip.
Make an info graphic of it and send it to me through my website! I'll post it on my FB group! Thx Zoo.
I am amazed that this has only 5K + views
Your content is great!!!!!!
BadKitty, Thanks - help me out and share a video of mine on social - maybe this one! I need the publicity!
I did share it...hopefully my little following gives a little push to the channel
Badcat- thanks so much - you're tops!
Thank you! This really helps me a lot 😀
Sid, Happy to help! Good luck in your design journey.
Great chat Phil but 8.2K views in over a year? Explain please
Mike, It's a niche topic - I have videos with 100,000+ views (one with 1M) and some with just hundreds - it doesnt matter to me. I'm just contributing my knowledge to those who can benefit. Hey, do me a favor - post a link to a couple of my vids on social media - I need your help! Thx bro.
Insightful video as always! What happens when your company doesn't want to see your potential or they're blind sighted because they all come from a marketing background and don't understand design very well?
Willy, then you start shopping your portfolio around and move on. You can advocate for design and make headway - but sometimes you can also be beating your head against the wall for no reason.
Thank you for the advice. It's better to stop and look somewhere else.
Great video. Great background jazz.
Geena, I think this is the only video where I used background music. Do you like that? Most folks don't it seems...
Oh wow, people didn't like it? I loved it, and I love jazz, haha. At first I though my iTunes was on in the background; it's very unobtrusive, and it didn't interfere with your speaking. Clearly it didn't disturb my concentration - if anything, I felt more relaxed and, when I finally noticed the music, I realized why! It's definitely different from your intro/outro music, so maybe that's why it threw people off? I just started watching your videos yesterday - I guess I picked a good one to start with ;) Also, great advice, great recording quality, and you lay things out very succinctly, thank you!
Thanks for the thoughtful critique! I REALLY appreciate it. That's interesting you felt more relaxed wit the music...hmmm.
You're very welcome, no problem! Yeah, something to think about! :D
i love you! thanks so much!
Heart Key, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you? Please share my video with a friend or two! I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
Sure Philip, good content is always of interest between the colleagues
Excellent content, Phillip. I have a BA in Graphic Design and have been a designer for about 10 years. Is there a quantifiable amount of years worth of experience where you see designers transitioning to creative director roles? Obviously portfolio of work, leadership abilities, etc. come in to play, but also curious about timing.
In my experience it takes about 8-10 years to go from Jr.Designer to Designer to Sr. Designer, to Art Director to CD. But I just got a comment the other day from a young woman in a small company who made CD in 4 years. She's freaking out - it's a big role for having only a small amount of experience. Be careful what you wish for....;-)
Swallowed this video with a pinch of salt...

I am just a fresh man who really goal to be a creative director, and my degree isn't related to design or any kind of art fild. However, I love to manage the activity and team, and I am interested in marketing, but I have no idea how to start my career of being creative director, may I ask what would you recommend me to start first as a graduated person? Start work as PR or ?
You need to get training in design and then get a job in design - or some creative field (video, advertising, etc) You work your way up to CD - and are promoted over time to the position from the lower ranks of art directors and senior designers. Hope that helps.
Thank you for this content
Thanks Sid Diaz!
Hi I love your video but I just wanted to know how to become a creative director on film studios? Like what position should someone like me want to start off as?
Thanks Saia! TBH I'm not up on the film industry and how the career paths go there. Might have to find a film industry expert to ask. Sorry!
Thank you for your experience. How could you recommend to contact with your clients/agencies? I haven’t enough orders and searching for the ways to build the client network? Could you tell a few agencies who is searching for the designers? Do you have a sample of the cover letter for sending it to the agencies/studios? Thank you for the answer.
My recommendation is to go to conferences and meet people. People who work at these agencies and people who run them. Cold cover letters and online applications are a waste of time IMHO. The internet job application process is TOTALLY broken - it's like throwing your portfolio into a black hole. Get out and meet people - network- join a co-working space where other companies are - make connections. THAT is where you work will come from. Best of Alexandra!
can you be a creative director with a marketing degree?
Do you think a degree is important to a design firm? I didn't get to finish my degree in multimedia arts, and other than a very impressive portfolio, what else can people like me do to succeed in this industry?
Jill, I hate to say it, but a degree helps. But your portfolio of actual work is even more important. I have a video on how to leverage LinkedIn coming out in a few weeks- LOTS of great ideas in that - be sure to watch it.
Hi Philip, I'm having trouble picking a major at an Art/Design school. I want to learn design but I also want to work as a creative director on video games. I'm curious, would a Graphic Design degree be sufficient to be considered for something for that kind of job? Or would I need a major more focused on Entertainment Design, Animation, Illustration, etc.?
Star, Definitely focus on Entertainment Design, Animation and Illustration. And also take some business/marketing classes.
come in early and stay late is a very old way of working. Slowly its been fazing out in bigger company like google and netflix
David, It may be the old way, but as much as everyone likes to say it's changing, it's not. Yes, there is more flexibility, more ability to craft your own hours. But I know people at Adobe, Apple, Google, Ebay, Paypal etc - they work harder than anyone. And the advertising industry is even worse. Demands for productivity from every full-time employee goes up every year. But you are free to approach your work how ever you want. I am just speaking from my personal experience as a VP of Design on the client side and Executive Creative Director at global agencies.
I am a horrible introvert.... I find it so difficult to talk to people I don't know.... I believe this has hurt me.
Just have a goal to get 1% better every day. Small bite-sized improvements. After a year, you're 365% better! Just make one move - one try - to improving every day. It gets better - and easier.
We are definitely an emotional bunch. I once had a falling out with a newly promoted Director of Marketing. So much so that HR finally got involved. I was so insulted by this persons arrogance and treatment of me, that I made a huge mistake of calling out that he was ineffectual and didnt know anything. I did this in front of him, our vp an the hr rep. I was fired within a week.
Whoa. That's intense. I hope you landed someplace better with a better manager. I believe things happen for a reason - good or bad - they lead to new places and new opportunities. Thanks for sharing your story! - and thanks for watching sh3llz2!
Yes it was definitely a learning experience. I've gone on to bigger and better things since then. I love the channel. You are a wealth of information in digestible snippets of time! Keep it up.
Thanks man! I do my best to cover some really meaty subjects and boil them down to the essence. I'm always open to suggestions, so if you have any ideas or questions, let me know. I have 2 viewer requested videos coming out in the next month - and I always give the requester a shout-out in the vid!
I did and now I'm terrified
Ja, first of all congratulations! That's an amazing achievement. Second, every new CD is terrified. You didn't get there by accident. Trust your instincts, listen, and try to help and protect your team. The rest will come in time.
@@PhilipVanDusen Thank you so very much for this reply! I will carry your words forever. I needed this! Thank you. (I joined your FB group as well, thanks for the great content!)
@@J4ME5_ Awesome! I'll see you in the FB group! Be sure to read the posting rules - there are a few restrictions to be aware of. and congrats again!
I don't know about this advice. Make kick ass work and don't be around people who hold you down.
Thanks Jeff, great 'build' on the idea.
that is exactly what is wrong with creative business ...
Elaborate pls.
