I didn't see this video before! Super useful. I had few interviews last year and I tried to prepare, but there was few things I missed. I'll add from myself: 1. When you present your portfolio, make sure it looks nice. I slammed my designs on white, instead of putting them into mock ups. 2. I was so excited for a perspective to get a new job, that I started to talk about my current workplace in past, or even slightly in a negative way. It indeed is hell on earth, but you do not want to express it, even at slightest. 3. I make jokes when I'm stressed and I think it generally works well, but I find I make too many of them and might not be taken seriously for the role in the end. Balance is the key. Right now, I feel like I'm way smarter about interviews, but not letting nervousness get in the way is still a challenge.
Jagoda. #2 is an excellent point that I wish I had made in the video. Negative talk about an old employer is the kiss of death - because we all know - if you are talking about them like that now - "we" are next. Also I have found that "belly-achers" tend to be bellyachers on the job - poisoning the pond (or studio) as well. Also #1 Great point about mockups- they are so easy to do these days there is no excuse not to use them on all your work. Cheers J! Good to see you back!
@@PhilipVanDusen I think the main reason why not to say anything is because from employers perspective it's hard to judge whether you really have a hard time at work and why or whether you exaggerate and you are the toxic one. I feel like 9 times out of 10 they think the latter. It's not worth a risk, even if employee's situation is indeed really bad. I'll admit I ended up taking my employer to court because of what has been happening; it's just so wrong and illegal that you can't let it be. However regardless of that, it is not relevant to you trying to get a job, so it's just not worth mentioning. Do you think it's appropriate to ask about the salary? And how should I ask them what the salary is, or if it's to low how do it tell them I want to earn more? Great tips in the video, thank you!
Leave salary negotiations for another meeting after you are offered the role. If you are there and interviewing chances are you know something about the salary range. But the negotiations should happen later. Negotiating salary is an art and a science - and I'm afraid it's too much to go into here. But thats a great idea for a new video!
Pay attention to this video then. It sounds trite, but sit up straight - physically lean in - and do some research into the department. Find out a couple alumni who graduated from the Design School and check them out online/ The Alumni department at the University will give you a couple names. Then bring them up in your interview and watch the interviewer be totally blown away by your true engagement.
Mistre Fiseha, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you? Please share my video with a friend or two! I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
I recently have gone through a couple of interviews for graphic design jobs and did really well on both of them, in fact I was offered a job from both employers! This means that I am taking the next step in my career, I have landed a job with much more responsibility and room for self-development (and I get a mayor salary increase as well), super excited about this! I wanted to thank you again for your awesome tips Philip, they are super helpful and have helped me move on with my career and given me unique insights that have changed the way I think about design and creative work. Thank you
Hi Philip, it's so great that you mentioned about the business aspect of designing, many agencies in my country want only hands to move pixels. What do you think about the employer who is asking the designer to make a sample design before the actual interview?
Ewelina, Doing a project as part of the interview process is not unheard of. I did a project early in my career for a job - and got the job because of it. It depends on 1. How much you want that particular job and 2. if the project isn't so gigantic that it is essentially asking for lots of design work on spec.
I am a homemaker, and mom of three beautiful girls. I want to start my career in art directions. Zero experience, 10 years old Masters degree (MBA marketing). No portfolio to show, but when i sit in my ME time, Ideas start popping in my mind. My question is, where should i start?
Sundus, Great question. If you want to be a creative director or art director you will need to start as a designer first. ALL AD's and CD's come up from the design ranks. The fact that you have a MBA in Marketing is a great start. Now the next move is to start designing. Step 1: take a course in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Start here at byol.me/philip (affiliate link) Daniel Scott is the best in the Adobe teacher in the business and his site membership is SUPER cheap.
Sarah, Thanks! I had to look at it again to see what you were talking about - I don't usually do text in boxes - I usually do slides - so I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Thanks Anjali, I just actually watched this video again recently after months and am really sure, that if you pay attention, and do this stuff, your interview will ROCK.
Thanks for the informative video! Is it normal practice to have a portfolio website as opposed to a digital PDF? I'm looking into website platforms at the moment and slightly nervous to make the financial commitment!
Ash, there are a LOT of free portfolio websites where you can feature your work. You can add your portfolio to Behance.com for free (owned by Adobe and one of the largest portfolio sites) And yes, you do need to have your portfolio online in addition to having a .pdf to send to people.
@@PhilipVanDusen Ah okay thank you! I wasn't sure if employers would expect something more personalised than Behance but that's good to know now! Really appreciate you taking the time to answer :)
Sir I am an Indian... I want to do job in a company as a graphic designer in USA or UK. Can you suggest what to do for this and all the needs including the qualification also. I am a graduate.
You're going to have to get great as a design first, then look for a company that is willing to sponsor you for an H1B VISA - which is getting harder now due to our current political leadership (don't get me started on that one...)
I need good questions to ask the designers. I keep getting tricked by good portfolios, but once they're in the door, they act like they have no idea what they are doing.
Hello Philip, do you have any advice for a beginner, intermediate designer that's transitioning from digital printing to digital graphics and web design?
I always suggest taking about how the strategic business objectives and the creative brief was met - not just the aesthetics. Those aspects of design are medium and platform independent.
I recently had a phone interview with a Fortune 500 company, and it was a different experience altogether. It was difficult to gauge the response and interest of the creative director on the other line, especially when she was silently taking notes during the conversation. There would be long periods of silence that felt excruciating and awkward.
Minute, Phone interviews are awkward anyway - then add in that you might have been interviewing with an awkward CD who doesn't know how to conduct an interview well and that makes it even worse. Not everyone is a great interviewer (not interviewee) either.
Soo, no not too rude. The chances are you would already know from the job listing or from the recruiter. If you don't, then asking" can you share the salary range for a position at this level". Saying "range" give you wiggle room to negotiate more if you get the offer. and it gets the employer to give you an idea of the max they are thinking of paying, but I assure you, for the right person they will always go above the salary they state.
Hello Sir...I am from India but recently shifted to Australia with my husband....I am a graphic designer and want a job here in Sydney...can you pls give some suggestions...
Start with Graphic Design Temp Agencies and get placed as a temp freelancer - at a range of companies over time - they frequently turn into longer-term or full-time offers.

I’m stressing myself for my upcoming interview for a college and I’d like to study graphic design there
Pay attention to this video then.
Philip VanDusen solid advice! That’ll do, thanks so much!!
thank you so much
Mistre Fiseha, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you? Please share my video with a friend or two! I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
Love your videos
Thanks upendra chaudhary!
Thanks for the great tips
Sofia, Thanks for watching - I hope you can put them to use some day in an interview.
Great tips!
Øyvind! Thanks my friend! So happy as always that you are finding my stuff helpful!
Well said.. super b

Very informative video
Thanks Anjali, I just actually watched this video again recently after months and am really sure, that if you pay attention, and do this stuff, your interview will ROCK.
I have interview tomorrow, wish me luck
Come back and tell me know it went!
Good content
More designers need to watch this. I've hired over 400 designers in my career and interviewed thousands. I know what works and what doesn't.
Yes, they do - and having a website is 500% better. But you mentioned you were financially constrained. If you CAN swing it. Have your own site.
Philip VanDusen thank you sir for your valuable instructions.
I need good questions to ask the designers. I keep getting tricked by good portfolios, but once they're in the door, they act like they have no idea what they are doing.
Do You know any designer who is in his 60s and still doing that job in company?
I don't personally know a single graphics designer over 60 currently working in an agency or company, unless they are a principle or owner.
ya he looks like steve jobs
Thanks Mistre, I hear that a lot---like, a lot....
Is it rude to ask our salary in interview?
Soo, no not too rude. The chances are you would already know from the job listing or from the recruiter. If you don't, then asking" can you share the salary range for a position at this level". Saying "range" give you wiggle room to negotiate more if you get the offer. and it gets the employer to give you an idea of the max they are thinking of paying, but I assure you, for the right person they will always go above the salary they state.
Philip VanDusen this is so helpful. Thank you so much sir 👍🏻
Do you recommend a printed portfolio over a digital? I'm so use to having a print on hand.
Luna, Digital. I haven't seen a printed portfolio presented to me in 15 years.
which are agencies where graphic designer are required?
Branding agencies, advertising agencies, graphic design agencies, social media agencies, etc.
@@PhilipVanDusen thank you so much I was confused.. Bt now I cleared
Should your portfolio be very organized or not ?? Does it matter ??
Yes it totally matters. I organize mine by client industry and also product (strategy, brand identity, website)
@@PhilipVanDusen thanks 😊
How much money do we make as graphic designer in australia.
Around the world salaries range greatly from $30k up to $200K/yr - depends on the category, company, agency and your level of experience.
