    Informative video. Philip, please make a video or a podcast on different designations and their roles in design and branding. So many times people confused about what an Identity Designer does and what a Brand Designer does, how their jobs are different, what they are and what they are not.
    I design brand identities and also help businesses to understand their core values, their competition, and their target audience. So am I an Identity Designer or Brand Designer? Who am I? Sounds dramatic right :)
    I believe that what we call ourselves is what we become.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  4 года назад +2

      Prashant, that is a great question. For the most part there really isn't a "brand designer" job role. Brand Design is an over-arching term that encompasses brand identity, graphic design, visual and verbal brand expression and more. An "identity designer" is just a graphic designer who specializes in brand identity/logo design.

    With over 20+ years of graphic designer and fine artist career focused experience with both working for corporate entities and 5 recent solid years of freelance...looking to return to the workforce....I'm dying on your suggestion to reduce the variety to share in a portfolio. The range of highlights of all facets under my graphic design umbrella is all over the place....and I can't imagine it any other way!

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  2 года назад +1

      Ann-Marie, the beauty of digital is that when you send or upload your portfolio of a given position, you can curate it to focus on the area you are applying to. Sometimes when I saw a portfolio where the range it too broad I was left wondering what they were REALLY good at or what they REALLY wanted to do...you get my meaning.

The trial days went on for almost a week and I'm sure I won't get paid since they haven't asked about my info since the interview day..I left cuz I believed that I deserve to be working somewhere better and wasting my time there. One of my new year's resolutions has been pushing my portfolio into case studies system. (I've always had more of a show, don't tell approach, which in the end doesn't work, but we're learning, right?) Guess what is my favorite reference. Hello, I'm hoping Philip VanDusen can answer this question, but if anyone else can answer this it would be great. I just had a graphic interview today, if I get the job it would be my first real graphic job. This job does not offer any benefits and is Contract work. So my question is (I live in MI) how do you find a reasonable 3rd party health insurance (a.k.a A retail policy or individual health ins.) with dental and vision? Also what do you do about not having a 401k or anything else you would have like that if you worked a "normal" job? Lastly what do you have to do with taxes since the job does not with hold taxes either (I'm guessing I have to pay them but how much do you hold back for them)?

      Anna- networking is the best way to land a new gig. Reach out to people directly on LinkedIn. Send them something valuable - and article they might like - and include a link to your portfolio. Be sure to ask if they might know someone who could use help with whatever it is you do. Good luck!

    Do you feel that a designer should come to an interview with a printed "portfolio" any more? Should the portfolio be strickly online?

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  3 года назад +3

      A portfolio presented as a PDF on a laptop is adequate. I don't know the last time I saw a printed portfolio. Just be sure you are NOT relying on an internet connection to show it. ALSO bring a backup copy on a USB thumbdrive in case your laptop fials - so you can use a computer on-site.

    • @GMoney-B
      @GMoney-B 2 года назад

      @@PhilipVanDusen I agree! For my first job out of college I had interviewed for, I had it online, on a flash drive and a printed portfolio. Three backup setup! :) plus I felt like I could metaphorically hide behind a nice portfolio binder. If I can hold onto something it eliminates anxiety. I guess I am a big baby still, haha. It is also handy to carry not just my portfolio work in a book, but also copies of my resume.

    I ran into your video due to the fact that I want to give graphic design a shot. But it seems that I enjoy digital illustration. I have done some design pieces for individuals. This is bold of me to ask. I have nothing to loose at this point. Do you know of anyone who may be willing to give a self-taugh digital artists an opportunity? I figure that it does not hurt to ask. I would greatly appreciate any info. Thanks.

    agree with everything apart from "people love to talk about them selves" I despise talking about my self haha which is probably why I struggle with interviews. Acting like you want to be there when you just want it to be over is really hard to keep up after 20 minutes. Any tips for this? I obviously want the jobs I'm applying for but the interview process I find horrible

    • @GMoney-B

      I’m no expert like the guy in this video, but I would definitely try to overflow a change in your mindset of caring enough to be interested and enthusiastic, but not too much. If you put too much weight on something you will worry about negatives or only worry about messing up. Like a trapeze artist; don’t think about falling but keep your focus on wha you want, to keep balance while you keep moving forward.
      Just realize and think to yourself if it works out, it’s meant to be, if not; there’s other fish in the sea. (Unintentional rhyming but I will take the accomplishment 😆).
      Try to build up your confidence in yourself too. Look at your work, realize you are where you are at in your skill and career, don’t compare to others because everyone is at different levels in different things in life, so no point to compare. With that said be proud of yourself and how far you have come in your experience and career and let that be enough for you. Then take that best version and image of yourself that you have OF yourself, and take it and present it to your interviews with confidence.

    I've checked all these boxes and still can't ace an interview right now. I've been a designer for 15 years now. Last 6 as a SR/ACD and Just failed a good 12 interviews in the last month so I've been trying to find patterns, asides from my anxiety for being jobless for a year due to covid.
    One problem I am coming across is with my portfolio not having enough variety. Usually agencies and new brands hiring in-house want to see ACD/CD level portfolios with no point of focus. My point of focus was mobile advertising, and it ended up hurting me because I have 6 years worth of that work and nothing else. I'm working on building a brand new book right now with fake projects but approaching it as if it's a real client with a design problem.
    The other problem is, in almost every single interview I'm asked: 1."Tell me about your background" 2. "What are you looking to do in your next role". The responses the interviewers expect are subjective. I have NO idea what these managers want to hear from candidates, so I'm always tweaking my message. I've worked for major global brands in my career and it makes no sense why I can't land even a shitty job at an a no name agency.
    I decided to start my building my own company using the fake projects once they are done since no one wants to hire me at this point. Would love to see a video on those questions.

    • @ByRonnita
      @ByRonnita 3 года назад +2

      The problem is your mindset. I highly recommend listening to or reading Neville Goddard you will have the job in no time if you follow the very simple instructions . When the interviewers "ask tell me about yourself and your background" think of if you were hiring for your own company what would you want a candidate to say. What would make you hire someone.

    I've been on the interviewer side. can't stand graphics on a resume. the ones with colored left sidebar, self portrait in upper left, slider graphs of skills on the left or bottom, light or transparent graphic on the background. it should be a TYPOGRAPHIC exercise of all their experience, skills, education, contact info, and summary. I can always tell if the designer doesn't know how to design because they compensate bad type with graphics.
