With Storm, they originally wanted Angela Bassett for the role but sh refused it. She would have been perfect. I think now she regrets that decision and that is why she has done comic book roles like Amanda Waller in Green Lantern and T'Challa's mother in Black Panther. She would have been perfect for Storm.
She read the script (or her agent did) and saw it was a waste of her talents and Storm’s. Probably why Taylor Kitch turned down the role of Gambit at the last minute for Last Stand. Some actors actually know what the characters are supposed to be like and don’t hitch their wagon to shite projects that trash the characters.
Sasha 717 I'm sure she played the role exactly how they wanted her to, but they wrote her character off as a supporting role. Which conflicts with her being a huge focus of quite a few comic issues.
Yep. There were two problems with Halle's Storm. Firstly, they wrote Storm as a supporting character when she's literally a nature goddess. Secondly, Halle Berry thought the whole thing was silly, she just didn't grok the significance of what she was portraying. Halle Berry is generally great, but she phoned it in here.
I don't fault Hallie for that performance. This is a writing and directing issue. What we watched is *EXACTLY* what they wanted the movie to look like.
"They're like kids caught in middle of a nasty divorce." And now Dad(Fox) died so the kids get to go live with Mom(Marvel) and her rich new husband(Disney) forever now.
The new husband is now neglecting the X-men while he is busy molesting his own kids (MCU) from his former marriage. Not a better outcome unfortunately.
Halle Berry is a clown and a buffoon. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion obviously, but I land on the side of the material she was given was clownish and buffoonish. Her character in John Wick 3 had more depth and badassery in 20 minutes of screen than the four movies combined.
Are we also forgetting Rogue also had a child with the father unknown at the end of Days of Future Past and never had a relationship with a proper Gambit the Rajun Cajun on the big screen?
Wild Side Not to mention this is pte character development teenage Rogue who is suffering from her copy absorbtion powers and have yet to control them.
I actually liked her with only her core power. She was great in X-Men Evolution. She has a more unique profile like that. But: Rogue and Gambit are definitively one of the iconic X-Men couples, I was celebrating their marriage storyline in the comics, and I really missed that in movies.
Edax I think for their time the films went in the right direction, the general cinema audience wasn’t ready for something like the avengers then but that leaves them feeling very dated compared to the current crop of super hero films. The X movies deffo had their moments, it’s just become increasingly few and far between.
@@GeekExplorers I think it's just superhero saturation. I have no desire to see a superhero movie in the next 5 years, I've seen enough to last a lifetime.
I still can’t forgot what Fox did with one of the most amazing X-men : Storm , she is a mix of Grace Jones and Naomi Campbell ( in my head ) a powerful , intelligent woman that sometimes can be wild as Wolverine and was transformed into a secondary character with barely a personality on the cinema

Looking forward to part 2 of "In Defense of Cyclops". I know it would be a massive undertaking, but given your love of the character I think it would be interesting to see you go over the various changes to Cyclops' character and personality throughout the decades and give your thoughts on how different creative teams interpreted him.
Thank you! I always feel like I'm the only one out here defending Cyclops. I can't stand the way his character has been treated. Also Jubilogue. Rogue being my favorite.
FYI, the only reason Rogue had those powers in the comics was because she killed Captain Marvel to get them. She had her siphoning power as her only power for awhile in comics, and it would've been awesome to show her kill someone nearly as powerful and be driven mad by it
Rogue didn't kill her (she was Ms. Marvel at that point), she nearly killed her by accidentally maintaining physical contact for too long which then gave her all of Carol's powers and memories...
@@AmatMiguel, it's been a VERY long time since I've read that comic (bought it back when it first came out), but I don't recall Rogue killing Carol in that altercation. There's so many retcons that I can't keep up with them.
@@hughallison4639 same here. Iirc, she killed her when she first absorbed her memories and was haunted by them. Later on, they make up some stuff about (Carol) having too much Kree DNA to die from that and then Carol comes back later to kick Rogue's ass It really makes no sense, but that's a comic book death for ya
I'll be honest, I loved what they did with Toad in the first X-Men. Sometimes movies or cartoons can do good into bringing life to lame characters. I even think after the first X-Men came out they did a Bloodsport Tournament comic where Toad actually killed another mutant. Seeing his abilities get put to good use as far as leaping kicks and his tongue choking people or causing Cyclops to accidentally blast the train station was nice too see.
Guess it depends on source material. Are you comparing to recent books or cartoons, because they aren't good original or first run (CBG19's source material) interpretations. Money (visual effects), ratings (violence), and poor understanding (lack of research) make them Fox-Men not X-Men characters. Your list are all good actors doing their best with what they have but they are still not exactly true to character. I know movies don't have to be, and rarely are, the same but I was responding to CBG19's list from her presented source material.

I really love that you continue to champion and vouch for Cyclops/Scott. He was one of my absolute favorites growing up and it was so hard trying to convince my friends how dumb Cyclops ended up being on screen. Everyone was so enamored with Wolverine by then
The most comic-accurate version of the X-Men I’ve seen on screen was Anime X-Men. The characterizations of Cyclops, Wolverine, Emma Frost, and others were spot on.
Wasn't part of Storm's history being a thief in Cairo I believe, where she met the shadow king or something along those lines and she got possessed at a point. I mean at some point I'm probably blending the animated series and comic books. But I assumed that was part of Storms backstory. It's been awhile
Another excellent video again. Your comments regarding Rogue and Storm will resonate hugely with comic book fans. Rogue should surely not be timid, whimpering, and unsure of herself. She should be loud, saucy, and punch people through buildings. And Storm, one of the greatest comic book characters ever created, should have been given infinitely more kudos/reverence in these films.
Ironically Anna Paquin's performance in True Blood feels more like comic Rogue than her version of Rogue, there she has a Southern accent, sassy dialogue and some pretty badass moments.
Thank you Comic Book Girl for all of your passion and caring towards/for the Xmen storyline. It is nice to hear from a person that knows the source material. There are FAR too many people on youtube that are comenting on these movies that, quite frankly, have no clue what they are talking about.

Whenever anyone says we need more black women superheroes and demand reform of original superheroes to achieve that goal, I always stand by the idea that unless they give Storm a great Wonder Woman esque solo film then I wont even consider it. Storm is a great African Queen and one of the longest running black superheroes in popular film that receives like... No attention. Her film counterpart isnt great compared to the comics but she's still a fucking badass.
@@tadala21 As the first major black female character in all of comics, a literal queen at one point, and someone on par with Wonder Woman in terms of Marvel's character popularity vs. DC she really does deserve better. I get that Fox owned the rights to Xmen and not Marvel but still. Storm was and still is one of my and many others' favorite superheroes.
About your Rogue section . I am going to defend (God I hate that I am doing this) the Rogue character created for the movie. Here we go... Rogues timeline in the comics... Her powers kicks in when she kisses Cody leaving him in a coma taking his memories (which happened in the first movie but I think people just assumed it made him pass out ) Runs away from home scared and timid and found by evil Mystique who takes her in and looks after her for years. While doing what bad guys and gals do, Carol Danvers aka Ms Marvel turns up to stop them. (Yes she was Ms, not Captain but hey that retcon came later meh) Mystique instructs Rogue to hang on to Ms Marvel and not let go even though Rogue desperately wants to stop. This act permanently "siphons" not just MS.Marvels abilities of super-strength and flight but also her memories in sort of identity duplicate in her head leaving Carol in a coma. All the "identities and memories" overwhelmingly conflicting in her head from years of doing that, forces her to seek Xavier out for help. And thats how she joins the X-Men. God that was a lot but now to the defense of the movie (and yes I still hate that I am doing this) lol Because the movie starts with Rogues powers kicking in and the film-makers decision to jump straight to her taking refuge with the X-Men. She was never raised by Mystique for years doing bad guys and gals stuff, so she didnt have time to grow into her comic Sassiness because its time and experiences that make your personality. Different experience equals different personality (for example if I lived different experience I might have been less of a dick........maybe lmao ) She didnt run into and therefore "siphon" off the abilities to fly and have super-strength from Ms Marvel. So essentially her personality and abilities at the time shown in the movie would in my viewpoint be not only quite an accurate representation but a reasonable one.
@ComicBookGirl19 What did you HONESTLY think about Dark Phoenix? Saw your homegirl Dazzler and thought of you!And what about the MCU black-ops soldiers on the train with the D'Bari?!LMAO
This hits harder after the Variety article. Just feel like no one cares anymore like Danika/CBG19. Why aren't you on some advisory panel for the Xmen with Marvel that tells them that Jean killing Cyclops - just isn't a thing. And also you can't get Scott wrong as he's the leader. I only watching the 90s cartoons tbh and even I know that this is obvious.
It's also the actress. Storm is supposed to be a really tall strong african woman with a powerful voice, Halle Berry and the other one would've never done justice to the character.
Raphael Adôrno again, that’s not quite on the actress. Who is in charge of casting? Who chose them? We can’t blame an actress because she isn’t tall or African. You look at the people in power who casted them. And the powerful voice bit... again. Same issue. It would be nice to have a modern rendition of our beloved 90s era Storm. But maybe the directors tried that and it didn’t work? Or maybe they didn’t because they didn’t want Storm to be that way.
Honestly you have the right idea for Marvel to introduce these characters. Introduce them individually as supporting roles then do an X-Men movie. Just use the Marvel formula. Hell storm can be introduced in Black Panther 2.
The best Rogue casting would have been a young Peri Gilpin (Roz from Frasier). She's southern (from Texas), she's super sassy and cool, and when she was young she even had Rogue's hair style (except for the big white streak through the middle of course).
Thank you! Cyclops is awesome and the movies are so disrespectful to him. He should have wrecked Deathstrike and she would have only survived because she can heal.
I grew up in the 90’s- I mean to say my teen years were in the 90’s- and it was X-Men comics and Green Day that got me through it. I HATE the movies’ interpretation of most of the characters overall and I really hope Marvel is able to give us the X-Men that I fell in love with and sounds like you fell in love with too.
She was hoping that movie would never see the light of day when the Disney Fox deal went through lol, I doubt she's gonna stress herself out and piss herself off by watching it, although I'd love to see that video too lol
I understand comic book fans getting upset over the movie versions of their favorite characters not being what they are in the comics, or the 'epic' stories not be told faithfully to the source material, but i'm really getting sick of the reasoning that people use to justify it. The BIGGEST one I hate is 'the Dark Phoenix' story. It's almost demanded by fans, but a single movie will never do it justice as a 'faithful' retelling from the comic books. The original story was planned out to be told in MULTIPLE issues, across several series, and including characters from multiple storylines. To even give this the tiniest chance to be faithful, it would need a trilogy of movies, like LOTR style. I do not think a movie studio would commit to that level of detail on series after having two 'lackluster' movies released. Just the scope of the story itself, all the characters, their histories, etc. A tv show, like the animated series, would be more suitable for such a task. And, with the limit of the characters they COULD use, based on their rights deal, there would have to be workarounds to story elements. Some of the changes, like Rogue, make sense considering that 90% of the personality she displayed as a member of the X-men (or in the animated series) was actually part of the psyche she absorbed from Carol Danvers, and was HER personality, with a southern twist, even down to her choice in wearing the flight jacket. Seeing as they did not have the rights to use Carol Danvers as a source for her 'extra' powers and personality, they were accurate in portraying her as a girl scared of herself, and not understanding her powers. I'm a firm believer that if I wanted to see a 100% faithful adaption of a comic book, or video game, for that matter, I'll just read the comic book, or play the game. There are alternate realities in Marvel, so just think of the X-men movies as another reality. Which now has me thinking of a crossover movie al a Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with the 90's cartoon characters interacting with their live action counterparts. That would be fun.
First of you make good points but it's unfair tto say it's just comic book fans, there are individuals who were introduced and acquired their knowledge from animation and video games adaptations barely read any of the comics or none. Look how much vitriol as well as Snyder ireation's Batman and Superman received because there true to the comic book counterparts. Alot of individuals from the general audience are not comic books fans but are familiar with the in various forms of adaptations over the decades. Last point is a hyperbole, adaptation is different from source material. Your conflating faithful adaptation to an identical adaptation, realistic fans know that adapting into live action movie elements have to be changed that's not problem. It's funny I picked on something over the years book fans are allowed to show their discontent with little to know critique. But comic fan does the same it's an issue. The same with movie fans in regard to remakes. Who knows maybe because comics are not respected by general populace for what they are, but the material they can provide in other mediums for future.
@@supoa9489 oh, believe me, I HATE it when people complain about a movie version of a book, video game, or a Live Action version of an animated movie or tv show. But since this video is about 'comic book' IP's, there's no point bringing them up. I did mention LotR in my original post. And there are tons of complaints about other movies - like the Harry Potter movies leaving out entire plot points and characters, etc. The difference is, production studios and directors will defend their choices when adapting books, video games, tv shows, or animation, but they really don't when it comes to comic book movies, so fans continue to rage and complain. Plus, most people just ignore complaints about 'book to movies' and video games movies are, by default, expected to be crap.

@@Refining1 See the film 'Watchmen' from a few years ago.
I agree but also Night Owl (Cyclops) and Comedian (Wolverine), especially during the 'American Dream" sequence in the 1970's.
I HATE their portrayal of Rogue and Storm! Halle Berry sucked
Sasha 717 I'm sure she played the role exactly how they wanted her to, but they wrote her character off as a supporting role. Which conflicts with her being a huge focus of quite a few comic issues.
Jared Piper I didn’t like her as Storm, I think someone else would have been better suited

Halle Berry is a clown and a buffoon. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion obviously, but I land on the side of the material she was given was clownish and buffoonish. Her character in John Wick 3 had more depth and badassery in 20 minutes of screen than the four movies combined.
I agree with the Rogue thing. A super-strong flying badass that calls everyone Shug? What part of that isn't likeable?
Are we also forgetting Rogue also had a child with the father unknown at the end of Days of Future Past and never had a relationship with a proper Gambit the Rajun Cajun on the big screen?

I actually liked her with only her core power. She was great in X-Men Evolution. She has a more unique profile like that. But: Rogue and Gambit are definitively one of the iconic X-Men couples, I was celebrating their marriage storyline in the comics, and I really missed that in movies.

Redundant list, all of the Fox-Men are wrong. Bigger challenge can you list 5 interpreted correctly?
Magneto, Wolverine, Professor X, X-2 Nightcrawler, Deadpool
Guess it depends on source material. Are you comparing to recent books or cartoons, because they aren't good original or first run (CBG19's source material) interpretations. Money (visual effects), ratings (violence), and poor understanding (lack of research) make them Fox-Men not X-Men characters. Your list are all good actors doing their best with what they have but they are still not exactly true to character. I know movies don't have to be, and rarely are, the same but I was responding to CBG19's list from her presented source material.

Another excellent video again. Your comments regarding Rogue and Storm will resonate hugely with comic book fans. Rogue should surely not be timid, whimpering, and unsure of herself. Let this woman work on X-men flims to get the characters right.
But then she will mess it all up.
About your Rogue section . I am going to defend (God I hate that I am doing this) the Rogue character created for the movie. Here we go...
Rogues timeline in the comics...
Her powers kicks in when she kisses Cody leaving him in a coma taking his memories (which happened in the first movie but I think people just assumed it made him pass out )
Runs away from home scared and timid and found by evil Mystique who takes her in and looks after her for years.
While doing what bad guys and gals do, Carol Danvers aka Ms Marvel turns up to stop them. (Yes she was Ms, not Captain but hey that retcon came later meh)
Mystique instructs Rogue to hang on to Ms Marvel and not let go even though Rogue desperately wants to stop.
God that was a lot but now to the defense of the movie (and yes I still hate that I am doing this) lol
Because the movie starts with Rogues powers kicking in and the film-makers decision to jump straight to her taking refuge with the X-Men.
She was never raised by Mystique for years doing bad guys and gals stuff, so she didnt have time to grow into her comic Sassiness because its time and experiences that make your personality. Different experience equals different personality (for example if I lived different experience I might have been less of a dick........maybe lmao )
She didnt run into and therefore "siphon" off the abilities to fly and have super-strength from Ms Marvel.
So essentially her personality and abilities at the time shown in the movie would in my viewpoint be not only quite an accurate representation but a reasonable one.
Make another one of these! Honestly.. make it like a Top 15.

True. Anyone but Halle Berry. Overrated in every way.
@@lucasorlando99 That too. She probably read the script and declined. Smart move. Lol
The problem with Storm is the writing. It’s always been the Wolverine/Charles/magneto/mystique series in the films

Also can we get Rouge in Captain Marvel 2 just to put her in a coma 😆
