    The actually traditional Superman suits that Nick Cage was wearing in those pics were actually pretty dope. I wasn't a fan of the hair, but that could've changed. But those traditional Superman suits were pretty dope, including the modified "underwear" over the pants they did. I bet those wouldve looked great on screen.

  • @gamemediafan1714
    @gamemediafan1714 3 года назад +94

    I actually found the script online for Superman Flyby, and read the script. It's...not the most terrible script for a movie ever but it's still very odd. This movie is basically the Superman equivalent to Darren Aronofsky's cancelled Batman Year one film, where there are A TON of changes from the source material, which aren't bad ideas, but they just don't fit the material. First of all, Krypton is ruled by a monarchy now, and it never blows up, it's still up and running. Also, the Kryptonian culture is influenced by Japanese culture (katana weapons used by kryptonians, martial arts moves based on karate, etc). Jor-El and Lara Zor-El are the king and queen, and their dethroned by Kata-Zor, Jor-El's evil younger brother that was made up by Abrams (even though the last part of a kryptonian name is the last name, so how are they related? Shouldn't it be Kata-El? ). Years later, Ty-Zor, Kata-Zor's son, goes to earth to kill Kal-El for his dad with a gang of kryptonian soldiers even though Superman had no knowledge of Krypton and isn't really a threat at all (in fact them coming to earth actually made Superman a threat towards them). Superman has the army of the UN kill the villainous group with kryptonite missiles. The movie also rips off the Donner films in some scenes (Lois and Superman flying through air lovingly). Superman and Lois don't have that much chemistry and don't actually talk that much, so it feels rushed. Superman manages to learn the Kryptonian martial arts out of nowhere without any training whatsoever. And then you have Lex Luthor.... who's now the director of a scientific subsidiary of the CIA who studies alien phenomena and is obsessed with it. He makes a deal with Ty-Zor to help him kill Superman in return for the rule of Earth, and it doesn't work. Also Superman leaves earth to Krypton in a cliffhanger. Also, remember that silly part of the script that sole people mentioned with Lex Luthor being a kryptonian all along? That's in the script, except that it isn't even revealed properly during a post-credit scene. He just randomly interrupts Clark and Lois making out and just reveals out of nowhere that he's a Kryptonian that came to Earth some years ago in a pod, and that he was an elite soldier for Kata-Zor. Why did he come to Earth? How did he get his CIA position? What's his vendetta against Superman and who does he really work for? Never explained, just has Superman beat Luthor with Kryptonite and then he gets taken away to jail somehow.
    The biggest problem with this script is that, like the Aronofsky Batman film, it sounds interesting how some of the changes are this big. It does sound pretty ballsy and unique. But the problem is that, like Aronofsky's Batman, it just causes some elements to go against what the source material stood for to the point where it's weird that it's even a Superman movie at all. Krypton blowing up shaped Superman's identity. It gave him hope that he'd find out his origins and get answers, and instead realizes that his home planet and people are all gone except for him. That's what made his arc interesting in the comic, he knew he was the only one left, and so he decided that it was who he was on Earth that really mattered most and the people he loves on Earth. By having Krypton still up and functioning, all that complexity is taken away. You also have the original character of Kata-Zor, who doesn't sound like the worst idea ever, but once you read what he's like you realize that you could've replaced him with either Zod or Brainiac and it could've been the same. Ty-Zor has no character whatsoever and just wants to kill his cousin cause.... his daddy said so. The idea of a Kryptonian disgusted as a CIA Agent using his influence to try to take down Superman is a good idea as well, for an original character. But when you try to claim that the guy's Lex Luthor... it just doesn't fit cause it's nothing like who he's supposed to be, and once again goes against the comic: Lex Luthor was so threatening BECAUSE HE WAS A HUMAN. He had NONE of Superman's powers, but he made up for it with his brilliant mind and manipulation abilities. But with this weird change he's just another Kryptonain bad guy... riveting.

    • @theofficalchairmanrevoluti614
      @theofficalchairmanrevoluti614 3 года назад +6

      Definitely. I think the best versions of Lex usually incorporate on some level a hatred for aliens or at least kryptonians. Superman represents a power he can never have, never control, so he fears that power and ruthlessly attacks him.
      I don’t think a good Lex story has to have him without powers though. “All Star Superman” is often said to be one of the best Superman stories ever told and that’s completely deserved. Lex gains the powers of a kryptonian in that book. I do have a real issue with Lex being kryptonian though. That flies in the face of what he stands for in his best versions.

A huge amount of money for any other film, but the herculean amount of effort and cash required to make a DC character movie happen means it absolutely HAS to be a huge smash hit 1bil+ take to make the whole endeavour profitable. This way of making movies is just not sustainable. And for the directors, cast and crew it's like losing a giant chunk of your life with nothing to show for it.
    Bomer is awesome, he would have done a great job.

    Here's a simple question that should be asked to anyone who aspires to write, produce, or direct a Superman film. "What made Superman a SUPER man?" If the answer isn't "American culture/values", then they have no absolutely no idea of what the character is about.

      @@Pocketrocket-pj1us Joe Schuster left Canada when he was 9 and never went back. The Daily Planet was based on the Cincinatti Times-Star (not the Toronto version). Jerry Siegel who actually WROTE the Superman comics while Schuster illustrated them was born in and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where he attended Glenville High School where he et Joe Schuster as they both worked on their High School newspaper called (what else) "The Torch."
      Metropolis is based on New York, New York. (They include the same landmarks).

    It's ridiculous the number of actors and directors who were attached/connected to Superman movies in the 90s/2000s.
    I think part of the problem was that the Christopher Reeve era just cast too large a shadow over everything. For people alive in the 70/80s Reeve just was Superman, along with the John WIlliams music and so on. I think they just didn't have the confidence to make a new cinematic version and ultimately they went with the homage/continuation approach from Singer. Of course that didn't really work, even though some critics and fans liked it.

    • @ginichilders9619

      I've been saying the exact same thing. The Superman purists' constant worship of the 1978 movie and their unrelenting expectation that every other adaptation has to pay tribute to it somehow has done far more damage to the Superman brand than anything any other creatives have done with the character.

    This was great. You did a great job documenting the historic failures of bringing supes to the big screen. A lot of this stuff could have gone forgotten about - thankfully, we have it here to go back and watch.
    I remember each and every one of these moments too. Reading on sites like aintitcool, comingsoon, and even countingdown - I knew that the movie they were pitching, was NEVER going to be made. The Nicholas Cage one was the closest to being filmed from what I've gathered over the years. Sets were even built.

    The reaction JJ Abrams got to deviating from the Superman mythos so perfectly explains why his Star Wars reboot was obsessed more than anything else with making the Millennium Falcon set EXACTLY like the original. I think his revisionist version would at least be worth seeing, probably more so than Brian Singer's creepily reverent to the past Superman Returns

Clark stops a guy from trying to rape Martha, which makes him afraid of his powers, Krypton not only doesn't explode but Superman is a secret prince who has to go back to Krypton to save it and then , worst of all, Lex Luthor is a Kryptonian, which completely undermines the entire point of the character.
