@@TheUnitedMarshmallowFederation well Batman Begins is a decent movie, and a big improvement on the previous efforts, but Batman Year One is one of the all-time great comics, let alone Batman comics. Whereas reading Batman Year One was like a movie in my head, and that head movie stayed with me more than the actual movie of Batman Begins, and felt like a better movie.
I love this series. The mythology of the movie that could've been is interesting, but I'm glad we got Batman Begins instead. There's still plenty of room to do something darker. I doubt the Robert Pattinson version will be the one.
@@robertpiwonski1215 the look and tone of the trailer are perfect. I am intrigued for sure, but Pattinson looks like a kid in a costume. Even still, I'll give it a chance.
Yep. This, JJ Abrams' Superman: Flyby, Kevin Smith's Superman screenplay... They really should adapt these into animated movies. Maybe there's a legal reason they don't. Plus, I guess these screenplays are for movies over two hours, whereas the animated films usually only run about 80-some minutes - if they cut too much, then they're not really adapting the screenplays.
I wish the movies would explore Joe Chill more, instead of trying to make Joker the reason Bruce Wayne's parents were killed. Batman Begins did okay with the character, but it's kind of aggravating that the movies ignore Chill just because he doesn't have a "gimmick" or flashy costume like Batman's main villains.
So I looked up what exactly this Batman Year one movie would've done, and i found something interesting: the initial script was written by Frank Miller and Aronofsky. What's interesting is that according to an interview, Aronofsky said that the movie WAS NOT gonna be a traditional batman film. His literal quote was "throw out everything you know about batman. We're starting fresh". He wanted to include all the powerful themes of the original comic while making changes with Miller to create something new. And when I found out what those changes were, man were they weird. I copy pasted it so everyone can see: -After Bruce Wayne's parents are shot, Bruce loses his fortune and becomes homeless. Alfred's character changed to a African-American man named "Little"Al who runs a Auto-Repair shop and acts as Bruce's mentor. Bruce doesn't travel the world, he instead reads books on various types of combat and practices them. Unlike the comic it would have focused more on Bruce. Bruce uses mostly chemical based weapons when fighting (like the original Bill Finger Batman). Bruce Wayne gets his persona from an intertwined T and W on a ring he wore while fighting crime that was mistaken for a bat. Many key scenes from the comic are omitted from the script. The Batmobile and Batcave are present. The Batmobile was a modified car in "Little-Al"'s garage. The Batcave is located in a abandoned subway station. Gordon has lived in Gotham for years, and is trying to leave for the sake of his pregnant wife. Gordon's wife is renamed Ann. Carmine Falcone is omitted from the script and Gillain B.Loeb would have replaced him as the Master of the Organized crime. Selina Kyle would have been African-American and would have had a more prominent role. Gordon's character would have been suicidal. The Batmobile would have been a Lincoln Continental. There would have been many new characters that were not in the comic. The batcave was gonna be an abandoned subway station in Gotham. That's everything I found. Just saying, while this script is clearly very different like what the batman mythos is supposed to be, it doesn't sound awful. With the right direction it could've turned out good. Good thing that the Matt Reeves film is taking some influence from this scrapped film (the African American Catwoman with a prominent role, young Bruce in Year one of his career and having a large focus on him, the crime noir visual style, etc.)
Wow, just hearing the grimm storyline of this pitch somehow managed to make Zack Snyder’s DCEU movies sound kind of “bubbly”. Definitely way too dark, but would love to watch this movie as an alternative timeline, or even a dark universe would be great!
After the success of Joker, how is DC not attempting to revive this project!!!!?? They sure don't know what they're doing in Warner Bros.... Great video, a little long and unnecesary history of Batman origins (like we haven't seen pearls in the gutter over and over again!). Thanx!!!!
I’m pretty sure some elements of this script will be in The Batman (2022) with the way they are doing the batmobile and it’s tone (similar to Taxi Driver and French Connection). Either way I hope they make this project at some point, it would make for an interesting “sequel” to Joker. I’m also looking forward to the new movie by Matt Reeves!!!
Aronofsky proved that he can direct a nightmare sequence with Black Swan and the nightmarish finale dream sequence of Mother!. Oh God how much would I have loved to see a nightmare type film of Batman going insane in Arkham trying to stop a breakout attempt from ALL the villains.

Fascinating, first time I heard an in-depth analysis of this project getting scrapped. I remember years ago when they announced it, and was waiting for updates all the time, was disappointed when found out they weren't going ahead with it. I would have liked to have seen Aranofsky's version of Batman, and Burton's version of Superman with Nicolas Cage that got scrapped in the late 90s. Just to see their vision of these characters and the worlds they inhabit would have been intriguing.
I would like to see this and a few other DC projects like JL by Miller, Batman Triumphant, Superman Flyby and Superman Lives as graphic novels that DC could sell as "adaptations" of these kind of scripts. Thank you so much for these videos, sir.
With the new DC Black Labels, I think we could actually get these projects back as their own standalone movies. Only one I don't see as fitting for a revival is superman flyby, cause if you look up the script for it it's basically Man Of Steel, with Zod replaced by made-up characters (Kata-Zor and Ty-Zor). Seriously look up the script it's pretty much the same story. The others though I can see. Only thing is that there's a chance that The Batman (2022) might take a lot of elements from this Aronofsky batman movie. Even some of the stuff described in the video with the style seems similar. Other then that though, I'd love to see the others. George Miller's Justice League would he awesome to see (but I wouldn't mind if it gets reworked into a DCEU movie, it's possible), as well as Superman Lives. Having Nicolas Cage finally as Superman in live-actione would he amazing.
Joaquin phoenix as batman would make sense, especially if it was him when he was in "you were never really here" it had the "vigilante with lot of pent up trauma" style to it
I'm honestly glad things happened the way they did, chris nolan made 2 masterpieces and another pretty good movie, i wouldnt trade that trilogy for year one tbh. It sounds interesting though, it could work in the todd phillips joker universe
Oh and I would love to see Aronofsky's Batman Year One, even if he didn't seem too enthused by it himself Lol. I'd fund him to make it if I were Warners as I'm sure it would still have a different voice from the Todd Philips' Joker and the upcoming Matt Reeves The Batman movie.
Hearing this made me curious to want to read the script, for I never heard about this until recently since I was alittle too young back in the early 2000s. This is something that fits my type of Batman, the Dark Knight Returns & Year One type. I would love to see a darker take on one of my all time favorite superheroes. I think with the Joker's success, we could potentially see something like this in the future, whatever it's a cinematic film or even an animated movie. As of now, if something like this was to be brought to the light of day, I think they would fit it under their DC Black label since the movie would fit under that label. Anyway, great video and as a newcomer to the channel, I'll be looking forward to your future videos.
Considering I have seen others details on this script, this would have been a bit TOO different even with the Joker movie existing these days. However, it could have potentially worked as an original super hero movie.
I dream of an alternate reality wherein an adaption of The Dark Knight Returns was done in the late 80s/very early 90s with Clint Eastwood as Batman and Christopher Reeves reprising his role as Superman #sigh
Despite many of the cosmetic changes to his seminal miniseries, Frank Miller and Darren Aronofsky's rejected film adaptation of the immortal "Batman: Year One" would've been frigging incredible! I would've enjoyed the absolute hell out of a (possibly) R-rated Batman flick inspired by the dark, gritty crime thrillers of the 1970s such as "Death Wish," "Serpico," "The French Connection," "Taxi Driver," "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," and "Dirty Harry"! And Eastwood would've been perfect as the World's Greatest Detective back in the seventies and early eighties!
Also, it's not surprising, with Miller's philosophy that he took this tact. Has anyone ever wondered how close the origin story of the thugs he beats aside are to Bruce's own? They're all suffering from serious trauma
The script sounds totally awesome. It sounds like a really fun dark project! It’s too bad it wasn’t explored more. However the dark Knight trilogy is irreplaceable. It certainly is interesting though to learn about all these projects that were considered over the years for different movies. Your channel is so amazing!
I'm glad this didn't get made since the movie would've been rater R and would've kept kids from not seeing it. Batman is a mainstream character and with merchandise, marketing, and also toys.

French connection Batman, that would have been so dope

I think it's cool that instead of being salty that his ideas were used by other films(despite his pitch being turned down), Aronofsky is just glad he was able to help push superhero movies forward in some way.
I'd like to see this script (as well as other cancelled DC movies) get adapted into an animated film
Frank Miller: Batman wouldn't torture people.
Also Frank Miller: *has Batman setting thugs on fire with bleach on All Star Batman and Robin*
The new Matt Reeves films seems to be going in a similar direction with the violence, corruption and the makeshift look of the batsuit/Batmobile.
LOL
Aside from the "little Al" instead of Alfred. This would be my Batman!! I always said Clint would be great for The Dark Knight Returns Sadly I think his window is past for the role.
The character was technically a fusion of Alfred and Earl Cooper from the Batman The Animated Series episode "The Mechanic".
Back in the day I had Clint as Bruce and Josh Hartnett as Terry in a Batman Beyond film.
Thank GRODD someone is covering this. I've been reading this script and talking about it to any fan that will listen for over a decade it would seem.
The script is crazy (in a good way) very grounded in reality (no grapple gun or gliding around) it would have been interesting to see Phoenix as Batman, they should make this into a comic book/animation movie.
Well, Batman Begins is Basically a Batman: Year One remix.
Widi Priyanto I supposed
Batman Year One is much better than Batman Begins though
@@system-error how so?
@@TheUnitedMarshmallowFederation well Batman Begins is a decent movie, and a big improvement on the previous efforts, but Batman Year One is one of the all-time great comics, let alone Batman comics. The David Mazzuchelli art alone makes it better imo. But in terms of story also, Batman Begins didn't impress me the way Year One did. It didn't leave a big impression on me. Whereas reading Batman Year One was like a movie in my head, and that head movie stayed with me more than the actual movie of Batman Begins, and felt like a better movie.
@@system-error i think batman begins takes alot of cues from year one. But they are two different beasts
I love this series. The mythology of the movie that could've been is interesting, but I'm glad we got Batman Begins instead. There's still plenty of room to do something darker. I doubt the Robert Pattinson version will be the one.
Pattinson just doesn't look like he can be that threatening even if he bulks up(especially with that cowl), but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
People don’t give pattinson enough credit Good Time and The Lighthouse were great but most fans just watch blockbusters & superhero movies.
@@goku8621 Hey, Pattinson is a decent actor and I'm hoping to be surprised. Can't wait to see Tenet!
Still have doubts?
@@robertpiwonski1215 the look and tone of the trailer are perfect. I am intrigued for sure, but Pattinson looks like a kid in a costume. Even still, I'll give it a chance.
I like the Batman costume designs. Looks like a mix of Bill Finger and Paul Dini to me
Thank you for making this, bud! Keep up the great work!
" Nolan would begin work on what we know as Batman Begins, which we know didn't turn out too bad" understatement of the century lol
I mean the movie didn't do as successful in the box office. I think it was the 2nd lowest grossing Batman movie next next to Batman & Robin.
To be honest, Batman Begins was kind of a decent reboot.
It was an example of how to do a proper reboot.
“Bruce’s parents were just away for the summer.” 😮
It’s incredible that this channel doesn’t have at least a million subs yet. Incredibly underrated
For the love of the lord PLEASE do one on Guillermo Del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness!
I love how it's literally just a Elseworld Year One. They should make this into a Animated movie.
Someone at WB was interested in animated failed scrips for films. I totally want to see it too!
it already is an animated movie??
@@ROCKit2grave sadly it's not. I dont think the idea to make unproduced scripts was ever realized
@@ROCKit2grave for the canceled movie, not an adaption of the comic..
I copy pasted it so everyone can see:
-After Bruce Wayne's parents are shot, Bruce loses his fortune and becomes homeless.
In a weird way I kind of see “You were never really here” as the same batman film that’s being explained. Ironically also played by Joaquin Phoenix
Great breakdown. I really would still love to see Darren’s version of Batman Year One
Aronofsky is one of the best directors in the mdoern era. I still need to seem him do a comic movie. He didn't get to do his Batman and Wolverine.

Supervoid Cinema the island of Dr Moreau 1996 original script
@@srstriker6420 oh yeah i saw the documentary for that. Its a real crazy story.
Bruno Franco so I heard
Aronofsky’s script sounds excellent! Like Batman meets Taxi Driver
This is the movie Warner brothers need to bring back from the dead
@Studio Autio Reeves' Batman will be nothing like this, Aronofsky's script was wild, disruptive, raw and brutal, the purist manchildren would have hated it.
@@gregorioguerrero1124 Well yeah, because its not Batman.
@Daftrax 98 Im just saying, there can e diferent versions of Batman, but they have to conform to certain tropes. Otherwise it doesnt work. It has to fit into the mythology.
Seriously they do bro totally agree
@@brunfranc I just would rather have them made an actually realistic batman instead of the nolan movies (although I do like them), batman is inherently not realistic. At his best hes supposed to be fighting killer croc and mister freeze and super comic booky characters. Which is why I think the batman Arkham is the best depiction of him, but I'm just saying... the nolan batman already was a bastardization of the mythos, they might as well have go full on art film on that shit
I am 110% into this and it is a shame it was not made.
Mad props for mentioning Clint Mansell and his connection to the film. I would have loved to hear what he would have done with the music. "P.W.E.I." for life!🔥💨💫😵💀🙉🙈🙊😎✋✌
God we need this movie. Just hearing you describe it makes me wanna see it for myself.
Oh nice! I remember being so excited about this movie, but then I completely forgot about it until now!
I remember that in the script Bruce was described as a hulking and towering man, weighing 250 pounds or something. I always thought that Phoenix was The Worst choice for Bats. Aaron Eckhart on the other hand - hell to the yeah.
I always knew about this but i’m glad you went in detail!
And the joke- we were SCREAMING for this film to be made. This would have been AMAAAAAAZIIIING!
Aronofsky is one of the best. Need more from him.
This would have been an amazing Batman.
Depending on when the Upcoming Batman is supposed to take place, it could connect with the Joker movie
This is a great video, really well done man.
This was phenomenal. Excellent job.
Some of the story elements from Year One made it into Batman Begins
ive heard this story so many times but this is probably my favourite breakdown. subscribed
Fantastic video...very interesting and especially loved the part about Batman's different origin stories. Thanks so much for this.
Any chance of an #AronofskyCut Warner Bros #AronofskysOne..?? Lol
10:54 batsuit was the best one out of all the other concept arts .And I like the red one too.
Considering I have seen others details on this script, this would have been a bit TOO different even with the Joker movie existing these days.
However, it could have potentially worked as an original super hero movie.
I cant believe this hasn't been made. This is an excellent idea.
I dream of an alternate reality wherein an adaption of The Dark Knight Returns was done in the late 80s/very early 90s with Clint Eastwood as Batman and Christopher Reeves reprising his role as Superman #sigh
This is excellent work. For everything there is about comics on youtube. Somehow nobody has done this, subbed.
You know you’re Batman may be a bit too edgy if Frank Miller has to reel you in.
Just found this channel been grinding through these videos what a great idea for a channel
You missed some stuff Jeff Goldblum was supposed to be cast as the Scarecrow in this year one movie
I remember hearing about so many of these batman movies in the works, I remember bing really hyped for this one.
Also, it's not surprising, with Miller's philosophy that he took this tact. Has anyone ever wondered how close the origin story of the thugs he beats aside are to Bruce's own? They're all suffering from serious trauma
Very good video, thank you for this!
it sounds awesome I’m still mad at wanna bros for cancelling the movie
The Batman + Joker = Batman: Year One
This can now be a spiritual sequel to JOKER.
That was great. I love it, I want to see this movie.
Sounds like they using the car for "the Batman" with Rob Patterson
And Robert Pattinson used the hood of that car to plow Zoe Kravitz lol
As ballsy as this is. Making Alfred “Al” and making Bruce poor, it is a super cool idea
Dude this was excellent!! Very well done!!!
With a few changes this would work better as a Green Arrow film where he loses his fortune and so tries to relate to people below the 1%
