July 26, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- I was thrilled to have the gifted voice of Tamino gracing the Tiny Desk. But as charged as I was, that didn't match the excitement that Colin Greenwood expressed as we rode up the elevator. The Radiohead bassist (and bassist for this special performance) shared a brief text exchange with his son, basically telling his hugely accomplished dad that playing the Tiny Desk was "the coolest thing he'd ever done!" That made us all smile.
The attraction that brought Colin Greenwood and these other musicians to bond with Tamino, a young singer of Belgian, Egyptian, and Lebanese descent, is his voice; it's inescapable. For me a reference point is Jeff Buckley; they both have a way of soaring into the upper registers and into the ether; it's stunning. I first heard Tamino perform live at a convention center in Austin; he transformed and transcended the relatively soulless space.
The songs performed at the Tiny Desk by the 22-year-old singer come from both a 2018 EP titled Habibi and later that year an album titled Amir. His use of that falsetto had some faces in the NPR audience gasping in astonishment. There's a yearning in Tamino's songs that I don't often hear in popular music - he makes every vowel count. There's nothing casual about his expressions, whether he's singing about a sweetheart in the song "Habibi" or despair turned to joy in "Indigo Night."
Some of the inspiration for Tamino's approach comes from his heritage and in particular his grandfather Muharram Fouad, a well-known Egyptian singer known as "The Sound of the Nile." It was his late grandfather's old guitar that Tamino had first played. He got to know his grandfather's music through his cassettes. Tamino would later incorporate what he heard into his songs. It's ageless music that Tamino makes - it's melodies feel well worn, but it's also vibrant and intoxicating.

Nice of him to take a break from luring sailors to their deaths to do this concert.
This comment is too funny
lol it's true, what a voice!
but all of them look like pirates :DDD really cool pirates

Wait... so that's what happened to Jeff Buckley? And he transferred his life essence to this shapeshifting demon?

I had the pleasure of seeing him at National Sawdust in Brooklyn this week-- it was the best concert I've ever been to and I have no doubt I'll cherish the experience forever. The venue was tiny (250 capacity), and the intimacy demanded total silence and respect from the audience. There was no chatter or singing along during the performance, and you could hear a pin drop between songs. In fact, he was making friendly conversation with the audience between songs, not like the crowd cheered after his every word, like it was quiet enough that people would ask him questions and he would respond. His performance was absolutely enchanting, just as beautiful in person (I mean the music, but, y'know...), and he was so kind! I met him after the show and he was so sweet, I told him I drove 200 miles to see the show and he was so genuinely thankful. I've talked to several people from the show since and everyone I talk to has reviews just as glowing.
Great story! I really want to be in one of his concerts..
@@ivannna6891 If you have the chance you absolutely should! I don't know where you're located, but he's touring the US again this spring :)
Here in Belgium (where he is from) he plays big venues and even there for thousands of people, everyone is quiet you don't hear anything apart from the music. His concerts are the only concerts you can get that, and it's amazing. He WILL get you to tear up. I love going to his concerts.
Just saw him in los angeles and had the exact same experience. Most intimate show I have ever been to, his talent and presence was almost mind blowing. I’ll never forget it...

Habibi and Indigo Night are two of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and it took me five years to discover. So glad mitski decided to bring this man on tour. He went from a complete stranger opening a show to being one of my favorite artists, that same night.

Which ones are they?? I would like to listen😍

Damn... he's good, amazing vocal range, looks smoking good, lyrics on fleek... never heard of him before... gives me a Buckley vibe, new fan over here!
Buckley was my first thought, a second after seeing him.
He's super talented! He gave the Buckley vibes too at first but I guess now after listening to him for months, I see them as a toyally different and precious thing, each owning my heart nevertheless.
At first listen, it's like Radiohead mixed with Jeff Buckley
twmusicoustic and a pinch of Nick Cave..........
I clicked the video cause he does look like Jeff, came here looking for anyone with a similar opinion and here it is hehe.
with some middle eastern music moments here and there
ramft89 the mention it in the description (not that he looks like him but..)
I'm picking up on more Muse than Radiohead personally
I wished he talked more, explained a bit the meaning of some songs or what not... I saw him in concert and he was very charismatic!!
Although he isn't the most talkative of people, he does give interesting interviews and explains the meaning of the lyrics to a certain extent. He likes his texts to be a bit mysterious so everyone can find their own meaning in it.
When he hit that high register I felt like screaming out, "Marry me!"
Imagine him doing a cover of Lana’s, Salvatore… like I need it

Check out Jeff Buckley, the influence is very clear, I think you'll like his stuff.
When he sings I think I can finally see magic with its touch of gold and darkness, I think I can believe in angels falling from the sky with their pure feathers tainted with carnal delights, I think I can pray to forgotten Gods caged in ruined temples. He creates fantasy stories.
It is a pleasure to see Colin Greenwood working with such a young talent, keep going making good music Tamino!

This is the video that made me fall in love with Tamino. When it ended, I sat there in silence, moved by what had I experienced. Last weekend I finally got to see him live. Although I have listened to his songs a million times, it felt just like the first time. I feel so lucky to exist in the same century as he does. I am sure that his music is something God has created for me.
I’m from Antwerp, like him, and I saw him perform twice. First was in an intimate, 1.500 venue (unfilled) concert hall and last week it was a 8.050 venue, basically sold out arena. I am so proud he’s made this much impact!
Ive enjoy his music for a bit and just recently went to his concert in Chicago. The way he interacts with his fans is so minimal yet so defining. He's got a genuine, cool, and kind personality. I really hope more people recognize his music and dont ruin his up and coming fame in America. Cuz he's got a rare soul and passion for his music and roots that ive ever seen.
His voice gives me goosebumps.
And from his songs I also get the vibe of the movie 'Only Lovers Left Alive'.
I'm just hypnotised by him..
The comment section makes this even better
