    Lyrics:
Sometimes the river flows but nothing breathes.
A train arrives but never leaves.
    It's a shame.
Oh life - like love that walks out of the door,
Of being rich or being poor.
    Such a shame.
But it's then, then that faith arrives
To make you feel at least alive.
And that's why you should keep on aiming high,
Just seek yourself and you will shine.
You've go to search for the hero inside yourself,
Search for the secrets you hide.
Search for the hero inside yourself
Until you find the key to your life.

This song reflects the optimism we had in the 1990s. Our culture was thriving. Nowadays our music industry has been decimated. And there’s far too much negativity, caused by social media, bad government and crazy ideologies.

Heather Small has the most exquisitely beautiful voice i have heard in this lifetime. It is an absolute pleasure to listen to her voice.
I admire the well written lyrics, lots of wisdom in those lines.
My son asked me one day as we were driving down the highway listeng to "just for you" by the m people, it sounds like she is singing that song to God.
A heavenly voice that i have admired for many years. And enjoyed listening to.

I’m currently having rehab in getting my legs geared up ready to walk again after being in ITU since my 27th birthday in February battling a combination of Meningitis, Encephalitis, Pneumonia, Swelling In The Brain and a Collapsed Lung which made my muscles go to sleep. M People’s ‘Search For The Hero’ along with various music from the 90s which was my era (I was born in ‘97) have been helping me get through these challenges.
When I finally get my strength back and come home, I’m gonna have a big Welcome Home Party and I’ll be playing a lot of music from the 90s on my playlist including M People, it’s just so full of positivity, inspiration, happiness and real talent. 💚

I am sure your parents would be saying the same about music of your era Richard, My parents did, I did with my kids music, but not my grandkids music. At 67 years old, I finally realised that the world actually does move on and peoples choices are not the same as mine! The music the kids follow today is their choice, their style, their world. It is just as relevant and exciting to them, as American Pie was to you and me. Living in the past is great - I do it myself! But please try not to knock later generations for their choices - it is their turn now and it gives us older ones a bad press! Incidentally, this song inspired me to achieve great things in my own personal life, and brings a tear or two every time I hear it, even now! Heather Small is an incredibly talented singer and, in my opinion has never got credited nearly enough for how good that talent is! 🙏🙏🙏

Derek you are so right, but interestingly the guitar chords are very simply, only 4 chords, they are just played in a different order in the verses and chorus. On my chord sheet it's flagged as "intermediate" which is strange because I've had far more difficult songs flagged as "beginner". The real difficulty with the song is finding a strumming rhythm that fits the song.

Sometimes the river flows but nothing breathes
A train arrives but never leaves, it's a shame
Oh, life like love that's walked out of the door
Of being rich or being poor, such a shame
But it's then, then that faith arrives
    To make your feelings alive
And that's why, you should keep on aiming high
Just seek yourself and you will shine
You've got to search for the hero inside yourself
Search for the secrets you hide
Search for the hero inside yourself
Until you find the key to your life
In this life, long and hard though it may seem
Live it as you'd live a dream, aim so high
Just keep the flame of truth burning bright
The missing treasure you must find
    Mmm-mmm-mmm
Because you and only you alone
Can build a bridge across the stream
Weave your spell in life's rich tapestry
Your passport to a feeling supreme
You've got to search for the hero inside yourself
Search for the secrets you hide
Search for the hero inside yourself

My cousin Andrew Tempest who served in the Royal Signals was the nicest person you could ever wish to meet, had this song played at his funeral, and even now after all these years every time I here this song it upsets me and reminds me what a fantastic person Andrew was. I just wish that I could of got to know him better. You are sadly missed, and my condolences go out to your family. I wish that I could be half the person that he was. Andrew was taken far too early. He should have been given more time to spread the joy and kindness that came from him. The world would be a nicer place If people could be more like Andrew.

I was being badly bullied in secondary school during the 1990s.
I was hiding in the stinky toilets away from bullies. I suffered racial, homophobic abuse & shaming for being neurodiverse.
Then all of a sudden I hear this song from the nearby art studio.
I didn't feel so alone in that moment.
I had the privilege to meet Heather Small after her concert last year in March.
I focused on my time schooling in Nigeria. I have a Nigerian father and German mother, I was born in the UK.
When Heather and M People became big i was living in Nigeria for a few years attending school in Lagos.
As I said to Heather, being gay, Neurodiverse and British made me an outsider... But Heather's music made it ok to be different 💕
Heather gave me a hug and that memory will stay with me forever.
