@1:34 The singer chanting this part is an indigenous person from Taiwan. He is a highly respected elder in his tribe, named 郭英男 (Guo Yingnan). The high-pitched female voice is that of his wife, 郭秀珠 (Igay Duana). The song they are singing is called "飲酒歡樂歌" or "老人飲酒歌" (palafang). The band Enigma did not obtain permission or authorization in the process of creating their song "Return to Innocence," which led to an international lawsuit that was eventually settled.
After this, Guo Yingnan says 「as long as everyone knows that this song comes from Taiwan's 阿美族 (Amis) people and that it was sung by him and his wife.」 He hopes that everyone can become more familiar with and listen to the singing of Taiwan's indigenous people.

Man...1994. I was 7. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Absolute devastated warzone. We rarely had electricity or gas or running water in between Serb shelling and sniper fire. We'd get some power for maybe a day or two, thats when you'd get things done if there was something to cook or improve or whatever. I distinctly remember this song when it would be on tv, or radio. It wasnt often, but when it was on I'd listen. Thats the memory I have of this song. I know, not as pretty or cozy as some other comments on here but damn, it was one bright spot of my childhood. Respect and thanks for lighting up my life at times. 🤘

Random teenager here. I won't pretend to be one of the people who listened to this song originally. But my dad loved this when he was my age, and it's thanks to him that I'm here. There's this feeling from special kinds of music that you can't find anywhere else. Some day, I want to inspire the same sort of feelings that this did for me and my dad at such different points in time. Love this music.
One of my proudest moments is when my son told me 90% of the music in his Playlist was because of me 😊

My mom loves this song. She's currently dealing with breast cancer and everytime I pick her up at the hospital after the treatment, we play this song because she loves it. These past couple of months have been really tough and I just want to see my mother dancing and jumping again to this song like back in the days. I hope so.

There is just something so peaceful and yet tragic about this song. It really does feel like you are spending your final moments of life, going back and remembering your whole life from the start. Reminding you of your own mortality, and that time is precious. It's beautiful and humbling.

The old man died and his whole life flashed before his eyes in reverse order. He remembered where he had been, where he worked, whom he loved, how he walked under the same pear tree when he was a child. And he even remembered the moment of his baptism. This song changed my Life. I was 15 around the time it was released getting into trouble pretty much giving up on everything and putting stress on my Mother. I've always loved Rap music apart from today's mainstream so never really cared about Enigma back then. Return to Innocence would pop up on the radio quite often. I woke up one morning and turned the radio on and here's this damn song again lol.. I sat there just listening to this song while my mother was doing dishes looking stressed. I started feeling weird I was getting emotional. I got up and helped her and started to realize the importance of taking care of her, being there for Her. Will always love this song

I hate to burst your bubble, but they STOLE this recording from an Aboriginal married couple named Difang and Agay who were singing this DRINKING SONG in a bar in Taiwan!!! They were never paid royalties and did not even know their song was the theme of the 1996 Olympic Games and a mega money making hit until a village neighbor asked them about it 20 YEARS LATER!! They sued Enigma and the recording label, and they received a crappy payment. There is NOTHING SPIRITUAL about this song, it is not an Native American song, it is a stolen performance of the Ami Drinking Song. You may Google it for proof if you'd like.
This song has extra special beauty for me as it was on a tape from a dear friend when we were 17 and I remember thinking this song was magical and she gave it to me, she died a few months later in a car accident, im crying as I write this as I miss her so much. I'd rather had a full life and dead at 45 than the torment of the absents of simple things in life. No pie in the sky, simple goals - all miles too high. Chasing dreams that run faster than me. I begged my younger friends under 30, don't end up like me.

I think in the 90s it seemed that there was actually hope in everything, at least in the western countries. That things are actually going to get better. This song is one of those that captures that great feeling from the 90s.
