      Corsair case ads always have the lowest version of their RGB fans. "Oh I'll just drop another $100+ to get the real RGB fans + the Commander Pro that's going to be needed...". Thanks Corsair.
      I've got 2 out of 6 their HD fans going TU. 1 growling while the other has 1 LED that's freaking out randomly. All 6 are under 2 years old & am planning to RMA.
      Also, I love how Corsair shows their own water cooler mounted lines up on their own case, but that's Corsair for ya. My own Corsair H150i cooler in the Corsair Cryatal 570X doesn't mount properly due to hose length.

      3070 is one of those new gen cards where you are guaranteed an easy 5 years minimum before you require an upgrade. won't need to wait, tho waiting just a bit longer is usually the smart move. Think about it like this if you bought a 2080 a year ago you would be buying the best available card (performance for price) and that should last 5 years easy. In this case you are getting a 2080ti level card at half the price and are still getting 5 year minimum. Just saying, you can't go wrong.

      @@deam0155 if your not overclocked or not very overclocked, you can actually undervolt your cpu(volt not clock, no performance loss) and save some degrees on your cpu.
      A bit more aggressive fan curve ontop of that you probably won't see much cpu tempature difference.
      If your evo cooler doesn't have both fans installed or you have some empty fan slots on your case, you likly can afford to fill those slots if your looking at a 3080.
      Standard cases with open air gpu coolers already have a fair amount of the heat go into the cpu already. Its not a problem that I think I, nor most gamers can't get around.
      Or actually, stock will be low.
      So nvm, the cooler will suck, your cpu will go up 200C if you use the 3080FE, dont buy it!

    • @jayh1096
      @jayh1096 4 года назад +3

      deam0 nothing wrong with air cooling in terms of generating heat internally, so long as you have a strong air cooler. The evo is pretty weak if you don’t want to blow hot air everywhere, a well piped or beefy air cooler should have enough heatsink to sustain a lot of of heat passively, minimising the need to blow hot air around, minimising RPM of the cpu fan speed too.
      Upgrade your CPU cooler if you’re gonna go 3000 series. Noctua U12 is good enough compact, ideally D15 or the bequiet deep whatever it’s called equivalent.

I'm getting a 3080 and I'm upgrading my ol' reliable 3770k (I might frame it on my wall) to either a ryzen 4000 series when those release or, if they end up being overpriced for a tiny boost, a 3800xt. EK have said that they are definitely doing the FE card as well as the RE card. With the RE, they said that they're going to get it out at or close to launch, it's unclear when EK will get out the FE block.
    I don't think it'll be too much of a problem, since it conforms to most other block sizes and shapes, so hardliners will be able to squeeze it in behind and just softline their loop over the GPU for the time being, and softliners won't have any issue most likely and just be able to swap in a longer tube for just now and until the water block comes out fitting this chevron shape.
    It'll give a good amount of time where thermals can be observed on this fairly uncommon "pass-through" air cooling design, and then have all the watercoolers thoroughly appreciate their water loop when it does come out. There are so many factors that will come into play with this weird PCB shape, like the actual shape, and the power connection on it. With everything being "closer together", it will either see an increase in performance, or a decrease due to lessened thermal sponging from the smaller block of metal compared to a reference card or a manufacturers card.
    All in all, I'm excited to see a change in everything, the price to performance, the new spec, the new shapes, everything. We're getting the performance now, it's just efficiency that will need to be worked on on either revisions, or further generations.

  • @RachelMant
    @RachelMant 4 года назад +6

    I keep seeing techtube talk about PCIe Gen4 and while you're all right that it makes no difference for GPUs, it was never intended for GPUs.. to see why AMD launched it when they did, you have to look at the Mellanox IB/Ethernet adaptors
    Specifically, you have to use SR-IOV and two x16 lanes of PCIe Gen 3 to do 200Gig networking as PCIe Gen 3 doesn't have the bandwidth, while you can do that in a normal single x16 card on Gen 4. And you pay for having to use PCIe virtualisation to realise that 200Gig link, especially if both links don't come from the same PCIe-staved CPU. It's HPC networking that pushed this change forward, and AMD decided that why not give consumers the boost.
    Likewise with NVMe storage being another (lesser) factor

    I wish video reviews such as this would also include a brief mention of Linux. I think most Linux users know, however, that a new NVidia card is likely to cause lots of headaches, if they can get it to work at all. And one of the problems using NVidia with Linux, is you have to be very careful when updating your system, and you have to try to keep the NVidia driver updated. Feel free to correct me, because I am new to Linux. I plan to purchase a Nitro Sapphire 5700XT once I can find the money, as I understand it all the drivers are baked into the latest 5.8.x kernel or 5.9.rc4 if you

You want to know the competition before making a decision and what with the predicted availability issues, most cards will be priced above msrp. That last part especially: thinking of selling my 2080 now to get the 3080 as I have a 980ti not in use, but worried I won't be lucky and get stuck with only the 980ti for months (mostly play triple 1080p racing sims so it's a lot for the 980ti to handle). Safer move might be to hold off and sell both 2080 and 980ti at a reduced cost whenever I get a 3000 series card.
    Also: I don't know if this is mentioned often, but I really appreciate that Jay tries to record videos with as few edits as possible and leaves in some of the mistakes, and when they do transition to a different take, Phil makes it intentionally obvious (and often funny)...not a fan of the "every sentence or even half of a sentence is an edit" approach that many RUclipsrs choose to employ. Makes it feel like you're having a discussion (albeit one-sided lol) with a real person, as opposed to an algorithm of carefully curated responses. It's little things like this that make this channel one of my daily RUclips "stops"...keep up the good work Jay and Phil!

And aren't you kinda skeptical in the least? I mean the RTX 3070 with its 5888 cuda cores performed about as much as the RTX2080 Ti which has 4352 cuda cores. And we all thought the RTX20 series was a beta test lol. If you're hell bent on upgrading then at least wait 2 or 3 months. To see how reliable these cards are. Also I'm pretty sure you and many others can't get their hands on these cards till march of next year anyways because of low supplies(check out the latest leaks for more info) and high demands.

And after all, just take a look at Radeon 7, a 7nm TSMC card vs the 12nm 2080 Ti. The Radeon 7 uses nearly 300 watts, yet gaming performance is worse than the 2080 Ti. Which BTW, samsung 8nm isn't less efficient than the previous 12nm, it's more efficient. And the 3080 is 320w rated, so just a little more than the 7nm Radeon 7, for WAY more performance. There's way more to card efficiency than process and AMD had better improve upon that or we'll see their cards topping 400 watts attempting to compete.

      @@thanishdavipaul2876 a monitor with 4k and 144+hz costs double (maybe even triple) that of a 3080. So he probably did mean 2k :p

      2k/1920x1080p with high FPS? You’d get super smooth FPS at 2.5k with 2560x1440p and even 4K/3840p. But perhaps you’ve conflated the terms?
      4K is a term born for motion pictures- and when used in marketing for displays, it refers to the horizontal resolution of 3840x2160 vertical. By all logic, this is why 2K refers to 1080p, being horizontal 1920 (rounded up to 2000)x1080p vertical. 1440p is treated the same, at a horizontal resolution of 2560x1440p vertical (rounded down to 2500 for 2.5k.
      4K was also used as a marketing term for displays to simplify the understanding for the TV audience. Mainly as a 4K display contains 4x the pixel count of a 1080p display which was the previous standard.
      2k for 1080p is an error of terminology which has been retroactively added to refer back to a now ‘older’ tech. Born from the term 4K which was never meant for display definitions (UHD just didn’t cut it alone as a term). Monitor display resolutions were considered important long before the HD era of TV’s ushered in the 720p ‘HD ready’ and 1080p Full HD era started.
      Apologies for the wall of text! Just sharing :)

      @@mike_nelson and after all that wall of text at the end of the day no matter what you say is "retroactive" or technically incorrect/correct; When referring to display resolutions especially in the "gaming" arena, it is generally accepted that when someone says 2k they are referring to 1440p or more specifically 2560 x 1440.
      IMO, to give categorized titles to specific horizontal pixel count ranges seems even more unnecessarily incomplete as how we also refer to resolutions by only the vertical pixel count (720p, 1080p, 1440p etc...). Given the nature of different aspect ratios, I think it would make more sense in the absence of just stating both horizontal and vertical, we start referring to specific resolutions as the rounded total pixel count in millions (MP) and the AR. for example 4k (3840 × 2160) could be referred to as 16:9(8MP) and 1440 would be 16:9(2.5M) so where as we also have ultrawide 1440 (3440×1440) that would be 21:9(5M). ...or perhaps just refer to both the complete horizontal and vertical pixel count. Either way we all would have to remember more numbers lol ...just my thoughts on the subject.

    Definitely going to wait for Big Navi!
    If AMD fails then im going 3080, probably wait for the Ti.. that 700 - 1500 gap is huge

      True, then again you could get more GRAM with the 3090 and potentially a longer lasting card perhaps.....

    I know that SSD data decompression directly to VRAM is a forward thinking concept for PCIe Gen.4 - but what I would like to know is whether or not they'll allow the technique to be used on Gen.3 systems. Even though the bandwidth is considerably lower I would still think there's a big advantage to be had over going through system memory regardless of the Gen.3 vs. Gen.4 bandwidth.
