  • ( www.alltfl.com/ ) Check out our new spot to find ALL our content, from news to videos and our podcasts! Our C5 Chevrolet Corvette may have been among the best performance options for the money back in the late '90s. But by modern standards? That may not be the case, as we think this entry-level Chevrolet Bolt (yes, an electric hatchback) can give it a run for its money.
The results are...well, much closer than you might think!

Awesome video, and it matches my experience in my Volt. I love it when someone thinks it's slow and tries to go around me at the other lane at a stop light. It's always fun to watch a v8 pickup at max effort trying to keep up with my little Volt from a stop light.

@@SmashTheNumbers The phrase "instant torque" is meaningless. All vehicles produce "instant torque". An electric motor simply has different torque characteristics to an ICE, i.e. its maximum torque is at zero rpm and it produces less and less torque the faster it spins.

    • @SmashTheNumbers
      @SmashTheNumbers 2 года назад

@@Ijusthopeitsquick Instant torque means you get full torque immediately, which is extremely meaningful, because most of us drive where there are traffic lights and on ramps to highways. Turns out that 0-40MPH acceleration is important to most of us and almost every EV vehicle does that better than almost every ICE vehicle.

I have a silly idea for a project: take all the unnecessary weight out of the Volt (rear seats, door panels...), install lighweight aero wheels and good tires, install sport suspension, tint the rear windows (so people can't see the stripped interior), keep the exterior stock (store all the removed parts so the car can be brought back to stock).

How did you do the braking on the Bolt? There are 3 ways to stop the Bolt; steering column paddle regenerative braking, driving in low gear activates 1 pedal driving (just take your foot off the gas and it will stop the car) and the traditional foot pedal brake. You could actually use two or three at the same time and that would probably have stopped it quicker.

@@SmashTheNumbers I think the Chevy Bolt EV is a GREAT deal, but let's not get too carried away. Back in the day (26 years ago) a stock 1997 Corvette w/345HP LS1 would do 0-60 in 4.7 sec (@ sea level). While the Bolt runs a fairly impressive 6.4 sec 0-60 time. So obviously THIS C5 has suffered power loss and possible transmission issues over the course of 26 years not to mention the HP penalty 5,500' altitude brings. An altitude where most Americans don't live...and I'm an ex-resident of Colorado myself.
"The first C5 came standard with a 4-speed automatic transmission, and there was an available 6-speed manual tranny. It delivered style, sophistication, and performance. The curvy redesign was teamed with a new engine that was lighter than the one it had replaced while producing more horsepower. The new C5 was able to go from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds."

Some ppl might think this is a waste of time. I've certainly said that about some of TFL's videos. But this one is actually amazing because it really illustrates how technology changes performance over time. Now look- i've owned a few c5s, and the driving excitement beats the bolt all day long. thats why people still drive classic cars. But if there are ANY people left (looking at you, Cavuto) that still make these specious arguments that EVs arent the answer to our transportation problems, this kind of puts that argument away. My argument for a build has to be putting a c5 corvette body on a Mach-e platform. now that's a car.

Not only can many EV cars BLOW AWAY ICE CARS in pure acceleration, the ONLY REASON the BOLT loast to the Vette is the mere fact of a SMALL EV motor and lesser tires being present on the Chevy Bolt!
In the next FEW WEEKS, not only is brand new set of EV battery technologies being introduced but also different types of PERMANENT MAGNETS that have Tesla-scale EM field strengths (i.e. a unit of magnetic field-strength and NOT the Tesla car company!) are ALSO coming. It used to be that Neodymium and Cobalt-Samarium rare earth magnets were the BIGGEST DEAL in EV motor magnet technology BUT NOW, much newer "Liquid Magnet" technology that bests Neodymium by quite a significant amount (i.e. by at least 50x) having IMPULSE STRENGTHS into the MANY TESLA LEVELS (One Tesla = 10,000 Gauss) which means TORQUE will go right off the scales allowing much faster acceleration and better towing!
This ALSO MEANS MUCH BETTER TIRES will be needed in order to translate EV motor torque into actual forward movement! And because "Liquid Magnets" use no rare earths, the costs to make EV motors will SUDDENLY DROP by an order of magnitude AND will be much more environmentally-sound in terms of materials needed to make Liquid Magnet EV Motors!

@@maj429 NCA - North Canadian Aerospace (i.e. an under-the-radar all-Canadian aerospace company) has been developing reversible-consumptibe-anode/cathode-process Aluminum-Sulfur batteries for almost 20 years now which have 8x the energy density of Lithium Ion.
I have personally driven the Ford F450 Superduty Dually test mule truck which had its engine, fuel tank and drivetrain replaced with the new battery system. It can carry 4 passengers of 250+ lbs (113 kg) each AND still tow 25,000 lbs (11,339 kg) for 1600 miles (2574 km) on a single charge while driving the 8.5% up and down hilly grades of the Western Canadian highway system in BOTH -40C freezing winters AND +40C hot summer temperatures with no issue.
I consult to the parent company so I get to see all the GOOD STUFF coming out! We even Sheet Graphene Supercapacitors that can charge 500 KWh batteries (i.e. 3.5x the power of the one in the Ford F150 Lightning which is 133 KWh) in just FOUR MINUTES!
So YUP! Looks like the driving range issue and even the charging speed issue IS NOW SOLVED as of 2023!

No, it won't. I expect a 15-20 year lifespan by which time third-party backup to keep them going longer will be available. Eventually road salt and rust will get most of them, like everything else, where applicable.
But a C5 is at the bottom of its' depreciation curve right now while the Bolt, being brand-new, is by definition at the top of its'.

@@rnt45t1 Operating costs should be ADDED to the equation. When you do that, you realize that the cost to run a Bolt (operating and maintenance costs) v. a old, under 20MPG ICE vehicle, may be so low that it completely offsets the higher payment. Plus I do not see them depreciating much because of value of time saved via access to HOV lanes and the new $4000 USED EV tax credit. There is definitely gonna be a "FLOOR" to how low the price of the cheapest used EV will be.

@@rnt45t1 I leased a Volt for $318 a month because I was able to have the finance company take the $7500 tax credit (and the title) and then apply it as a downpayment on the lease. I probably saved about $150 a month in operating costs v. an old ICE vehicle based on my daily driving needs. My net cost was $168/month and I did not have to worry about any out of warranty issues or depreciation. Cost of operation is a huge factor in my case. Plus during those three years, I invested in Apple and Google Stock which each more than doubled in value during that time, instead of having my money "stuck" in a depreciating asset.
There are a lot of factors to consider when making a financial decision. Good to go through all of them.
