- ( www.alltfl.com/ ) Check out our new spot to find ALL our content, from news to videos and our podcasts! Our C5 Chevrolet Corvette may have been among the best performance options for the money back in the late '90s. But by modern standards? That may not be the case, as we think this entry-level Chevrolet Bolt (yes, an electric hatchback) can give it a run for its money.
The results are...well, much closer than you might think!

As always, this video is really a lot of fun. Extra props to Brendan being the most graceful race-starter in all of TFL!
Awesome video, and it matches my experience in my Volt. I love it when someone thinks it's slow and tries to go around me at the other lane at a stop light. It's always fun to watch a v8 pickup at max effort trying to keep up with my little Volt from a stop light.
This is why I can't stand Prius drivers.
@@rnt45t1 Volts have instant torque and can absolutely keep up with ICE sports cars (at least until about 40MPH). Most Priuses do not have instant torque.
@@SmashTheNumbers it's more of a meta comment on the snobby "I'm better than you" attitude that comes from most hybrid/EV drivers.
@@SmashTheNumbers The phrase "instant torque" is meaningless. All vehicles produce "instant torque". An electric motor simply has different torque characteristics to an ICE, i.e. its maximum torque is at zero rpm and it produces less and less torque the faster it spins.
@@Ijusthopeitsquick Instant torque means you get full torque immediately, which is extremely meaningful, because most of us drive where there are traffic lights and on ramps to highways. Turns out that 0-40MPH acceleration is important to most of us and almost every EV vehicle does that better than almost every ICE vehicle.
I have a silly idea for a project: take all the unnecessary weight out of the Volt (rear seats, door panels...), install lighweight aero wheels and good tires, install sport suspension, tint the rear windows (so people can't see the stripped interior), keep the exterior stock (store all the removed parts so the car can be brought back to stock).
I took would like to see this thing stripped down and see how quick it would be
I am in for this build
No
okay, but then do the same on the vette. whats great about this one is that it demonstrates what two stock cars from different eras with different engine tech do when raced.
Disassembling part of the car is really a build
I would still buy the Vette
Thats shows how old your are boomer
Any human would
Of course you would
id get the ev because im not in the mood to show off lol.
All that means is that nobody is cross-shopping these two cars, which is kind of obvious. Even if they were from the same era, they're designed for completely different market segments.
EVs are amazing, but I'd have the big red shouty one instead. Great vid TFL.
You can see in the brakeing segment the vett was on the brakes just a tad sooner. I bet that's most of the difference in the measurement. That bolt is impressive for what it is.
Yes it is. I think the Equinox EV is as good if not better.
Repair bills will drain your pocket on the covett. Give me the bolt
I owned the c5 vette, it was bullit proof,,,,,, i loved it,, now i own a c8 zo6, i well say no more 😏😎👏👏👏👏👏
C7
Putting the Bolt in "L" might have given a few extra milliseconds of regen braking when you lift off the throttle - but in the end, it's a heavy car with relatively skinny tires so this test was fair. Using "L" would have been cheating ;)
When I see the Chevy Bolt I think of Dominos pizza it’s a fast little car, still would rather have the Corvette though
Good work guys.
Would love to see how your Mini Cooper SE does against the Corvette.
This Corvette TFL has may be the best bought vehicle they have ever had!! 😂😂 they get burned a lot, but price, quality, mileage etc,,,,,, nice deal!
Great video comparison
Great to see the c5 Vette. Still just a great car. Of course if you went for the z06 you would have both a faster car and a manual transmission :-). But where it would I am sure absolutely trounce the econobox is on track even slalom. The c5 vette (particularly the z06) was *quick* on track and genuinely fun to drive. Where's Paul??
Enjoy these videos very much. It is nice to have a good laugh for the day 🤣
What was the battery percentage on bolt ? When it’s over 90% it’s way faster than under - also sport mode helps a bit . It should’ve done way better on 1/4 mile
Guys what if any maintenance have you done on the Vette since you bought it ? Fluids spark plugs intake cleaned brakes etc ??
Tires?
Cool video! At altitude this is a great comparison. At sea level the Chevy is a second quicker.... altitude was mentioned so thanks. I too would like to see the Mini v Bolt match up! My neighbor has the electric Mini and it's nice. (In Boston everything is close so range isn't as much an issue)
The exhaust is everything
Did Tommy get in a knife fight?
I asked for Bolt vs Equinox, but this is better :) Even proves my point better.
How did you do the braking on the Bolt? There are 3 ways to stop the Bolt; steering column paddle regenerative braking, driving in low gear activates 1 pedal driving (just take your foot off the gas and it will stop the car) and the traditional foot pedal brake. You could actually use two or three at the same time and that would probably have stopped it quicker.
Now let’s see a track video of the two!
You don't just buy a vet because it's fast you buy a vet because it handles great great V8 sound comfort and a lot of style. You should try one against the new Corvette 🤠🇺🇲
I bought a c5 vette because it was 5k. And this guy ran a 15 sec 1/4 mile..in a 13 sec car......
Should try running the Bolt against the ‘88 C4 manual! Great video!
This is fun, keep it up!
I’ve been told that A4 trans really wakes up with 3.73 gears, a stall converter, and tune. The downshift would break your neck. A 4 speed auto can do some impressive things.
thanks car wow for the nice comparison
I sensed some very unexpected carwow references ^^
For a quarter-century-old car @ 5,500 ft altitude...the Vette did pretty well.
Except it was racing the base version of the CHEAPEST EV that is being sold today.
@@SmashTheNumbers I think the Chevy Bolt EV is a GREAT deal, but let's not get too carried away. Back in the day (26 years ago) a stock 1997 Corvette w/345HP LS1 would do 0-60 in 4.7 sec (@ sea level). While the Bolt runs a fairly impressive 6.4 sec 0-60 time. So obviously THIS C5 has suffered power loss and possible transmission issues over the course of 26 years not to mention the HP penalty 5,500' altitude brings. An altitude where most Americans don't live...and I'm an ex-resident of Colorado myself.
"The first C5 came standard with a 4-speed automatic transmission, and there was an available 6-speed manual tranny. It delivered style, sophistication, and performance. The curvy redesign was teamed with a new engine that was lighter than the one it had replaced while producing more horsepower. The new C5 was able to go from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds."
Put the race at sea level (ya know, where most people live) and the Vette would crush the Bolt.
Put a LT5 in that Corvette💪
A good test would be to dyno the vette. My 2002 camaro put done 308 whp when new. I use it on the road course and power is stock. I drag race every year to "check" power. 13.4 at 107 mph every year. (Street tires).
That is a great time! How many miles on it? Is it a manual or A4?
@Alex Smyk It has about 80k on the drivetrain. I originally had a silver z28 MT that I I crashed at Watkins Glen when the car had 40k mi on it. I bought a black 2002 z28 roller off Ebay and swapped the silver car drivetrain into it. Interestingly the black car was AT so it had 3.23 gears unlike the stock 3.42. It still ran 13.4 at 107 but across the line in 3rd. Recently I upgraded the rear diff and went with 3.73's. I'm curious if I can run a couple 10ths quicker now.
@@loum7008 You're making me want to swap gears on my vette so badly now. I have a C5 with the eco 2.73s in. I'm desperate to swap to some 3.42s.
Looks like Tommy was attacked by a cat.
Would have loved to seen the C4 included in the video
My experience with our Gen II Volts in the stoplight drags is I can beat most cars to 30 mph. I annihilate them across the intersection change lanes and let off.
LOL, Yeah, no HP loss from EV's at 5000 feet. That Vette also has REALLY tall gears.
Just another reason modern speed limits are stupid and outdated. Cars, and car safety features are so much better now. 60mph on a highway feels like I'm crawling...
True but the idiots driving make the roads more dangerous
@@bobsmitth497 I agree. The main idiots are the people driving slow in the left lane.
I won't say I don't miss certain things I've absolutely loved my Bolt. All the hate and shitting on it for being an EV isn't really deserved. All the recall meant for me was a free battery. Now I wouldn't say no to having a
90's vette of course, but the Bolt holds it own and is actually really fun to drive.
I wonder what the result would be with Bolt being swapped with wider and stickier tires.
Replaced my stock 215/50 Volt tires with 230/45 "hi perf" and I'm seeing considerably less launch tire spinning.
I'm actually planning to swap my Volt for a Bolt and the idea of modding it into a 4WD by swapping rear tires with hub motors is already itching me.
Very cool video
Person who says go first always wins, they have a slight head start since they are saying it and there's a slight delay in the transmission
They really need to make a Bolt that looks like the Vette.
That would be nice. I'm not saying the bolt isn't a nice looking vehical but .....
They recently made a Corvette hybrid AWD. It’s insanely fast.
GM should hot-hatch or rather lightning bolt the Bolt.
Doesn't even need more power, just suspension tweaks and trading away a bit of range for stickier tires.
That vette realllly needs some 3:73gears . Love the content though
Agreed the 2.73s are SO damned tall. I can't wait to get them out of mine. 3.42 would be much easier to find though as you can just buy the carrier right off a c5 or z06 manual.
The interesting thing is that lower income people that might would buy these budget EV's, likely wont pay enough taxes to get the full credit on the EV. The tax credit actually benefits higher income people. Kind of nuts if you put some though into it. Of course the salesperson or folks pushing the EV's wont ever really fully explain this to people.
Yep the people who run older less efficient cars because it's all they can afford are the ones you should be encouraging to go electric, not rich people that can afford a model S if they want one.
It always makes me wonder what the price of EVs would be if govetnment and politics stayed completely out of. I actually think they'd be more affordable if they didn't try to affect people's buying decisions.
Not only that but poor people typically live in apartments or mobile homes and lack the infrastructure to have at-home charging, making EVs far less convenient for them than internal combustion. The EV craze is yet more rich people telling the poor to just stop being so poor. SMH….
The tax system is made to screw the lower classes. I pay 30 percent while only making 50k. 😢
Another great video, but I'd still take the old 🦕.
Somebody needs to add a second drivetrain in the back of a bolt. Awd and double horsepower
Did you mention your location?
I have a bolt since 2017 and there are very few cars that can accelerate like it while weaving through traffic so effortlessly.
The 5200 ft. That took 2 seconds off the vettes qtr mile.
@Tommy Have to ask what happen to your cheek? Looks like a scar? I looked back in the videos and it wasnt there until 2 weeks ago. Just curious.
Scratch from his "puppy"
I was asking te same thing and thought Id look down just a bit in the comments. His big dog wouldn't leave little cat like scratches. Maybe his girl friends cat got pissy?
@@GettingthruLife pretty sure he’s dating Case
That vette has the highway rear end clearly 2.73's
Wonder how much better it would be with 3.15's
Damn enough already and bring back Nathan FFS
It's amazing how much power is lost a mile above sea level. That Corvette is a low 5 second car, 0-60. I bet it is in the low 6's at your elevation, a full second slower.
Probably more like 2 seconds slower at elevation.
If people describe your wife as, ‘ she’s got a nice personality vs. she’s hot. Then the Bolt is for you.🚙
The bolt is the lady in the streets but a freak in the bed 😂
Tests two Chevrolets, uses the Dodge logo font for graphics.
I hate the 4L60E... Get the T56... Or better yet, the T6060.
The manuals are not hard to find. In C5's, the take rate was well over 30%. Just search nationally. Hundreds will show up. I have a 2006 coupe, with a 6 spd.
🤔 126 ft for the Volt ? On a previous test the Volt did the braking test in less than 100 ft twice.
Different day, different conditions?
It's the bolt not the volt. Different models.
My Bolt goes 250 miles for just over Four dollars
No oil changed about zero maintenance but It sure doesn’t look as cool
They Chevy Spark is lighter, smaller and meaner than the Bolt. It has 400+ foot pounds of torque in clown car size. Also, the Bolt has tires specifically geared.for range and not performance.
They actually dumbbed down the newer models my 2017 does 14.9 on paper and a quicker 0-60 than advertising
Give the Corvette a proper transmission (6 gears or more, shorter small gears), then the story will be different.
LS1 Vette beats one of the cheapest EV's. Beating up on minivans next up. They didn't show the 2 strips of rubber you can lay till the tires are gone. That's way I'm getting one.
My three favorite angels yas
Lol if you're getting a Vette make sure it's a 6spd
Definitely shouldn’t have run an auto vette from that era 😂
Roman, do you really agree with your team putting annoying background music in videos? I was going to watch this video but right away Tommy was talking with this loud annoying music playing and I stoped watching the video. Roman will you please address this in one of your podcasts (talking Cars).
Some ppl might think this is a waste of time. I've certainly said that about some of TFL's videos. But this one is actually amazing because it really illustrates how technology changes performance over time. Now look- i've owned a few c5s, and the driving excitement beats the bolt all day long. thats why people still drive classic cars. But if there are ANY people left (looking at you, Cavuto) that still make these specious arguments that EVs arent the answer to our transportation problems, this kind of puts that argument away. My argument for a build has to be putting a c5 corvette body on a Mach-e platform. now that's a car.
Y’all got one slow c5, even at 5500’ perhaps a tuneup…
Vette still gets 30mpg on highway so no need for the bolt.
Tbf though, it's a lot cheaper to refill a Bolt
A vette with an automatic is much more boring than any regular commuter car.
What car has class what car has real engine and what car will not run out of power and you'll have to sit there and wait for 4 hours to charge it that's right the Corvette you can pull into a gas station and fill up your tank and keep driving while that stupid little bolt you'll have to sit there and wait for 4 hours for to charge and you'll be spending nearly as much money for the bolt on the charge as you will to fill up the tank on the Corvette so which car is better it's obvious the Corvette .
The Bolt has a $7500 tax credit, not a refund. You're only going to see a full $7500 off if you're due to pay at least $7500 in taxes for 2024. 💰
Vette all the way.
You'd lose him just 30 miles into the mountains lol
The vette will still outlive that fire-prone bolt
You’re claiming that Corvette ran a 15.4 lol!!!!!! They are high 13 second cars. Get down to sea level and run them again.
C5s are pretty slow, my cobalt ss supercharged would put a hurting on them.
Not only can many EV cars BLOW AWAY ICE CARS in pure acceleration, the ONLY REASON the BOLT loast to the Vette is the mere fact of a SMALL EV motor and lesser tires being present on the Chevy Bolt!
In the next FEW WEEKS, not only is brand new set of EV battery technologies being introduced but also different types of PERMANENT MAGNETS that have Tesla-scale EM field strengths (i.e. a unit of magnetic field-strength and NOT the Tesla car company!) are ALSO coming. It used to be that Neodymium and Cobalt-Samarium rare earth magnets were the BIGGEST DEAL in EV motor magnet technology BUT NOW, much newer "Liquid Magnet" technology that bests Neodymium by quite a significant amount (i.e. by at least 50x) having IMPULSE STRENGTHS into the MANY TESLA LEVELS (One Tesla = 10,000 Gauss) which means TORQUE will go right off the scales allowing much faster acceleration and better towing!
This ALSO MEANS MUCH BETTER TIRES will be needed in order to translate EV motor torque into actual forward movement! And because "Liquid Magnets" use no rare earths, the costs to make EV motors will SUDDENLY DROP by an order of magnitude AND will be much more environmentally-sound in terms of materials needed to make Liquid Magnet EV Motors!

@@maj429 NCA - North Canadian Aerospace (i.e. an under-the-radar all-Canadian aerospace company) has been developing reversible-consumptibe-anode/cathode-process Aluminum-Sulfur batteries for almost 20 years now which have 8x the energy density of Lithium Ion.
I have personally driven the Ford F450 Superduty Dually test mule truck which had its engine, fuel tank and drivetrain replaced with the new battery system. It can carry 4 passengers of 250+ lbs (113 kg) each AND still tow 25,000 lbs (11,339 kg) for 1600 miles (2574 km) on a single charge while driving the 8.5% up and down hilly grades of the Western Canadian highway system in BOTH -40C freezing winters AND +40C hot summer temperatures with no issue.
I consult to the parent company so I get to see all the GOOD STUFF coming out! We even Sheet Graphene Supercapacitors that can charge 500 KWh batteries (i.e. 3.5x the power of the one in the Ford F150 Lightning which is 133 KWh) in just FOUR MINUTES!
So YUP! Looks like the driving range issue and even the charging speed issue IS NOW SOLVED as of 2023!
V
EV any day!
Well, the Corvette will still be running and driving great in 30 years while the EV will be in a battery "reconditioning" yard in 5.
No, it won't. I expect a 15-20 year lifespan by which time third-party backup to keep them going longer will be available. Eventually road salt and rust will get most of them, like everything else, where applicable.
But a C5 is at the bottom of its' depreciation curve right now while the Bolt, being brand-new, is by definition at the top of its'.
Do you have a source for this claim? Virtually ever Volt every produced is still on the road and running fine. They came out in 2010.
Simply not true
The Bolt is way more practical as a commuter, but the 'Vette is probably lots more fun. The 'Vette will also still be worth something after 10 years.
Compare them in warm weather and ask them to turn and this isn't even close
Bolt has a very low COG. I am not so sure.
Sell both of them, quick buy a Model 3 LR while Tesla is discounting and Fed makes $7500 tax credit available???
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
You did not launch your Bolt right. I eat Corvettes all the time. I even had a Ferrari driver with his mouth wide open side by side at 80 MPH. There is AI in the Bolt controller it can be programmed to launch faster the more you do that.
Try racing at sea level, the Vette will put bus lengths between it and the bolt.
TFLbid's? Looks like old Doug'y got some competition.....
Doug is trying to make money. TFL is not.
Any tesla what so ever would eat that vette
OMG TOMMY. everyone. please. stop calling 20k cheep. 17k after credits? without that. like. 17k can get a person through half a year of rent depending on where you live. thats still a LOT of money. for a new car.... if it was like that without credits id be impressed and with credits to bring it down to about 10k id buy it in a heartbeat
You can get a Volt in that price range today USED. And if you find one at a Dealer, you can get an extra $4K USED Tax credit.
Yep, exactly. When you take debt out of the equation the prices become even more unrealistic. These things are not cheap.
@@rnt45t1 Operating costs should be ADDED to the equation. When you do that, you realize that the cost to run a Bolt (operating and maintenance costs) v. a old, under 20MPG ICE vehicle, may be so low that it completely offsets the higher payment. Plus I do not see them depreciating much because of value of time saved via access to HOV lanes and the new $4000 USED EV tax credit. There is definitely gonna be a "FLOOR" to how low the price of the cheapest used EV will be.
@@SmashTheNumbers I'm sorry but there is just no way you can argue that financing a brand new vehicle is cheaper than a $15,000 car you pay cash for. We're never going to be able to have a conversation about this because you refuse to see the truth.
@@rnt45t1 I leased a Volt for $318 a month because I was able to have the finance company take the $7500 tax credit (and the title) and then apply it as a downpayment on the lease. I probably saved about $150 a month in operating costs v. an old ICE vehicle based on my daily driving needs. My net cost was $168/month and I did not have to worry about any out of warranty issues or depreciation. Cost of operation is a huge factor in my case. Plus during those three years, I invested in Apple and Google Stock which each more than doubled in value during that time, instead of having my money "stuck" in a depreciating asset.
There are a lot of factors to consider when making a financial decision. Good to go through all of them.
I drive a bolt and it launches better than this
Driver errors
Them ugly ass wheels on the vette slow it down! lol
Don't trust that race
Does anyone care about either of these cars?
🙄 pointless
If you wanna drag race EV’S…… tha model 3 n I3 bmer would’ve been more sense.
I know which one would will keep you single.
Lol probably the corvette, if you’ve ever actually spent time around women….
The old Vette. Can you ask a harder question next time?
If you seek women who chooses you based on what you drive then the personality is lacking.
Shouldn't need a car to get women.
😂
What would you want to pick up a girl in? The I am a man that sits down and pees machine or a vette? That is the question!
😂
I've seen Bolts around town and they are very ugly cars.
