he was so careful to do the exact same things like getting the same room , same time , etc etc ....... but he should of thought ahead and never bothered to find out how come he didn't stay with her back in 1912 .....what was the reason he came back maybe he could of changed something ......or the old lady could of warned him when she gave him the watch .....something happens evolving the suit he is wearing that takes him back to the present .
Me and my mom always laugh at this scene--she loves this movie and the music. She says she remembers past life when she was very happy during this time lmao. Love my mom.
Maybe you should watch this movie. Actors and actresses potray many parts in many other projects and movies, good or bad. That's precisely why they are in the acting profession. This movie is a truly super great movie that has it's many ups and downs, one big down is as you have seen, the very end as after working so hard to be with Elise McKenna, and being with her, then being taken back to the modern timeline and away from his only true love within his heart.
My question is...why didn't he wait until he wasn't exhausted af to try to travel back? it obviously didn't work because he was too tired from the first trip. Eat. get some sleep. and try again. I mean you proved you can time travel so you wouldn't miss anything if you traveled to the moment you disappeared...LUL im overthinking this too much
Yes, one thinks about things like that. My feeling is that even if he did go back to her a second time, he still would have had to leave her time period eventually to avoid eventually encountering his own birth and there then being two of him existing in the same timeline
I see comments below asking if he actually disappeared in Elise’s perspective and if he actually traveled back in time. This is my interpretation. He did travel in time. If anyone is paying attention, when he got sucked back in his own time, he is already in a different room and not the room he started in. Unless of course he was sleep walking. And no he didn’t disappear in thin air during those times he met Elise. He may have gone from her life some other ways, like her manager might have actually done something to him to separate them and they never got to see each other ever again until that night she saw him at the play and gave him the watch. From her longing to see him, she have believed in herself that the present Richard is the past Richard. It’s like a reincarnation and it so happen that both Richards look the same and has the same name. They reconnected somehow in the present time so the present Richard would seek her from the past. Hope this makes sense.
remember before he left he was putting coins in his pockets then realized it was current date coins and put them in a bowl in the closet ........he must of missed one
@@TheGrafton12 that’s a great theory! The film never explains why her manager insists that he knows who Richard is. There could’ve been a great plot twist with him also being a time traveler. However Elise’s biography states that her manager died on the Lusitania; if he was either clairvoyant or a time traveler, he would never have boarded that ship.
My mom watched this with me when I was about 5 years old. This scene was heartbreaking. But, I got scared by this scene, that I just started crying uncontrollably. It's a good movie, but I don't like romances because of this. And I've never wanted to see it again because of it. Mainly because of this and the ending. My mom adores this movie, but I don't think she fully understood how I felt.
Beautiful Movie There is a reason Nikola Tesla died penniless. In the fall of 1886, the backers disagreed with Tesla, tricked him out of his money and patents, and left him penniless. “Penny Penny Penny” - Sheldon Cooper A multiple of threes, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!
I never understood how this scene played out ever since i was a kid. So was he dreaming the whole time and when he saw the coin he woke up from his dream? Or, did he really time travel and when he saw the coin, he slowly vanished in thin air and thats why she freaked out, calling his name reaching for him. I need closure on this after 30+ years so chime in please! 🤣
Well he couldn't have been just dreaming or old Jane Seymour wouldn't have come to his play in 1980. Unless he somehow made her dream the same thing, that is.
Ok, this is a serious question. We know how the trip back to 1980 looked for Richard: he saw the 1912 reality moving away from him rapidly; it's convincing. But the thing is: how did it work for Elise? Did Richard vanish in thin air? Did he fly away?
I think he collapsed to the floor and vanished. That's when Elise knew that he had time traveled, and she probably knew he was gonna be born later in her liftime and was just waiting for the right moment to give back the watch he had given her.
The fact that her panic slowly grows and escalates seems to indicate that he gradually faded into thin air; perhaps a void in time and space opened behind him and sucked him in. At first, she thinks she’s seeing things, but as he reaches towards her and becomes more faint and flies backward into the void, she lets out that bloodcurdling scream. No way anyone could recover from seeing something like that out of nowhere.
What a strange jump cut at 0:22. Some lines must’ve been cut from this scene, because all he says is “You will” very simply and then it suddenly cuts to her laughing as if he said something funny. He also seems to be laughing, although he wasn’t laughing in the previous angle. I don’t see why the scene needed to be cut down. The more dialogue they have planning their future, the more devastating it is when he’s sucked away.
I love the movie because I'm an incurable romantic but I've always felt the writer/writers didn't handle the whole time travel scenario very well. Objectively, its absurd on so many levels. What I think would have been much more effective and realistic would have been to have Richard see the penny and then as he looks up from it, he's back in 1979, lying on the same surface he was when he went back in time. That way, its still heartbreaking to the audience(and Richard obviously) but it would have presented the idea that maybe he dreamt those days with her, as we all have had dreams where we're so incredibly happy in them, only to wake up to reality. I also would have never had her as an old woman come to him, nor show any records of him having been at the hotel. This would have created a much more ambiguous story and to me, much more interesting.
Which is only fitting, considering how abruptly it started. Usually if a total stranger creeps around a woman for about 24 hours, she doesn't fall in love with him.
I don't understand why he didn't try to travel back in time again. He did it once so he knew it could be done. One of the most frustrating moments in movie history.
@@bknwuzheer1 ok but i don't understand what he was going to achieve by being there longer? His body in the current time was going to die eventually without any food or water. the movie has too many plot holes to feel real.
@@iamsobeautifulomg another thing I’ve always wondered: after he got sucked back, did anyone else who had known him at the hotel notice his mysterious disappearance? Did Elise tell anyone about his disappearance?
@@nancyhey1012 yeah this is back from time when people didn't really think or care about plot holes. I think it would've been a much better movie, had they just made it as real time travel or a dream or something magical that couldn't be explained. while this scenario was more "realistic" in a way, it has too many inconsistencies.
@@iamsobeautifulomg I think you’re right, they didn’t really care about the plot holes or inconsistencies. They wanted it to be a touchy-feely kind of movie not a thinking kind of movie.
I remember seeing this in the early 80s. I couldn’t quite grasp the story as I was 6 or 7, tops. The ending absolutely freaked me out. Also, for years I got this movie and “Time After Time” confused with each other.
Way to go, Superdumbass. But do you want to know how this scene went down in the book? Richard was standing outside her door when he discovered the penny. I can imagine that Elise was slowly breaking down when she noticed he was gone.
Whenever a movie or tv show uses language taken from Twitter or online discourse, it’s like I’m seeing the penny and I’m immediately whisked away from any immersion in the story.
What do you think happened when he pulled that Penny out, I’m thinking on what truly happened, he blacked out and he died for real in 1912, meaning he was in a alternate reality where he met Elise. when Elise was scream his name Richard, Richard, RICHARD, that meant Richard died in front of her in that room. When Elise met Richard many years later, she gave him his watch back saying to him “ come back to me “. That’s just a theory though.

he was so careful to do the exact same things like getting the same room , same time , etc etc ....... but he should of thought ahead and never bothered to find out how come he didn't stay with her back in 1912 .....what was the reason he came back maybe he could of changed something ......or the old lady could of warned him when she gave him the watch .....something happens evolving the suit he is wearing that takes him back to the present .
Me and my mom always laugh at this scene--she loves this movie and the music. She says she remembers past life when she was very happy during this time lmao. Love my mom.
Watched this for the first time last night, something about it really took hold of me. The music I think.
Well then you'd probably like most of the James Bond films that came out between 1963 and 1987, because the same composer did the music for those.
So housekeeping and the hotel are supposed to wall off that room he’s in for 100 years while he’s out of body time traveling?
never watched this movie. I know just Christopher as superman always. I will always remembered him as superman not anything else.
If you love time travelling movies you'd probably like it.
Hate how as he is getting along with Elise he gets ripped out of time
they say that Christopher got tired of his Supehero roles and all the fan fare noise he decided to get this role in SOMEWHERE to get out of it
I think he could have got back to 1912 but he give up beautiful film always makes me cry 😭
I still remember my sister shouting nooooo!
Top 5 time travel PIX of all time!
@@nancyhey1012 wow never thought of that!! So interesting!!
@@MichaelEDemuro think their whole lives are in a time loop ...... to repeat over and over again ..
Also, Arthur asked him early on in the movie if they've met before, which also suggests he did travel back in time.
I saw this as a child when this movie was new. It still breaks my heart. I was actually hesitant to see this part again.
remember before he left he was putting coins in his pockets then realized it was current date coins and put them in a bowl in the closet ........he must of missed one
Another youtube video had a theory that Elise's Manager was also a Time Traveller and slipped the coin into Richard's pocket to sabotage him
@@TheGrafton12 That's a bit of a
trail-off isn't it!?
@@TheGrafton12 that’s a great theory! The film never explains why her manager insists that he knows who Richard is. There could’ve been a great plot twist with him also being a time traveler. However Elise’s biography states that her manager died on the Lusitania; if he was either clairvoyant or a time traveler, he would never have boarded that ship.
@@12classics39 I think her manager just had prophetic/psychic dreams.
That scene has been in my mind for a long time
This movie is so beautiful yet so devastatingly painful.
A recognition that he does not. Belong where he is
This was way more brutal to her than him. He could work out what happened, but not her. It took her many years to sort of get it.
Beautiful Movie
There is a reason Nikola Tesla died penniless.
In the fall of 1886, the backers disagreed with Tesla, tricked him out of his money and patents, and left him penniless.
“Penny Penny Penny” - Sheldon Cooper
A multiple of threes,
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!
That’s why I don’t keep change in my pocket no more….😢.
You're a time traveler?
Ok, this is a serious question. We know how the trip back to 1980 looked for Richard: he saw the 1912 reality moving away from him rapidly; it's convincing. But the thing is: how did it work for Elise? Did Richard vanish in thin air? Did he fly away?
I think he collapsed to the floor and vanished. That's when Elise knew that he had time traveled, and she probably knew he was gonna be born later in her liftime and was just waiting for the right moment to give back the watch he had given her.
My guess would be he faded back in a wormhole, smaller and smaller till he vanished.
When she gave him the watch why she didn't tell him to take that penny out his pocket
That would never have happened with Bitcoin.
True
Lol good one
not his lucky penny
In the book, that is essentially what did happen.
Well that was an abrupt end to that relationship.
Earlier in the movie it states that the hypnosis greatly weakens the body; he was too weak to try again afterwards
He should have checked the coin before he hypnotize himself in the first place. None of this will ever happen.
Yes very true
i was horrified by this scene but so heartbreaking at the same time
Fly back around the earth, Superman
I remember seeing this in the early 80s. I couldn’t quite grasp the story as I was 6 or 7, tops. The ending absolutely freaked me out. Also, for years I got this movie and “Time After Time” confused with each other.
He needs a plan B. He needs a Delorean with a Flux Capacitor and then speed it up to 88 miles per hour.
That penny was the biggest jumpscare ever
Yes, that happened
Way to go, Superdumbass.
But do you want to know how this scene went down in the book? Richard was standing outside her door when he discovered the penny. I can imagine that Elise was slowly breaking down when she noticed he was gone.
Cazzo.
I imagine she was slowly breakdancing. 💃
They don't make movies like this anymore 😪
I love him
Jane Seymour is so hot in this movie.
mhm
I would not put the "hot"word to appreciate or describe her beauty.i would use the sentence "she is the most gorgeous women i have ever seen"
I cant believe this movie bombed. It became a cult classic
Whenever a movie or tv show uses language taken from Twitter or online discourse, it’s like I’m seeing the penny and I’m immediately whisked away from any immersion in the story.
Great movie
Wow she is gorgeous!
They just don't make movies like this anymore. It is right up there with "the way we were" "Splendor in the grass" "For the boys" Amazing acting-
What do you think happened when he pulled that Penny out, I’m thinking on what truly happened, he blacked out and he died for real in 1912, meaning he was in a alternate reality where he met Elise.
when Elise was scream his name Richard, Richard, RICHARD, that meant Richard died in front of her in that room.
When Elise met Richard many years later, she gave him his watch back saying to him “ come back to me “.
That’s just a theory though.
Happens to all people in real time whose lives were destroyed by others
