Are you fishing for requests? You're in luck then 🙂 You might want to react to an amazing drummer that has a similar feel to the backbeat like Gavin here: Christian Eigner Never heard of him? He's just the drummer for a little band called Depeche Mode. With DM "Walking in my shoes" is a tip, but he also has a demo video on YT for austrian audio that might be fun to watch to all the drum-geeks here. Check him out, because this man has waaaaay too few reactions on RUclips
I was at his clinic in a small drum store - about 50 people- and he asked for questions. Each of us fed him a question about Anesthetize. He showed us the chops. After about the 5th question he smiled and said “yeah I can see where this is going, I might as well play the whole thing through” to which we all cheered. Being only a few feet from the riser was brilliant, every bit of stick action was clear.
His level of improv is off the chart. Listening to that part in “Way Out Of Here” on the album version is insane. But then every live version is different and just as insane! I honestly have no idea how someone can be that on-the-spot creative and precise all at the same time. Just ridiculous.
Gavin Harrison is the most tasteful drummer I've ever heard and I'm a huge Portnoy fan. I know I'm not a patreon, but I hope you will check out Marco Minnemann w/ Steven Wilson jammin' Luminol. I'm not even a drummer, just a huge fan of Prog rock especially: Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Pineapple Thief, and Dream Theater and I love your channel. Thanks man, rock on and be safe.
His playing is so tasteful. Sometimes the huge amount of bells and effects gets a little pretentious but he does it in a way that’s just... chef’s kisses 👌
Hey look at me in the little box! My first time in the dog box. That's me in the corner... That's me out of the spotlight....losing.... Reminds me of a song!
Gavin is musical essence above all. He's anything but a rhythm or beat provider. For me is of the most musical drummers, since he takes a song and he 'musicalizes' it (I'm likely making up the word :-). Thanks for your view.
The mountain other drummers are climbing, Gavin is already on his way back, having planted his flag at the top long time ago. Musically, he's untouchable. My absolute favorite drummer bar NONE and one of the very best to ever approach the instrument. Also... his stint with Porcupine Tree led to some of the best modern music given to mankind. Ever. Fact.
Vivaldo excellent comment.... Porcupine Treeis phenomenal band, and Gavin lifts them even higher... As a guitar player first thing that i noticed that this guy plays this drums, all the beats, sounds and percusions are amazing... Backbeat is amazing and flow also.... Perfect drummer... For me top 10 that ever lived....
Nice reaction and thank you also, great advices during the video! Sound of muzak was the first song of porcupine tree and Gavin Harrison I discovered in 2004 when I got the sheets for the drum part as a playalong. I learned A LOT from that and after you get comfortable with the rhythm it's much fun to play! And sure when watching Gavin it looks so easy and he is so chilled, with even more complex fills than in the original song. And as you said, soooo so tasty and great musicality
I remember be taken to a Gavin Harrison live master class by a drummer friend (I'm a bass player but dables on the kit). Just an amazing experience. Incredible to watch, really humble down to earth guy with next level talent!
I think the bass drum-snare beat is actually 7/16 long, not 7/4 long. Furthermore, I don't think that's the beautiful or clever part of the groove, as the part is written in 7/4 (the main riff going repeatedly in 3/4 and 4/4) so the drum beat naturally fits the length of the riff (you can count Harrison hit the snare four times every one cycle of the riff). The beauty is in how Harrison not only has managed to find a groove that doesn't go perfectly in sync together with the riff (meaning 7/16 does not add up to either 3/4 or 4/4 that well) yet supports the guitar figure wonderfully while resolving every four cycles of the groove (aka. one cycle of the guitar riff), but he also manages to keep a steady quarter note hi-hat pulse on top of the groove, making it easy for the listener to think that the verse is in 4/4!
Gavin Harrison is the PERFECT drummer. Your critique of him, like that of him on Anesthetize, is spot on! He's my favourite drummer today! I saw Simon Phillips at his Auckland drum clinic in '79 or '80, (I'm from Glenfield, now living in London) and never thought I'd see better than him ever, but man, Gavin is something REALLY special! Now, if you haven't done a Jojo Mayer appraisal please check out: Jojo Mayer & NERVE, LIVE - Drumeo Festival 2020. It's a brilliant short clip, 4:54 but he's well worth watching. He's a single kick drummer, orthodox AND matched grip and he's "different" from everyone else. Think you'll like this clip!
Yeah mu position exactly for N°1. I though to give it a go but the complete kit rounds at about 20-25K $. Kit of my dreams :) Second I would put Simon Philips's Yamaha kit though.
King Crimson - Indiscipline (Live), if you enjoy Gavin's drumming, how about two other drummers on stage playing the same song and riffing off one another in an improvised break? What could be better!!
Sir. I have been a fan of Prog since the late 60s on and discovered Porcpine Tree in the 90s. I have been a fan ever since and have seen them live in Glasgow. However, I have learnt so much watching your reactions. I am paying much closer attention to all drumming now. You have educated me at my tender age of 69. My vocabulary now contains words such as dynamic and clean in a drumming context. I look out for ghost notes. So much more. And what is more you have entertained me with your captions and witty asides. Thank you.
Loved the video... I couldn't keep time to save my life.. but I'm experienced enough to know a true craftsman when I see one.. It's always sublime listening to Porcupine Tree with Gavin. Watched a promotional interview that Steve Wilson and Richard Barbierrie were doing for their new album... and one of the questions was about how they liked the youtibe reaction videos to their music and they both looked at each other and said... "it's all about Gavin isn't it..."... Well, Porcupine Tree is much more than that but at least so many people out there actually appreciate him for the musician he is. Keep on Rocking.
And mind you, THIS is the song Gavin specifically suggested to be in the setlist in every show to cool off and chill out. This was the "laid back and relaxing" song to him.
Loved this. I’ve enjoyed your reactions to some of the monster metal drummers, who I would never have heard otherwise because that’s not my taste in music, but this is 100% in my wheelhouse musically, so it’s just that much more enjoyable.
Been waiting for this one He talks about the song in this or another clinic, and he said this song was an example where the beat came first, all other instruments came after
Yes, I remember him talking about a song where the beat comes first, and Steve Janssen's influence on his compositions. But I believe he was speaking about Bonnie the Cat.
If you really want a tasty Gavin Beat... (Gav brought the beat to the band BTW, for them to fit music around his cool beat), you MUST hear "Bonnie the Cat". It's In 4/4 this song has Gavin's most unique way of tricking the ear to make you feel like the song is Not is 4/4. But it is so solid that the trained ear will spot it. Please give it a listen Andrew, even if you don't make a Video on it. Cheers Mate
Try out Gavin live with Porcupine Tree in ''Hate Song''. The song is insane from start to finish and it contains an amazing ''improvisation'' section which is beyond incredible.
I've been watching your videos for a little while now buddy and they never fail to be funny and informative. I particularly enjoy the positivity that you bring to each video, and will continue to watch well into the future I am sure. Cheers from Spain, from a Brit, Lee!
This was the song that introduced me to Porcupine Tree (and Gavin). Heard it on the radio and was floored. Later learned that the beat was Steven Wilson's, but Gavin makes it his own. A perfect drummer.
As a guitar player the ghost notes seem to remind me that the snare is still there. Yes the texture it lays underneath is the key but especially in signatures outside of 4/4 it helps the groove move along from phrase to phrase. It both adds dynamics to the crack of the snare but softens it on the other side, on the way to next crack
I was 2 albums into Porcupine Tree and knew Harrison was the best combination of chop, musicality and drum sound I had ever heard. Even if he not technically the “best”...or even if he was. I really like Jarsombeck, Lewis, Lang and Donati, as well as many more. But to my ears, Harrison and Greb sound the best. Just way they hit that drum...
Gavin... modern day drum God. I saw him at a small venue clinic (20 people max) What I took away from that clinic you hit on perfectly Andrew. In fact Gavin made a massive point about playing the song. He may dress it up with his prowess, however he never forgets (like counting back in) that his part is to keep a solid meter. A lot of PT and TPT fans grew from Steven Wilson's/Bruce Soord's amazing song writing. Gavin explained to our clinic that he must lay down a foundation for his part so the non-trained ear, the non-musician can feel a constant pulse, even through odd meters and such.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Do also check out Threatening War from the same album. His use of his finger tips to create ghost notes while playing rim clicks is amazing.
That's a tough call for me. His work with Porcupine Tree ('In Absentia', 'Deadwing', 'Fear of a Blank Planet', 'The Incident') is just as good. 'White Mist' reminds me of "Anesthetize". Honestly, Pineapple Thief sounds a lot like PT nowadays, imho. You should check out 'Blood' & ' Fire Make Thunder' from OSI (Gavin drums on those albums as well).
@@Guppusmaximus this is all true. Even though Sound of Muzak has been analysed to death (for good reason), Gavin still has some killer tracks in Porcupine Tree.
Sound of Muzak is a great tune, but for a video reaction, I think looking at his performance on 19 Days would be more adequate. I'd love to see a reaction on Dave Weckl's Access Denied too ;)
One of my favorite songs I amateurishly try to cover whenever I can. In this live gig he'd put it to eleven though, much more stuff going on than in the studio album.
You mention how awesome he caught that guitar riff and it was , but did you also notice how he caught the Bass melody on the way out of that guitar guitar riff?? That was even next level. Please tell me you heard that bit as well?
I understand if you want pillows in your bass drums, gels on your snair and toms because whatever works, but... My thinking is get and tune a set the way you want it to sound without pillows and gels. If you feel you need pillows and gels then do you have the right set and heads?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think it worked out really well were you in the little box for most of it, but when you pause the video you are in the big box! I liked that!

His version at the modern drummer festival was better for me the pulse is always bang on but when he does his embellishments that do vary per recording that I've seen the MD festival stands out
i feel a good word for gavin harrison is....refined! can't say much more than that..."with impurities or unwanted elements having been removed by processing!" A mature approach to drumming...
I think it's fascinating, that the initial groove was written by Steven Wilson on a drum computer and then been enhanced by the playing of Gavin. He once said in an drumeo interview, that this counts as one of his most iconic grooves but it was not written by him in the first place. But nontheless he is the one making it great and bringing it to live. The combination Wilson and Harrison was the best! This is the video: ruclips.net/video/-qF5EgWGTsY/видео.html
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think you should give this version a shot too: ruclips.net/video/O3h7Xbzd2bE/видео.html It's from the same session as the "Anesthetize" Video you reacted to. In my opinion it's even more impressive than this version here.

Gavin Harrison is probably one of the best musicians in modernity. To describe him as merely a “drummer” is to completely ignore his incredible musicality.
I'd never really thought about it... but there is a distinction between seeing all of the video (but smaller) vs seeing most of the video (minus the upper corner - but bigger). Seems like no matter which corner he choses, he'll be covering some part of the kit. Interesting.
It actually is a 7/8 resolving on the second bar. And THIS, is what makes Gavin’s groove mindblowing. He calls it « overriding ». Steady eight (or double 16th) on the ride with bell on every quarter and BAM, the song turns into a seemingly 4/4. But it really is not. Count the guitar when the song starts. It’s 7/8. Considering the theme of the song, about the way music is going down…..this is absolutely pure genius. I’m actually surprised (and somewhat sad) Andrew didn’t catch that most amazing detail of the song (drum-wise) and mentionned nothing about it. But I admit, it requires pristine listening to go « Holy Gavin magic :o!!!! ».
@@andreameda i ment for most listeners.😌. As Drummer i listen different but you described exactly what i mean😌 The thing i do allot is switching after 2 bard 7/8 to 4/4 so it’s doesn’t: (Quote from a non drummer friend ) : “Feels like a weird thing” He said “ i can’t listen because of all the complex things i hear”

I would posit he is the or one of the tastiest drummers in prog.
Totally!
He's the tastiest drummer EVER
You mention how awesome he caught that guitar riff and it was , but did you also notice how he caught the Bass melody on the way out of that guitar guitar riff??
That was even next level. Please tell me you heard that bit as well?
Love the channel man, check out gavins playing on the song trains
I understand if you want pillows in your bass drums, gels on your snair and toms because whatever works, but... My thinking is get and tune a set the way you want it to sound without pillows and gels. If you feel you need pillows and gels then do you have the right set and heads?
He's Gavin Harrison and I think he just might know what works best.
Next time pls do Gavins work on what happens now
Sounds great Vivek!
Would be great pick.
I like you in the big box!!!! We get to see your reactions clearer!
Good to know!
Back in the big box next time!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think it worked out really well were you in the little box for most of it, but when you pause the video you are in the big box! I liked that!
Re your comment about the pillow - never, NEVER, stand directly in front of Gav's unmuted bass drum!
Definitely check out Dirty Loops song Work Shit Out. Drummer is Aron Mellergard.
Check out this better version: ruclips.net/video/O3h7Xbzd2bE/видео.html
and Gavin Harrison: The Sound Of Muzak Groove - Drum Lesson (Drumeo) : ruclips.net/video/-qF5EgWGTsY/видео.html
Thank you!
His version at the modern drummer festival was better for me the pulse is always bang on but when he does his embellishments that do vary per recording that I've seen the MD festival stands out
Gavin is the perfect man.
i feel a good word for gavin harrison is....refined! can't say much more than that..."with impurities or unwanted elements having been removed by processing!" A mature approach to drumming...
NICE! Agree :)
2:25 pic comments this sick fill accurately.
I'd love to see you react to Marco Duplantier as well!
Drummer for a metal band named Gojira.
This is the video:

Great stuff :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I think you should give this version a shot too:

It's from the same session as the "Anesthetize" Video you reacted to. In my opinion it's even more impressive than this version here.
Where can i buy the Coffee Mug? The Link don´t work.
Have you turned your mike down yet? I know this is two years ago, but so many of your vids I've watched recently have you bellowing at me if I want hear the music at a decent volume. Ya killing us!
Enjoy your vid's. Please try bobby jarzombek "School". Bobby is easily in the 'monster' drummer class of drummers.
Check out Jojo Mayer & Nerve: JABON
Gavin Harrison with pineapple Thief: Threatening War
RUclips thr same song gavin has a few versions of the drums only and they all differ a little which is cool to watch
Oh that sounds great Mike!

I rock a pillow in my bass drum too :)
Me too! ALWAYS
I feel like this is one you could reasonably do a cover of, you think you might give it a shot?
I'm already learning a zillion songs per week for teaching and gigs!
I like your thinking though :)
Andrew, you gotta check his facebook post showing the wear on his snaredrum head. Speaking of consistency.

Love all your content! I've been playing the reaction playlist for the past two days lolol. Please react to Ben Andersons cover of CINEMA by Skrillex. So cool and different
Thanks for watching. And thanks for the recommend!
You should try "KRIMH - Septicflesh - Prototype"
Has there been a video for Jojo Mayer yet?
Please do Gergo Borlai Zildjian Live
You must have mastered the simpler fundamentals to build on top of to get to this proficiency level.
💯
If you see this comment, and you decide to actually follow though with it, please check out Elliot Hoffman of Car Bomb. He has some improvisation videos on his RUclips, and drumcams of his stuff with Car Bomb. Technical genius.
Gavin Harrison is probably one of the best musicians in modernity. To describe him as merely a “drummer” is to completely ignore his incredible musicality.
I like when you’re the big box mate
I'd never really thought about it... but there is a distinction between seeing all of the video (but smaller) vs seeing most of the video (minus the upper corner - but bigger). Seems like no matter which corner he choses, he'll be covering some part of the kit. Interesting.
This could be a debate for the ages! HAHA
Please .. do .. Manu Katché !
You’ll not be disappointed !
omg i didnt find this video b4.....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarg
Joking aside...thanks for introducing me to this music!
If this was suggested by Icarus Lives, can I suggest that very song too, since it's a banger from Periphery? XD
Oh wow!
Has he done any Aron Mellergård?!? Easily a top pick 🙌🏼 Also, love the vids. Thank you!
Are you a New Zealander? Your accent does sound like that.
Mr. Rooney. Please react to Sebastian Lanser.
What about Benny Greb?Grebfruit!!!
And the funny thing is. The main beat/ pattern is a 4/4.
As Drummer i listen different but you described exactly what i mean😌
The thing i do allot is switching after 2 bard 7/8 to 4/4 so it’s doesn’t:
(Quote from a non drummer friend ) :
“Feels like a weird thing”
He said “ i can’t listen because of all the complex things i hear”
Check out Madden Klass Meinl Performance
Thank you Imran!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums your videos are kinda fun :)
Sacrifice single pedal speed without muting (to hold the tension of the drumhead)
Gavin's cymbal crashes/accents almost stand alone, as in he doesn't always accent a crash w/ bass drum or drum...
