Neil Peart wrote the introduction to Gavin Harrison's book "Rhythmic Composition: Featuring the Music of Porcupine Tree" from 2014. In the intro he is talking about listening to Gavin's music and says "Yes - if I could play like that, that is how I would play." Pretty high praise from The Professor.

I saw Porcupine Tree in Greece ages ago. An average lets say fan of the band. I remember very vividly that the whole concert I was turning to my friend in awe after every god damn unbelievable fill he did. He totally destroyed my mind and melted my face. By the end of the show I had that feeling of desperation that this is cannot be real, cannot be happening... So many concerts all these years pre-covid. Enjoyed immensly Billy Cobham, loved Danny Carey, adored my childhood hero Ian Pace, had huge respect for Mike Portnoy, Mike Bordin is a beast, traveled many miles just to see Dave Lombardo... Harrison is by far the best drummer I have seen live. Hands down.

He said he recognizes that people are basically always going to hear his playing through microphones, whether it's on an album or in a concert setting, and so he basically doesn't pay much attention to the acoustic sound of the kit -- his focus is on what it sounds like through the microphones. So, he wears his in-ears, spends a lot of time on mic selection and placement, EQ and so on, to get the sound that he wants people to hear.

@@unidentified_flying_obscen3217 I am. If the majority of the die hard “Neal Peart” fan boys could read and understand drum notation they would know that Peart primarily played single stroke rolls in odd sticking patterns. He borrowed heavily from Bill Bruford (Yes/King Crimson) Michael Giles (King Crimson), Phil Collins (Genesis) and Carl Palmer (ELP/Asia). His drum solos were poor imitations of aspects of drum solos by Jon Bonham, Ginger Baker and Max Roach. As the great jazz fusion drummer Dave Weckl commented on Neal Peart’s playing style on February 4, 2016. “Dave said, "Well Neil has a very different approach to the drum kit. His style of drumming is very systematic where in the world of Jazz you need to develop more of a fluid style of play." Which is Weckl’s polite way of stating that Peart’s drumming is stiff and mechanical.

There is a lesser known Porcupine Tree song called What Happens Now where Gavin plays in 7/4 with overriding triplets on the cymbal in the later part of the song. Because of the weirdness of it, it takes three measures before it resolves and the cymbal is back on the beat. I've played some polyrhythms on piano before (not easy as you almost need to think of the parts independently with your brain). But doing it on an odd time signature is next level stuff and pretty mind blowing. Rhythmic Illusions is a DVD that Gavin put out that explains all of this stuff.

You said it! A machine! First time I ever saw this absolute weapon was in these modern drummer videos and ever since seeing them in 2010 I am hooked on everything he's played on. I went to see him at a clinic and actually got to meet him afterwards. Best 12 quid ever spent and I was lucky to win an A Custom off the raffle and he signed it underneath. It's still there to this day. The man is just on another level. Whilst there's no comparison to my playing ability and his, I think every drummer can take something away from his playing. The smallest nuances are really clever and detailed. He never loses sight of the groove either. You can pretty much bop your head to every single fill or odd time groove he thinks up. He will be, for me, forever the greatest to command a drum kit! 🥁

I had many years ago a group lesson with Gavin here in Italy. I've seen him warming up with a two hand simultaneous warm-up. Simply the skill level of his warm up exsercises are far beyond my top level of playing in ALL means, precision, timing, sound definition, control and also indipendence (the warm-up was coupled with a rotating pattern of accents with the feet that was down beat, up beat and three over four polyrithm)

This awesome thing about this clinic video segment is that it has an insane amount of variation over the original studio recording. Gavin always plays around with different fills, and this is just so delicious. He's a beast absolutely. The fact that this drumming goes on in a 17-minute long song. This was just a short bit from the full song.
If you haven't already discovered the drum duet between Gavin and Simon Phillips, you absolutely must. Part 4 especially blows my mind. They are awesome together. So creative.

Gavin also plays drums on the song "Flame" by Tim Bowness and Richard Barbieri (the keyboardist of Porcupine Tree).

I've seen Crimson about four times recently and what strikes me as a non drummer is how easy Harrison makes it look. Gavin is my favourite drummer - his precision and control is absolutely amazing - it's interesting that he says in his Book "Rhythmic Illusions" that the simple act of displacing a simple rock beat by one eight note and really getting that into your system makes you a much better at playing ordinary beats and you really hear it in his playing, everything he plays is so precise but still not mechanical, cause his sound and musicality is brilliant too.

What can you say, watching Gavin is just a special thing. I saw PT in Boston last year, and the memory is burned into my brain - Gavin can go from quiet, sparse, haunting rhythms to thunderous, polyrhythmic drums on the edge of total chaos, all with perfect eloquence and control. Despite totally locking down the groove at 5:21 he is aware enough to notice and make a small change to his hi-hat without skipping a beat. Being able to react seamlessly to something unexpected in the middle of playing just goes to show how much of a natural he is - so much spare mental capacity while playing a very technical piece.

I really love his little quick prrts decorating the beats. As well as the beautiful way of emphasizing the vocal lines with melodic cymbal hits. In a way you could remove the other instruments and still get the idea of the song's key elements. He includes both the important rhythm and melody bits of the other instruments in his drumming. But the bottom line still stands that he can play the basic beat with no extras and still sound groovy and powerful.
