    Recently saw a documentary on Porcupine Tree and just days before the band was about to go into the studio to record their first "big" album (i.e. they had a budget and big label support) the band lead Steven Wilson fired the drummer. He had no replacement and thought it was all going to fall apart but the keyboardist said "I know this fellow I played with a couple of times, he's pretty good. Want me to give him a call?" It was Gavin Harrison. Can you imagine that you're desperate and the only drummer you can find is Gavin Harrison?

    Gavin is not just a drummer, he is elite drummer. His virtuosity, feeling of the song, rhythm, and drums as an instrument above the chart. He is a sort of Van Gough of the drums art. His presence in any band says a lot of a band itself: PT, King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief, 05Ric - they all amazing bands. Drummers like GH are priceless.

    An inspiration for this song was the story of two Wisconsin girls who apparently killed themselves in a suicide pact. Arielle Daniel, 17, and Heather Bates, 14, were struck by an Amtrak train on November 12, 2005 in what was ruled a suicide, but was possibly an accident. Daniel was a huge Porcupine Tree fan and created the band's MySpace page - it was reported that she was listening to Porcupine Tree on her iPod when she died.
    "She also became a part of that song," Wilson told us. "The idea was very disturbing to me, that there were young people that would seek escape through such brutal,

    1st chuckle - "Mansplaining", 2nd chuckle - "7 minutes 55, that's a long one".
    Like many my age, I fell in love with the drums in the 1980s because of Neil Peart. I discovered Gavin Harrison a little more than a year ago and he has changed the way I listen to the instrument. Precision, musicality, timing, pocket, groove and restraint... those are now my measuring sticks.
    I heard Gavin say in an interview once that there will always be someone who can play faster. I can't remember his exact words but he was talking about serving the music. That is my favorite thing about Gavin Harrison, nothing ever seems out of place, it's never about him... I don't believe he even likes drum solos. It's always all about the song.
    For me, he creates a delightful tension in the music the keeps you comfortably on the edge of your seat. Does that make sense?
    The two biggest compliments I can pay him are 1) I never imagine anyone else playing his drum parts (although there are some good covers out there), and 2) he was apparently one of the aforementioned Neil Peart's favorite drummers.

    • @collinscollins5595
      @collinscollins5595 2 года назад

      But I would not play Gavin’s parts. I would play what I gleaned from him in the band I’m in. Among all my inspirations. Whether in life or drumming.

    • @meters_and_madness
      @meters_and_madness 2 года назад +1

      Neil Pert wrote a long (and generous) forward to Gavins book "Rhythmic Illusions". He had a deep admiration for Gavins approach to the drums. He said something along the lines of "If I could play that way, that is the way I would play." Truly remarkable. Gavins approach and philosophy towards music could benefit any musician, no matter the instrument.
      As a side note, I'm going to meet him and watch him play two nights next weekend.. I'll be a kid in a candy store :)

    • @timhilton7254
      @timhilton7254 2 года назад +1

      @@meters_and_madness As usual, I know half of the story. I knew it was cool that Neil was a admirer but the whole story is about a thousand times cooler.
      I am not a musician, just a lover of the drums. Could I possibly get anything out of that book?

    • @meters_and_madness
      @meters_and_madness 2 года назад

      @@timhilton7254 As an admirer, but non-player of the drums, I couldn't say how much you would get out of the books. They are deep dives into advanced exercises in metric modulations, displacements, overrides, odd subdivisions, etc..
      I would recommend more his DVD's (Rhythmic Horizons and Rhythmic Visions) where he demonstrates concepts from the books, but also has tons of improv and showcasing the ideas in a musical context.
      There is also a Book / DVD combo called "Rhythmic Designs" that you might appreciate. It is a breakdown and explanation of every song from his albums with 05ric, which contains some of the most creative, interesting, and musical drum parts I have ever heard.

    I don't think you've covered Nicholas Barker on the channel, but I haven't double-checked. He's a legendary Metal drummer. He has drummed for Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Brujeria, and others. His most impressive work in my opinion is his drumming on the 2001 and 2003 albums from Dimmu Borgir, but there aren't many good drum cam videos of him (to my knowledge). His speed, precision and fills are incredible. Songs I suggest are "Indoctrination" by Dimmu Borgir", and "For the World to Dictate Our Death" by Dimmu Borgir.

    Since you are also a fan of Gavin Harrison: There's a new video of the Porcupine Tree song "Harridan" on RUclips. It's taken from the new live DVD. Take a look at it. 😊

    Hi Andrew, I love listening to Gavin too and I'll add something to your description of his playing, he has swing. Proper, old fashioned swing, it doesn't matter what he's playing there's always swing in there. Ginger Baker would have approved.

    This album was my go-to during the "angsty emo high school phase" One of those times where you don't realize the intellect/maturity of Gavin's playing (or Wilson's songwriting) until quite a few years later.

    Mark the coffee guy must be from my neck of the woods since Community Coffee is roasted & packaged right up the road from me, here in Louisiana. If so, then...Bonjour, neighbor!
    Community Coffee is definitely the best, and I bring a bag with me every time I travel anywhere that it is not available.

      This is the best I have ever heard from a drummer. The band itself was in rarified air with this song. Timing was incrediable. Execution was just totally brutal. The video was awesome as well, capturing the audience reactions. The ending with the special effects train steam sound was perfect.

    "Is it overplaying or under-executing?" Andrew, that is honestly a profound and thought-provoking question. I'm going to keep it in mind for my own playing. But I don't think it pertains to Gavin Harrison; he seems capable of executing at such a high level that even his mistakes would be musical.
